ELKMONT GRAD BECOMES WRITER

Most of us wonder what happened to members of our graduating high school class.  Many stay within 30 miles of where they grow up but some take paths less traveled and move to other places.  Scott Burkett, Elkmont High Class of 1985, is an example of one of those adventurous classmates.  “We lived in numerous areas of North Alabama with my dad being a Methodist pastor … I have three brothers so we spent countless hours roaming fields and woods, hunting and fishing.”

After graduating high school, he joined the military and served as a medic, assigned to an infantry company with the 101st Airborne at Ft Campbell, Ky. For many years, Scott worked as an over the road driver for several trucking companies located in the southeastern United States. He has three children, Heather, Brittany and Brian and one grandson.

In 2006, Scott completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Jacksonville State University and currently resides in Las Vegas, NV where he works as an emergency room RN
.

I live in Las Vegas now, but only wound up here for work,” he said.

I can't wait to move back to Alabama.

In the meantime, Burkett is an author in his spare time.  He had always been interested in writing but didn't start out with the goal of being published.  He had a flare for poetry and short stories, writing down his thoughts and observations.

“I guess I just decided to publish some of my work to see actually if anyone would buy it,” Burkett said. “I
had allowed several friends and family members to read some of it and the general consensus was I should give it a try."  It is hard to break into the author market so he self-published,  “Solace in the Dark — A Revision of Thoughts Along Life’s Passageways." Book Link: Solace in the Dark

A friend of mine, also from Elkmont, is a ghost writer and encouraged me to give it a try,” he said, adding he was provided with the links to get started on Amazon for Kindle.

“It sold a few copies among friends and family but was limited only to people that had Kindles,” Burkett said.  “So after a few months, I pulled it from Kindle, revised it and published the version now available. I remember the first royalty check I received from Amazon,” he said. “Although it was only $89, the feeling of pride and personal satisfaction from that small amount was unmatched by any check I’ve received from working a job."

I have a western novel that I’m almost finished with,” he said. “The story centers around a young man that loses his family during the Civil War and travels west to Nevada and California to seek his fortune in the gold and silver mines.” The plan is to develop the story into a series of novels. 5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read,
I just finished reading this, and it was a great read. I highly recommend it to everyone. Poetry is great, and the short stories were well written. Can't wait to see what the author has up his sleeve for the next book. Go buy this one today.

5.0 out of 5 stars
Beautifully written poetry. Simply written, yet still thought provoking. The author did a great job of conveying his emotions in his poems. The short stories were very nicely written. Both touching deep chords and reminding the reader of the hardships of life as well as the beauty. A quick read but it will definitely make the reader think. MUST READ!!!!

ARE YOU READY FOR SEVERE WEATHER - MONDAY'S TIPS

We are all looking forward to Spring weather but there is a downside ..... Get ready by making plans before those storm sirens howl through the Elkmont area.

Thunderstorms are part of life in Alabama. Many find storms to be interesting and even thrilling, but they are dangerous creatures that deserve our respect. For a storm to be considered “severe”, it must contain at least one of the following criteria:
• Wind gusts of 58 MPH or greater
• Hail of 1 inch in diameter or greater
• A tornado

Straight line winds can cause damage and injuries during severe thunderstorms. Damaging winds occur much more frequently than tornadoes and can be just as damaging. They can exceed 100 mph. Trees and power lines can be knocked down, mobile homes can be overturned, and well-built homes and buildings damaged.

BEING PREPARED COMES TO ELKMONT SCHOOL

The world we live in is unpredictable and keeping our children safe is becoming a greater challenge.

The Limestone County School System was the first in the state of Alabama to have an armed school resource officer at every campus, and now they are breaking ground again by implementing a technology that will equip teachers to fight back against attackers.

“Not only does it allow teacher to notify authorities from any room it empowers teachers to fight back,” said Superintendent Sisk. “If somebody comes to Limestone County and tries to hurt our kids, we will defend them.”

The SafeDefend system will be fully implemented in the early part of 2016. This technology comes in the form of a safe that will be in every room in the Limestone County School System. The device aims to shorten response time, and protect student life all at the touch of a finger.

Another aspect of the system provides teachers and staff with a fingerprint-activated safe that holds gel pepper spray, tactical batons and other self-defense tools to help teachers protect students.

Terry Zills, an investigator with the Franklin County District Attorney's Office, trains Limestone County teachers on the use of tactical batons Tuesday at Elkmont High School.

Alabama Trooper Tim Beecham trains Limestone County teachers on using pepper spray Tuesday at Elkmont High School.

BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT

Laying down tonight and just can’t get the senseless killing at a Florida high school out of my mind. We have to wake up and realize that our children are being failed. Our society has become one of entitlement. The belief of “I deserve what everyone else has just because I exist.”

This is creating a problem of low self esteem in children and creating a false sense of importance. Feelings of others and the sanctity of life becomes second in their pursuit of justifying themselves and their own feelings. Giving them everything and leading them to believe that what they need and want is the most important priority in parents lives is a mistake! Our parental priority should be to create a thinking child who will become a productive adult sure in his or her own skin. Gaining this through working, improving and earning his own self worth. Schools can not raise kids! Parents have to step up! Giving them everything, fighting their battles, allowing slacking and just basically giving in to their wants is harmful! My take! Have a good one!

28 TIPS FOR MARRIAGE - THIRTEEN

"... As we look back on our thirty-six years together, some of the most beautiful times of our lives were during those early days of our marriage when we were your age. My bride was 19 and I was 22. Do not miss living through the difficult times with your companion. I believe in many ways Barbara and I became more dependent upon each other and more dependent upon the Lord in those early days of our marriage than perhaps at any other time."

28 TIPS FOR EVERY MARRIAGE - ELEVEN

"Love is a fragile thing, and some elements in life can try to break it. Much damage can be done if we are not in tender hands, caring hands. To give ourselves totally to another person, as we do in marriage, is the most trusting step we take in any human relationship. It is a real act of faith — faith all of us must be willing to exercise. If we do it right, we end up sharing everything — all our hopes, all our fears, all our dreams, all our weaknesses, and all our joys — with another person."
