ELKMONT GROWING AGAIN

The town of Elkmont has received a $200,000 grant from the state to assist a poultry science company with an $8 million renovation of two hatchery sites in rural Limestone County. The company plans to hire 25 full-time employees and support as many as 35 new indirect jobs through the expansion.

Announced by Gov. Robert Bentley, the Community Development Block grant will aid infrastructure improvements needed for Aviagen Broiler Breeders' Elkmont growth. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) award was made possible by funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"By helping a growing business fulfill its plans, this grant will bring needed jobs and other benefits for the residents of Elkmont and Limestone County," Bentley said in a statement.

Elkmont leaders will combine the ADECA grant with $237,075 provided by Aviagen to upgrade to a public sewer service for the company, which is relying on a septic waste disposal system at this time. A new pump station and more than 4,200 feet of sewer line will also be installed by the Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority.

Katherine Louise Beach 80, of Toney,AL died Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Ardmore Care & Rehabilitation Center, Ardmore, Tennessee.  Born Friday, September 7, 1934 in Gadsden, AL, she was the daughter of the late Lester Robinson and the late Beulah Robinson. She was preceded in death by a husband: C.B. Beach, and a Brother - Lester Robinson, Jr.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, Ardmore, Alabama from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, Ardmore, AL, at 11:00 AM with Bro. Roger Bates officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery, Toney, AL.

MARY ASLEAN AMERSON - OBITUARY

Mary Aslean Amerson, Age 80 of Athens died Thursday at Limestone Health Facility.

Services will be 11AM Monday at Spry Funeral Home, Chapel, with Hubert Amerson officiating, burial will be in Myers Cemetery, visitation is from 6-9PM Sunday at Sprys.

Mrs. Amerson was born June 23, 1934 in Limestone County, she was a member of Sandlin Road Church of Christ in Elkmont and she was a retired CNA at Limestone Health Facility.

Family would like to thank the Nurses & CNA’s of 2nd North & North Wing of Limestone Health Facility for their loving care.

Survivors: Husband: George Amerson, Elkmont; Daughters: Donna Williams, Rogersville; Tina Amerson, Athens; Ten Grandchildren; Thirteen Great Grandchildren; One Great Great Grandson; Nieces and Nephews;

Preceded in death by Daughter: Rhonda Mitchell; Son: Ed Amerson.

UPDATED WINTER FORECAST

My favorite weather guy, Joe Bastardi, has his updated winter forcast out.  It is an improvement for us Elkmont folk. The old winter forecast had a big ticket winter, but the worst was farther to the Southeast than the new forecast. Regardless, take the time to prepare your home and car for the upcoming winter.  Hill Spirit plans on hibernating the first of December. No outdoor work for this little Hill Spirit once it gets cold so outdoor Christmas decorations will be up the weekend after Thanksgiving.

His forecast right now positions the central and eastern U.S. between an extreme cold winter event similar to the great winters of the 1970s (even worse than last year) and a more or less normal event.

There is no change in the idea this is a big ticket winter.  However the two big questions are (1) where will the core of the cold be? and (2) can this go to the type of extremes we saw in the late 1970s?

WHAT A STORY TELLER

We all love and appreciate Barry Pugh's stories.  Some are blessed with the gift of storytelling and Barry certainly was at the first of that line.  You just can't help but laugh if you listen just a short while.  

He put his talents on display at the Athens Storytelling Festival and was one of the biggest storytellers.  Don't say you haven't been warned when he starts to tell you some of his running stories especially ones with snakes involved.

JAMES "JIMMY LAWSON MARLOW - OBITUARY

James “Jimmy” Lawson Marlow, 68, lost his battle to cancer on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, in Lincoln. He was born Feb. 14, 1946, and was a native of Elkmont.

Mr. Marlow is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Yvonne Isbell Marlow of Lincoln; his children, James Virgil (Darla) Brasher, Jerry Shane (Sonya) Brasher, Lynda Brasher Presley, James Lance (Michelle) Marlow and Jacki Leigh (Keith Rary) Marlow; brother, Donnie (Jo Ann) Marlow; sister, Angie Marlow; grandchildren Jim (Natosha Trantham) Brasher, Josh (Crista) Miller, Marlo Brasher, Reid (Kristian Wilkerson) Brasher, Lauren Brasher, Madison and Morgan Bone, and Austin Griffith; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held “down by the river” at his home from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. The interment will be held at a later date in the Antioch Cemetery, Elkmont.

Upon his wishes to help others, he donated his body to the Anatomical Donor Program at UAB. Those wishing to make donations please donate to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.

ELKMONT VOLLEYBALL QUALIFIES FOR REGIONAL PLAYOFF

The Elkmont Lady Devils Varsity Volleyball Team beat East Lawrence to get to the Area 15 championship match vs Brooks.  Elkmont couldn't get the upset  but they did move to the next round of playoffs.  Congrads to our volleyball team and best of luck against Cordova in the regionals. The North Regional is in the South Hall of the Von Braun Center
