WILSON WARRIOR CROSS COUNTRY RUN

The Red Devil Cross Country teams took to the trails again this past Saturday, September 5 on the campus of Wilson High School in Florence, AL. It was a tough day for all of the runners as they faced extreme heat from the time they stepped up to the starting line to the time they came across the finish line.

Competing in the large school division (4A-7A), the Elkmont boy’s team finished 8th out of 15 teams and the girls team finished 7th out of 12 teams. Chase Prater (2nd) and Chance Bailey (15th) earned top 15 honors. Claudia Allen just missed top 15 with her 16th place finish and PR of 22:56. 

The finish line was an exciting vantage point for this spectator as the Red Devils showed strength in the final 160 meters of the race. After racing for 3 miles, sometimes the hardest part of the race is that .1 mile to round out the 5K distance. Most of the Red Devils finished the race sprinting, leaving nothing out on the course! 

All of the Running Red Devils did great at the meet but there are a few that I want to call out after this race – our new runners! 3 of our 7th graders, Lexxie Bailey (31:00), Jon Mikel Owens (25:14) and Jeffrey Payne (27:34), raced the varsity distance of 3.1 miles at this meet and they did great! Another new runner on the team is Luke Little, a junior that made the switch from football to cross country this year. This was his first ever cross country meet and he was the third runner for the Elkmont boy’s team with a time of 20:52!

The team will be running the 9/11 Heroes Run in Athens, AL on Saturday, September 12 and will return to interscholastic competition on Tuesday, September 15 at the Randolph Classic, better known as the Mud Run at UAH. It is a great race to come and watch – the course has them running through the creek 4 times and it can turn into a muddy mess! Come out and support these hard working athletes! They like to be cheered on just like any other athlete – it pushes them to run a little faster when they hear people cheering for them!

We were in the large school category at today's HOT race (4A-7A). Girls finished 7th...Boys 8th. Great run by all! Chase 2nd and Chance 15th each receiving a t-shirt for their top 15 finish. First time 5K race for some 7th graders and they did a stand out job! I can't tell you how hard these kids work at practice and on race day! You want to see sheer guts......go to a XC race in the heat!

GOATS IN THE DECATUR DAILY

Less than a month remains for prospective goat
farmers to cash in on a once-in-a-lifetime deal. On Oct. 1, the essay contest set to determine the new owner of Humble Heart Farms in Elkmont will stop taking submissions.

 

For $150, prospective farmers can submit a 200-word essay for the chance of winning the goat dairy and creamery, complete with a herd of 85 goats, equipment, home, 20 acres, $20,000 in operating expenses, barns and training, completely debt free.

Instead of finding a single buyer for the $350,000 establishment, the Paul and Leslie Spell organized an essay contest with the theme, “Why I, or my organization, is the perfect fit to continue the farmstead goat cheese tradition." “This is going to be the best thing that can happen to you. You’ll have life around you. You get to be a part of all of that. It’s great,” Paul Spell said.

From the submitted essays, the Spells will select the top 20 and a three-member judging panel will choose the winning essay. The winner will be announced Oct. 15.

The Spells use the goats’ milk to create flavored cheeses, dips, poppers and ice creams. On Monday, Paul Spell blended goat cheese with a farm-fresh watermelon to make a smoothie at The Market at Good Shepherd. “People are so limited in their view of goat’s cheese. They think cheese and crackers. We want to show them that it can be used to top baked potatoes, steaks, sandwiches and vegetables,” Paul Spell said.

The farm’s flavors include Rio Grande, garden herb, French, Tuscan, raspberry chipotle, some like it hot, and cinnamon and raisin.  Along with the land, equipment and herd, the essay winner will receive the recipes.

BILLY DEAN ADAMS - OBITUARY

Billy Dean Adams, 57 of Athens died Sunday in Athens Limestone Hospital. Mr. Adams was born March 11, 1958 in Limestone County and he was retired from CCS Sanitation. 

Survivors:

Daughter: Ashley Sanders, Athens
Grandson: Caleb Sanders
Sister: Tina Stark, Elkmont
Nieces and Nephews.
Pall Bearers: Steve Gatlin, Randall Taylor, Stuart Gatlin, Jason Gatlin, Andy Pylant, Jimmy Wallace.

Services will be 3PM Wednesday at Spry Funeral Home Chapel, Matt Taylor officiating, burial in Reunion Cemetery, visitation is from 1PM until service Wednesday at Spry Funeral Home.

The Vietnam Veterans of America are conducting a Candidates Forum in conjunction with the Republican Women of Limestone County. The Forum is for the Candidates for Alabama House Seat 5 formerly held by the late Dan Williams.  The five Republican Candidates (Ronnie Coffman, Danny Crawford, Mike Criscillis, Jerry Hill and Chris Seibert) have all confirmed they will attend. The lone Democrat candidate, Henry White, has declined to participate in this Forum.
 

The Forum will be held Tuesday, September 8, from 6 to 8 pm at the Vietnam Veterans building located at 17915 Elm St in Athens. Doors will open at 5:30 PM and the forum will start at 6:00. All attendees will have an opportunity to submit a question for the candidates. Dale Jackson will moderate the Forum and randomly draw questions to ask the candidates. Each Candidate will have three minutes to answer, Dale Jackson will have the option of asking a follow up question to which the Candidates will have 1 Minute to respond. Each candidate will answer different questions based on the audience’s submissions and the random draw. The Time Keeper will be Mike Davis, a Vietnam Veteran.
 

We want this to be an exciting and informative event. This Alabama House seat is crucial to Limestone County and the selection of a successor to Dan Williams is very important to the future of Limestone County. The event is open to the public at the Vietnam Veterans building located at 17915 Elm St in Athens. We hope to see you there!

VILLARD MARSHALL ROBERTSON - OBITUARY

Villard Marshall (Grandpa) Robertson, 88 of Athens died Saturday at Athens Limestone Hospital. Mr. Robertson was born November 5, 1926 in Limestone County to Fred and Irene Robertson of Lester, Alabama.  He was a retired truck driver, and a member of New Oakland Baptist Church.  

Services will be 2 PM Tuesday in the chapel of Spry Funeral Home, with Dwight Rayburn, Anthony Anderson, Cecil Norman, and Randy Robertson officiating, burial in New Oakland Cemetery.  Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 12 noon until service at the funeral home.

Survivors include, Wife, Hazel Robertson, Athens. Daughter, Cindy Stanford, Lester. Sons, Randy Robertson, Elkmont. Monte Robertson, Baileyton, AL. Rocky Robertson, Town Creek, AL. Thirteen Grandchildren, thirty six Great Grandchildren. Brother, Doug Robertson, Athens. Sisters, Alma Lane, Athens. June Whitfield, Athens. Betty Turner, Athens. Helen Brown, Athens. Ann Russell, Minor Hill, TN. and Mary Bassham, Elkmont, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Robertson was preceded in death by, Daughter, Brenda Kyle. Son, Lewis Robertson, and by two Brothers, J.C. Robertson, and Fred Robertson Jr. , and by Sister, Joan Kelley.
