<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">
</span><span style="font-size: x-large;">That means there are only three weeks until Christmas, and we are all in full Christmas preparation around our homes.</span><br />
<br />

</span><span style="font-size: x-large;">This is the time of year when things start to get really busy, with
parties and lots of Christmas activities happening. Hopefully all your
Christmas preparations you've done already as part of the challenges
will help you feel more prepared.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">
</span><span style="font-size: x-large;">Obviously we're still focusing on Christmas preparations this week as
well, and although the tasks I have for you this week can take some
time, they should all be lots of fun too.</span><br />

boarded a ship and departed from Plymouth Harbor, England and embarked
on a 3,000-mile journey across the Atlantic to what was being called,
The New World or New England.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">Two months later, after enduring violent storms and other hardships, the ship, <em>Mayflower</em>,
put in at what we now know as Cape Cod, Mass. Four days later, on Nov.
15, a small group of men rowed ashore on a small boat, where they saw a
group of "savages" who ran away.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">The explorers tried to follow
the natives but soon foundered in the thickets and gave up. Exploring
the next day they found an abandoned settlement containing evidence of
planting, the remains of a shelter and a large kettle with sand heaped
around it.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">While digging out the kettle
they found several baskets of stored food, some of which they took for
themselves to carry back to the ship, while reburying the rest. The next
day the group found a good place to put ashore and the entire
complement of the ship, about 100 people, began Plymouth Colony.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">Starting a new colony at the
beginning of winter proved a daunting task, and about half of all the
settlers died. If not for food pilfered from the Indians that winter,
all might have perished.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">The following spring a couple
of Indians (one who had learned English from fishermen and another who
had been taken into slavery but escaped) befriended the pilgrims and
taught them how to plant and fish and gather fruit. Their first harvest
that fall was plentiful for the colonists and they and the Indians
shared their food during a three-day festival — a time that is known as
the first Thanksgiving.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">It turns out the celebration
was premature. The group structure was designed so that everyone placed
the fruits of their labor into a common store. People were then to take
what they needed for sustenance. But during the following summers, with
some toiling diligently at farming and fishing and gathering, and others
refusing to work, hard feelings developed and food shortages occurred.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">So Governor William Bradford
assigned each family a plot of ground and allowed the people to use the
fruits of their labor to eat or trade as they saw fit. It wasn't long
before so much was being produced that they could use it to trade with
others.</span><span style="font-size: large;"> The free market had won out over socialism.</span><span style="font-size: large;">
</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Today we live in a country
where "Democratic Socialism" is on the rise, and its proponents — make
no mistake, they are full-fledged socialists — believe that both the
economy and society should be run "democratically," which to them means
meeting public needs, not to make profits for a few.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">Meanwhile, those profits are
already being taken away and shared by all through our
tax-and-entitlement system that is already socialistic and not free
market at all.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><ul><li><span style="font-size: large;">The top 1 percent of
income earners take in 21 percent of the country's wealth but pay 38.5
percent of the taxes. The top 5 percent of earners take in 36.5 percent
of the wealth but pay 59 percent of the taxes.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">The top 10 percent of
income earners take in 47.7 percent of the wealth but pay 70 percent of
the taxes. And 86.1 percent of all taxes are paid by the top 25 percent
of income earners.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Meanwhile, the bottom 50 percent of income earners take in 11.3 percent of the wealth but pay only 3.1 percent of the taxes.</span></li></ul><p><span style="font-size: large;">More and more the tax
system is slanted to create a growing dependent class that pays little
or no taxes while the producers are burdened with a growing tax
liability. That will only increase if Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are
foisted on United States citizens.</span><span style="font-size: large;"> It's a system that is doomed to failure today just as it was in the 1600s.</span><span style="font-size: large;">
</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">But today is a day for Thanksgiving, and you should still have much to be thankful for.</span><span style="font-size: large;"> Those of us who practice a
religion have our loving God. We have our health issues, but if we look
about us we can always find someone dealing with a situation that would
for us be a terrible burden. Blessings on them, on you, and on us all.</span><span style="font-size: large;">
</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Finally, we Americans live in
the greatest country in the history of the world, even if it is saddled
with a few warts. For example, speaking of wealth and well-being, only
75 percent of those who want a job have one according to shadowstats.com
(the government says "officially" about 93 percent are working).</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">But, despite all that, for a few days at least, Congress is not in session plotting to steal our wealth and liberty.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><p><span style="font-size: large;">So let's relax today and
consider our blessings. Eat a hearty meal — or two. Enjoy your family,
your football game, and the weather. Recharge your batteries.</span></p><span style="font-size: large;">
And get ready to take up the fight again anew, because tyranny is but a step away.<br /><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">In the early 1900's, my Grandma raised four boys and sharecropped on a
cotton farm on Crooked Branch owned by the Dave Maples family. The farm
is north of the Elk River Bridge off of Hwy 127. There is a large Indian
cemetery on the farm and the story is a light was seen many nights
going back and forth to the cemetery. It remains on the land in a wooded
area and many arrowheads were found on the land. When I was growing up
people would come and dig for arrowheads. </span><br />

walk north from downtown Elkmont along the trail, you will find a tree lined path and see a white house sitting on a hill slightly to
the right. This is Compton Hill but at one time it was called Hyde House Hill and stories of the supernatural
swirl around it. Stories of buried treasure and ghosts. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtTrPLn0DoMRQtijlzyU4GgZfIUgeRp8oJ_6S8XQ0f4Q5qosT940gT8f3mc9dXHzXmiY-D9cMuTYMYzq0q-7YprICh3NidjZLIjWzSweI5vqZF2_72zjq5OIZNF1vVsuSdIEmKo_hkExE/s1600/-1+%25281%2529.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtTrPLn0DoMRQtijlzyU4GgZfIUgeRp8oJ_6S8XQ0f4Q5qosT940gT8f3mc9dXHzXmiY-D9cMuTYMYzq0q-7YprICh3NidjZLIjWzSweI5vqZF2_72zjq5OIZNF1vVsuSdIEmKo_hkExE/s400/-1+%25281%2529.jpg" width="324" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">However, </span><span style="font-size: x-large;">stories of golden orbs of light that appear and disappear
are also common. These lights have been said to chase people who don't
belong from the area. One sighting was in the 1930s. A man was
walking home along the railroad tracks from Elkmont. As he approached
the Hyde House hill, he saw one of these orbs floating a few feet from
the ground. As he drew closer, it still remained. When he got close,
he took his gun from his pocket and fired at it. The orb quickly shot
straight up into the evening air and disappeared. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">OLD HYDE PLACE</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Another
orb was sighted in the 1950s as two teenage girls were walking up to
the old two story house. As they rounded the corner, a golden orb
hovered in front of them. As they looked at it more closely, they
realized two faces could be seen within the ball of light. The girls
raced down the hill, leaving the hovering faces. However, on certain
nights, light can be seen in the trees. Those who get too close will
see the golden glow suddenly disappear ... Do the balls of light still
haunt Hyde Hill? </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The old house was torn down in 1980 but strange things still occur on "the hill". One of the two houses that have been built there seems to be where the unexplained still happens from time to time. Sometimes when the night is still and the Comptons are in the family room, they will hear the car port door open and then close. Footsteps come up the wood staircase. Thinking that family members or good friends have arrived, they call down a greeting but... no one answers. They go to check and... no one is there. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">There are stories of more than mysterious visitors who have come to call on the Comptons. When the boys were still at home, there are several stories told of when the fireplace crackled during cold weather. Who doesn't like to lie in front of a fire? </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The boys were no different but there were times when others enjoyed the fire as well.</span><span style="font-size: x-large;"> Several </span><span style="font-size: x-large;">nights when the boys were by the flickering flames, they would see faces in the fire who watched them for a time. As the startled boys would get up, the faces would slowly rise up into the chimney and disappear. </span><br />

residents or from published sources. Do you have one from the Elkmont
area to share? HIll Spirit has not experienced any of these but one
never knows....</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">As you walk north from downtown Elkmont along the trail, you will walk out of the tree lined path and see a white house sitting on a hill slightly to the right. Located on Compton Road, this is not the first house to be built here. There was once another and stories of the supernatural swirl around it. Many of the stories of buried treasure and ghosts in the area all center around this hill.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">What became the Hyde place was built about 1860. It was used as a hospital during the Civil War. Soldiers' blood covered hands stained the woodwork in the second story and the those hand</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">A tale is told that the money was buried at the bottom of the hilltop for safe keeping until they could return. <br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">In downtown Elkmont, a row of brick buildings has stood for many years. One building close to the trail and used to be the home of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sugarbucketmercantile/?fref=ts">Sugar Bucket Mercantile</a> was built before 1936. It has been the site of several businesses over the years and many people have passed through its door. Perhaps a few or perhaps just one, may have decided to stay.....</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Two sisters (Rhonda Buelow and Tona Underwood) who had a passion for all things rustic and primitive decided a business, the Sugar Bucket, was just what was needed. The old store front was perfect to share their collection of treasures with others. As they worked to create a place that was a little touch of home to welcome those who also loved a simpler time, a curious presence was felt. It was there when paint touched up the walls, as windows and floors were cleaned and as the furnishings and quilts added beauty and interest. It seemed content and all was well.</span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgme1IEKH6RyrCrw8KsD071iOv1qTWvkLztO7hO12vMj18LfjAHRuhKMYLmlOoQzqf3aYEAPp1Cq6U0PjstHco7F-jlLIU4pXvU-NGpwpuYMaS7cz-s-1vBqkOvJRIp3QNE-fYLQPaO6v7l/s1600/22657146_10214769034286606_1153231490_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgme1IEKH6RyrCrw8KsD071iOv1qTWvkLztO7hO12vMj18LfjAHRuhKMYLmlOoQzqf3aYEAPp1Cq6U0PjstHco7F-jlLIU4pXvU-NGpwpuYMaS7cz-s-1vBqkOvJRIp3QNE-fYLQPaO6v7l/s1600/22657146_10214769034286606_1153231490_n.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">However, tucked away behind a wall is a stairway that goes down into a cellar, one with the original stone walls and low ceilings, a place where the old water heater sat. A red, rusty circular saw blade snuggled down in the dirt floor beside it. This blade looked like it has been there for many years. As the cellar was rearranged and decluttered, the saw blade was moved around but by the next morning, it always was in its place next to the heater. After several weeks of the mysterious moving blade, Rhonda had enough of the invisible prankster, she had started to call Jasper. She put the blade in a box of trash and threw it outside in the dumpster. It was finally gone and good riddance or so she thought.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The next morning when she went down the stairs to the cellar, she turned the corner and there the red saw blade was, nestled in the dirt next to the hot water heater. She told Jasper, "I'm sorry I threw it away and since you evidently want this saw blade here than it will stay and nobody will bother it." ..... So...... if you dare the creaky, old stair down to the cellar, you will find the wandering red blade still there.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The old buildings line downtown Elkmont. The last two next to the trail used to be the site of the Sugar Bucket Mercantile. It has moved down the the road but some believe the old buildings have a ghost. Curious things happen and an invisible prankster continues to make its presence known; little things such as objects not quite being in the same spot the next morning as they were before; little things such as quiet whispers, unexplained gentle breezes and cold spots but especially when things disappear. </span><br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">One such event happened soon after the Sugar Bucket opened for business. Amanda, a dear family friend, was helping out in the store. She had been there all week. However on this day, safe in the knowledge her keys were put away, the invisible prankster was out and about. All went well through the day, but when she got ready to leave for the night, grabbing for her keys, they were gone. Everyone joined in the hunt, but alas, the keys were no where to be found. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">For the next several days, everything was moved, every box, container and sugar bucket was checked but no keys were found. Finally, in desperation, Amanda called out to what had they had started to call Jasper over those earlier weeks. "Jasper, I really need those keys. Please put them back." To everyone's amazement, the keys were laying on the second </span><span style="font-size: x-large;">counter</span><span style="font-size: x-large;"> shelf where they should have been from the beginning. How many times had they looked there? How many times had others looked? She couldn't count the number but there the keys were. </span><span style="font-size: x-large;">Could it have been the mysterious prankster, Jasper, proud of his little joke, who put them there?</span><br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">It has happened more than once that keys disappear and end up in unexplained locations. Another friend came to Sugar Bucket to visit and put his keys on the counter and when he looked around to get them, they were gone. Of course the search began; each room the friend had visited was checked but they could not be found. Finally, in the back room where he never entered, the keys were found...... found in the very bottom of a hobby lobby bag tucked in a corner. </span><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Jasper had struck again. Now, whenever this friend comes through the door, he smiles and tucks his keys securely in his pants pocket.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">....... So when you visit the Sugar Bucket, remember Jasper. Say hello; he may be listening but be sure to hang on to your keys. He may be up to some tricks instead of treats.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;">As the years passed, stories started to be told about the Old Grigsby home place. On nights when the air is still, the sounds of a horse and rider would gallop toward the house. As the ghostly pair approach the front steps, the horse leaps up the steps and gallops through the wide central hall. As they jump through the back door, there are no back stairs. Plunging to their deaths, the screams of the horse and rider sound through the night as they fall into the darkness. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The house still stands and the ghostly horse and rider hasn't bothered the people who live there now. But..... when the night is still, one never knows if those galloping hooves will once more sound in the Elkmont hills. </span><br />

Along the trail near the battle site, you never know who or what may be among the shadows. The Jordans found something they did not count on....do the ghosts of soldiers long dead still patrol the grounds? </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWuPw0zGD8IGwDRpOWZOiBtXuE0UGZbxT9JOpSY7CQvmm34qhKuzgzi5OBfc4_Oseh2vIwy3orMs4xHx0HBmGxgbcBRN__sDadhLiAXl9kveCiRTvuLyXKbmwhOl8TNAJ24eQT684CKIrB/s1600/22405533_1959583350951138_887383203346300421_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWuPw0zGD8IGwDRpOWZOiBtXuE0UGZbxT9JOpSY7CQvmm34qhKuzgzi5OBfc4_Oseh2vIwy3orMs4xHx0HBmGxgbcBRN__sDadhLiAXl9kveCiRTvuLyXKbmwhOl8TNAJ24eQT684CKIrB/s1600/22405533_1959583350951138_887383203346300421_n.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Can you see what the Jordans saw in the V of the tree? Is that a soldier in the green? Look right above the yellow leaf. What do you think? Is it a trick of the fall light or is it something from beyond this mortal plane? </span><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Take a walk down the trail if you dare.....</span></span><br />

Do you have one from the Elkmont area to share? Hill Spirit has not experienced any of these but one never knows...</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The bloodiest battle in
Alabama happened here at Elkmont, the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle.
There are stories of ghostly soldiers and horses fading in and out of the trees, mysterious cannon fire and voices
in the area of the remaining fort earthworks and surrounding hillsides. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The Alabama
Paranormal Association started a series of investigations of Civil
War sites within the state a number of years ago. </span><span style="font-size: x-large;">The Sulphur Creek Trestle battlefield was</span><span style="font-size: x-large;"> one of those on list.</span><span style="font-size: x-large;"> As the group
began investigating, they found results. In some of their recordings, there are whispering voices with one voice pleading for help on the Sulphur Creek Trestle.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUg12MDW7aed1aUiyJL6zvv2EHPNdlsj3ReBnxyfemgyh2k2NSU_urSqBoOUw8715407T__Wg86sTJP42WiIRYXzcPLt1lvufu1Lkaux9Iw-zP_WjLlDNfzJJJsqyutDwzhT4HKjCx4I/s1600/ABPP_Fort3_400x280.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="448" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLUg12MDW7aed1aUiyJL6zvv2EHPNdlsj3ReBnxyfemgyh2k2NSU_urSqBoOUw8715407T__Wg86sTJP42WiIRYXzcPLt1lvufu1Lkaux9Iw-zP_WjLlDNfzJJJsqyutDwzhT4HKjCx4I/s640/ABPP_Fort3_400x280.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Around the anniversary of the battle, strange fogs and things that aren't easily explained fuel stories from Elkmont folk about the area. Besides the tales of images of soldiers and horses moving among the trees and in the valleys, there are other stories that make you wonder.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG6nixCXF1RFMoAuiXjWpkTwjjZN6c-Db5bip2rXwCh9t3rXxYRuh1r9Mp5CzAxTq7q0y39TCyv2ZW5dI7kK7HWhcnNYabXwVwqHyjc-MlDOMFE_3hYNyhyWuNhvTebLGWfnjZzNbu8Fs/s1600/owl4.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG6nixCXF1RFMoAuiXjWpkTwjjZN6c-Db5bip2rXwCh9t3rXxYRuh1r9Mp5CzAxTq7q0y39TCyv2ZW5dI7kK7HWhcnNYabXwVwqHyjc-MlDOMFE_3hYNyhyWuNhvTebLGWfnjZzNbu8Fs/s400/owl4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">One fall afternoon, one of the sweet older couples that walk the trail stopped to read the marker at the fort site. As they looked up at the remaining earth walls, they saw a flash of light and felt a surge of electricity that raised the hair on the back of their necks. No storms were in the area that might have explained the event.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">One of our local walkers was enjoying the trail in the early evening hours. When he drew near the battlefield, he heard a whisper but not a soul could be found. A feeling that he was being watched swept over him. The</span><span style="font-size: x-large;"><span class="example"> uncomfortable and eerie stillness in the woods </span>triggered his good sense and he decided leaving was a wonderful idea. As he turned he felt a hard tug on his pant's leg. He then felt a sharp pain as if shot. Looking down, he saw nothing as he checked his leg. Needless to say a leisurely walk became a fast run.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The best stories often come from our young </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ_9O_7dkNn7ra9GI9-kO7bTFOTk-M2ttliclgI68NiIOk9RQVm6M84Y4t4c3z8txkHqXQX-ieqLKdaP6n89ZzSoZHIgTWMDF8maqVFlC5QvGL74UBd1FqGcRFgOoY1zuX6Al4ApqRaIM/s1600/ghost.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ_9O_7dkNn7ra9GI9-kO7bTFOTk-M2ttliclgI68NiIOk9RQVm6M84Y4t4c3z8txkHqXQX-ieqLKdaP6n89ZzSoZHIgTWMDF8maqVFlC5QvGL74UBd1FqGcRFgOoY1zuX6Al4ApqRaIM/s400/ghost.jpg" width="235" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">people. Often they will tell you of a strange green fog, or a sharp drop in temperature. One of our young ladies says that she and some friends were walking along the trail in the dusk of the evening when they heard whispers, muffled voices coming from the trees. It sounded like someone was giving an order to shoot. They then experienced a similar electrical surge as our earlier couple. At that moment, a soldier dressed in an union uniform stepped out of the shadows and disappeared. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">If you dare, take a walk down the Elkmont trail as twilight falls and perhaps you will experience something unexpected.... something that may or may not be there at all.</span><br />
