ELEMENTARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

One of our community's favorite teachers has been chosen Elkmont Elementary Teacher of the year.  Candi Wright Holt is a ray of sunshine wherever she goes; even Flipper thinks she is great!

LUTHER DON STARK - OBITUARY

Luther Don Stark, age 75 of Elkmont, died Sunday at his residence. Services will be 2 PM Friday at Lebanon Community Church, he will Lie-in-State from 1-2 PM at the church with Terry Lamar officiating, burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery, visitation is from 6-9 PM Thursday at Spry Funeral Home.

Mr. Stark was born March 20, 1939 in Limestone County, he was a member of Lebanon Community Church and he was a retired Farmer.

Larry Stark of Athens; Kent Stark of Abilene, TX

Sisters: 
Carol Stark Martin of Elkmont; Patricia

GET READY FOR WINTER NOW

If you are an Elkmont Alabama blog reader, you have known for at least 3 months that this winter is not going to be mild.  Of course, Hill Spirit reads Joe Bastardi at weatherbell.com.  He often is way ahead of the rest.  The federal service is still pushing a mild winter for us but another weather site, accuweather.com  has released it's forecast.

Ice storms and snow events will threaten the Tennessee Valley and parts of the southern Plains. "I'm very concerned about the Tennessee Valley to the Gulf Coast as far as extremes go this year," Pastelok said.  Areas from eastern Texas all the way up to eastern Kentucky could be under the gun for ice events this season. The region will likely see this in January, but the I-10 corridor should be on guard for a sneaky late-January or early-February storm.

The weather pattern, a weak El Nino, paired with the southern storm track and rich moisture source will set up Florida for a significant severe weather potential in mid- to late winter. Tornadoes will be possible from mid-January to February.

 
Have been reading this winter may be similar to 1976; school was out for a month when Hill Spirit was a little spook. It is time to prepare for this winter.  Hill Spirit hopes you took advantage of the LP gas pre-buy programs that were offered by the various gas companies.  However, it is now time to get your house ready for the winter. UG WHITE OPEN TODAY

Hill Spirit popped in today to see how they are doing.  The store is really coming along.  This Saturday is just a one day opening so UG White can be part of the today's festivities.  Here are a few photos of the changes that have been made since August.

HAVE YOU HEARD?

Elkmont's newest store opens today at 10 am until 5 pm.  The Hinge is located across from the railroad depot and is the cutest little place. Be sure to stop by and say hello to Heather Kiel.  She has some really cute things; getting your Christmas shopping done by December 1 is a blessing.  Try shopping local this year.

Stopped by tonight and Heather says she will be open tomorrow, you just got to see some of her things, she has some beautiful scarfs and was working on some floral arrangements, hope people will support her as she brings new things to Elkmont, when you need those gifts think HINGE. 

HAZEN CLARK HIGGS - OBITUARY

Hazen Clark Higgs age 79 of Elkmont, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Higgs was born December 13, 1934 in Genesee MI to Roy Higgs and Hazel Steele Higgs.

Services will be Sunday, October 19, 2014 2:00 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Eddison Knox officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be Antioch Cemetery.

Preceded in death by his brother, Richard Higgs; sister, Naomi Burschaud; three nephews; three nieces; step-son, Willie Patterson.

Survived by his wife, Annie Higgs of Elkmont; three daughters, Vickie Gasparich of FL, Cathy Higgs of Athens and Cheryl Holiday of Madison, AL; two set-sons, Chris Patterson and wife, Candy and Donald Patterson and wife, Andrea; 15 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Chris Patterson, Donald Patterson, Jamie Benson, and Harold Emberton.

Why?
Ebola may now be threatening a good portion of the world’s chocolate supply. Prices on cocoa futures jumped from $2,000 per ton to $2,700 per ton, hitting even $3,400 in September, when concerns surged about the spread of Ebola to Ivory Coast.

ELKMONT VOLLEYBALL RUNNER-UP IN COUNTY TOURNMENT

Playing its fourth tournament match of the day, East Limestone High finished on a high note, sweeping Elkmont 2-0 Saturday to claim the Limestone County volleyball tournament title. East Limestone won 25-18, 25-23. Elkmont beat Tanner, Ardmore and Clements to reach the finals.

The Lady Devils had four players make the all tournament team.

CHICKEN STEW BENEFIT THIS SATURDAY

There will be a benefit chicken stew for Mike Keyes on Saturday, October 18th from 11:00 - 2:00.  Location: Elkmont Fire Department

Meal includes bowl of chicken stew, crackers, drink and dessert for $5.00.   If there is any left at 2 pm, it will be sold by the gallon.  Chicken stew is prepared by Charles and Kathy Cothren of Ardmore.  Donations will be accepted to help with medical expenses for cancer treatment.

ROAD REPAVING IN ELKMONT

CHIEF DONNIE SAYS:
DON'T FORGET - STARTS TOMORROW

The repaving of Upper Ft Hampton Road starting from Highway 127 to Sandlin Road will begin October 15, tomorrow. While school is out this week, the large culvert (at the large Pond) will be replaced. Traffic will be detoured around Elkmont by using Smithfield Road and Compton Road. The project will continue into December.

Please slow down!! There is a blind curve.   It doesn't have enough room for two cars.  Please yield to other drivers and watch out for critters and kids.
