HWY 127 REPAVING PROJECT

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ADOT) is spending your tax money ($941,897.12) on a paving project in the Elkmont area.  Highway 127 is being resurfaced and striped from Maples Circle to just north of Wire Way (industrial park).   Reed Contracting Services is working on the road from 7 am to about 4:30 pm during the week.  This is a two lane highway so a pilot car will be used to guide traffic through, alternating between north and southbound lanes.  The project is estimated to take 35 working days to complete.  The ADOT has planned for it to be finished before October 1, weather permitting.

Yes, this is going to be a headache for school traffic between 7:30 - 8 am and 2:45-3:30 pm. Try to find another route during these times or give yourself 15 extra minutes.  Stanley Hill, our district commissioner, and District 1 are not involved in this project since HWY 127 is a state road.  The contractor was able to start a week early so it should reduce the length of time that school traffic will be affected by the resurfacing.

FRIDAY NIGHT INFO

Ardmore comes to town tomorrow night to square off against our Red Devils This is a much anticipated game each year.  This annual county rival game is hard hitting and hotly contested.  Kick off: 7 pm

Fearless Prediction

Elkmont 27, Ardmore 19

Preview: While the coaches are mostly the same, the players will be different in this annual county rivalry. No two teams lost more graduating seniors from a year ago than these two and both will find out a lot about themselves after Friday’s opener. Elkmont scored seven touchdowns and only had to throw the ball once a year ago while Ardmore matched them score for score most of the game. Look for fewer points this time.

WHAT ABOUT ELKMONT'S NEW FIRE STATION?

Since the ground breaking ceremony earlier this year, work has continued on the new Elkmont Fire Department.

Dirt has been moved and gravel has been trucked in.

Concrete Poured

The trucks rolled in with boxes and beams
The metal building was here, bright and early at 7 am.

The new station will be in front of the community storm shelter on Sandlin Road.  The  station will be 7200 square feet, have 3 bay doors facing the south and 2 facing the north on the back side.  The main lobby entrance, offices, bathrooms, meeting room and kitchen will be on the right or east of the bay doors with a southern exposure.

None of this construction blocks access to the storm shelter located behind the new fire department.  There is plenty of parking behind the dirt pile.  The building should be completed before the fall severe weather season (normally between November and mid December).

SENATOR SHELBY AND CURRENT ISSUES

Hill Spirit recently received this letter and wanted to share with interested Elkmont folk.  Our Senator, Richard Shelby has these views about current immigration discussions and Planned Parenthood funding.  Hill Spirit greatly appreciates his willingness to respond to the people he represents.

WANTING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CANNING?

Hill Spirit has noticed lots of posts about canning on facebook.  We have many people here in Elkmont that take advantage of this way to put up their garden produce for the winter.  If you are interested in learning how to can or want to improve your knowledge to a more advanced level, there will be a class offered, August 20.  It
will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Athens on 1716 West Market Street at 6:30 pm.

This class will show you the different ways of canning, water bath and pressure canning.  You will be able to ask those food storage questions you have wondered about.  How to can BBQ, Asian spicy sweet sauce, jams, meats, soaps, potatoes, pickles and everything in-between. There will be samples to taste.  Almost everything you could possibly want to know and see about canning will be available.  This class is open to everyone and the best part it is free.

HEAVEN HAS GAINED ANOTHER ANGEL

Many prayers have been said for Raegan Preslyn Morrell — an infant who battled a heart defect — as well as her family. Today, those prayers continue for her family, including her mother Jessica, father Brian and sister Riley.  Raegan, who was born Oct. 22, 2014, died Sunday, Aug. 16, at Children’s of Alabama hospital in Birmingham. Arrangements for Raegan Preslyn Morrell will be announced by Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.

The Facebook page, created in Raegan’s honor as she battled the heart defect and underwent a heart transplant, is now filled with messages of support for the Morrell family as they face the days ahead.
“Thank you for all the love and support you have shown this miracle baby,” her mother, Jessica, wrote on the page Sunday. “Over the last few months she was given a chance to live. A chance she would have never had without prayer, Children’s of Alabama, a supportive family and the love from each of you. Tonight, Rae is no longer in pain. She has touched so many and was a first on so many things. We ask for continued prayers for us and her big sister and to help us over the next few days as these will be the hardest we have ever faced.”

HAS IT REALLY BEEN 30 YEARS?

Members of the Elkmont Class of 1985 gathered together on August 1st at 306 Barbecue for their 30 Year Reunion. Classmates enjoyed reminiscing with each other over dinner. The casual atmosphere gave them all a chance to mix and mingle and get caught up with each other. Some interesting door prizes were given out as part of a game showcasing their age. A video presentation of their graduation ceremony played in the background as well as a slide show of pictures from "back in the day."

Classmates gave special attention to those they have lost. The class was able to purchase floral arrangements for each as well as donating twenty-two books to the school's library in their memory.  They have suffered six losses over the years: Steve Roberts (1967-1986), Chris Thompson (1966-1986), Vickie Baker (1967-2002), Richard Kennedy (1965-2007), Sherri Lovell Adams (1967-2011) and Joey Smith (1966-2013).
