Marie Wales Gates, 85 of Ardmore, Tennessee died on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at her home.

Born Sunday, December 16, 1928 in Elkmont, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Carlie Maples Wales and the late Ever Rich Wales. She was a member of Ardmore Church of Christ and a lifelong resident of this area. She loved quilting, reading, gardening, and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a husband: Sam Ed Gates, a brother: Calvin Wales, and a sister Mary Hodges.

Surviving are sons, Jim Edd (Gina) Gates of Red Bay, AL and Keith Gates and fiance Diana Crouch of Elkmont, AL, daughters, Paulette & Tommy Evans of Warrior, AL, and Patti (Joe) Stagner of Ardmore, TN, eight grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home with Douglas Eubanks officiating. Burial will be in Hasting Cemetery, Ardmore, AL.

The family will recieve friends on Saturday, February 15, 2014, from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, Ardmore, AL.

Obituary:

Larry Jack Tucker age 66 of Athens passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Tucker was born April 30, 1947 in Limestone County to Jesse Tucker and Elsie Sides Tucker.
Mr. Tucker was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. 

Graveside services will be Friday, February 14, 2014 1:00 p.m., at Wesley Chapel Cemetery with Kasey Harbin officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.

Preceded n death by his parents, Jesse and Elsie Tucker; three brothers, Junior Tucker, Horace Tucker and Ernest Tucker; three sisters, Opal Wiggington, Della Ferguson and Ida Lee Adams; two half-brothers, Arnis Fisk and Arnold Fisk.

Survived by his wife, Jane Tribble Tucker of Athens; son, Jackie Lynn Tucker and wife, Nicole of Elkmont; daughter, Lisa Rose and husband, Mitch of Athens; step-daughter, Wendy Hollander and husband, Frank of Athens; brother, James Tucker of Rogersville; 9 grandchildren 2 great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Tucker, Chad Tribble, Wesley Dempsey, Bryan Rose, John Staggs and Cody Broadway. Honorary pallbearer will be Keith Cox.

ANOTHER SLEEP LATE DAY FOR ELKMONT SCHOOL STUDENTS

Elkmont School will be delayed 2 hours today. Building will open at 9:35 am and school starts at 10 am. School will dismiss at 3 pm.

Recreational Shooting on Federal Lands – Passage - Vote Passed (268-154, 9 Not Voting) House members passed a slate of measures designed to make hunting, target shooting, and fishing easier on federally-managed lands. The Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreation Enhancement Act would exempt ammunition and fishing equipment from the Toxic Substances Control Act, increase public funds for the construction of shooting ranges on federal lands, make permanent the electronic duck stamp licensing system, and allow firearms on water projects administered by the Army Corps of Engineers. Rep. Mo Brooks voted YES California Water Resources – Passage - Vote Passed (229-191, 11 Not Voting) On Wednesday, the House passed a bill that would change the Interior Department’s water management practices around the San Joaquin Valley of California. The bill would require the department to increase the total water delivery capacity of the Central Valley Project by 800,000 acre-feet by September 30, 2018. It would also limit the enforcement and consideration of some environmental laws in completing this delivery. Rep. LIMESTONE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES REDISTRICTING MAP

ATHENS - Limestone County school officials have agreed on new voting districts to send for federal approval.

This morning, the Board of Education voted 6-0 to approve the new lines which accommodate a request from Elkmont residents that their area not be split between districts. District 2 board member Bret McGill was not present.

The board must send the map to the Department of Justice for approval. The department will look at overall population figures and any changes in minority voting populations.

LARRY PIERCE AND HIS LOVE TO HELP OTHERS

 Food, health and beauty products, cleaning supplies are things many of us buy regularly at the grocery store. And the receipt totals can add up quickly. One man in Limestone County is on a mission to get those household goods to those in need and he has a special skill to help.

“Larry Pierce started a group called The Coupon Patrol. It is a group on Facebook that helps people learn how to coupon. He also started a program called “The Family of the Month” where people suggest families that need help. I know if he gets the $319 from Pay it Forward, he will use coupons to get products to give back to the community and needy families.”
 
WHNT NEWS 19 showed up to surprise Pierce with $319 at his home in Elkmont. He is confident the cash can really be stretched.

“This will probably turn around $1,500 worth of merchandise using coupons or maybe more,” says Pierce. “We will put it to good use.”

Larry Pierce’s home stores a lot of food, cleaning products, snacks and other items that are distributed monthly to local families in need. He learns about the families via The Coupon Patrol Facebook page, which rose to more than 3,000 members in just a year. Group members make suggestions. The names are kept private. Pierce checks to make sure their need is legitimate and then he goes to work.

“On my last trip to the grocery store, I saved $220 and I only spent $20 out of pocket,” says Pierce.
Larry’s savvy shopping has already provided for many families. “So far, we’ve helped over 10 families and we’ve given away around $6,000 worth of merchandise,” explains Pierce. “We’ve been very blessed with that.”

LIMESTONE COUNTY SCHOOLS CLOSED

Elkmont School is closed Wednesday.  Hill Spirit thinks there is a good chance it will be closed until Friday.

NEWEST LIMESTONE COUNTY SCHOOL VOTING DISTRICT PROPOSAL

The map for proposed Limestone County School Voting Districts (different from student school districts) has been released.This map changes each voting district to reflect population shifts over the past ten years and to ensure equal representation.  The public will have fourteen days to review and provide feedback on this proposal.  A public hearing will be held, September 26 @ 7 am - old Athens City Hall council chambers.

This map came about when Elkmont residents became involved in the revising of the voting school districts.  After seeing the previous proposed (see below) map, they wanted territory currently assigned to proposed District 4 to be moved to proposed District 3, which was redrawn to create a separate district for Elkmont residents. The Elkmont school district had been divided in past years between Districts 4 and 5

When it came time to redraw the lines this year, Elkmont resident John Carter, serving as a spokesman for other residents, asked the board to consider creating a separate district for Elkmont. Some residents there believe it is difficult for an Elkmont resident to be elected to the board because of how the lines were drawn.  The map has been redrawn (see below).

UNA RUGBY THIS SATURDAY

The UNA Rugby team is looking for fans to cheer them on vs UAB in their conference championship this Saturday.  The UNA team is ranked 28th in the Small College Rugby Rankings.  What is Elkmont's connection?  Daniel Logan, 2012 Elkmont graduate, switched from football to rugby and starts on the team.  He is also the kicker ( who knew?).
