ELKMONT FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS - WEST LIMESTONE

It is going to be a beautiful night for football at the Hilltop.  Boss Hill Stadium will be hosting West Limestone tonight.  These two closely linked communities with families that are split between the schools traditionally turn out for the yearly braggin' rights game.  Don't wait to the last minute to get to this game if you want to find a seat.

Calling all Red Devil Fans....WAFF will be having their tailgate party at Elkmont this Friday. Our cheerleaders need all you loud and proud Red Devils there to make some noise at the 5:00 and 6:00 newscasts. They will go live and we need you a lot of people there. ELKMONT FIREFIGHTERS PLAY IN THE WATER

If you were out and about this week in Elkmont, you may have noticed the fire department spraying water everywhere.  In the road, in a pond and in the air.  Why?  It isn't that they are out playing in the water with oversized water guns.  They are pump testing.

What is pump testing? Why it is necessary? All fire trucks are different and one of the key parts of the truck is the water pump for the hoses. Every fire truck has a different size pump on it. The two trucks at Elkmont have 1750 gpm (gallons per minute) pumps. These tests have to be done one time a year for the ISO (Insurance Service Office - government office).  This allows the fire department know if the the inside of the pump is operating correctly.  If isn't possible to take the cover off and check it. If not, it has to be repaired and brought back to pumping specifications.  This helps to keep homeowners insurance rates down also.  If the fire department doesn't do its job effectively than the insurance rates go up fast and come down very slow.  

Checking the pumps and hydrants are some of the behind the scene things that the Elkmont Fire Department does.  They also check hoses, nozzles, ladders, tools, gear and fill out that dreaded paper work for every call they do or get paged out to.  It takes a great group of women and men to keep all this in check.

ISO has not come in and done a check in Elkmont in a very long time but they have called.  Of course, they have a lot of new policies and things that have changed so that means most departments in Limestone are getting checked in the next few weeks. 

ELKMONT IN THE 9/11 HEROES RUN

The cross country team opted out of a normal meet this past weekend so that they could pay tribute to the victims of 9/11 as well as honor the law enforcement, firemen, EMTs that serve our communities today. 

The race is part of a series held all over the United States and was started by the Travis Manion Foundation.  "If Not Me, Then Who..." The Travis Manion Foundation assists our nation’s veterans & families of the fallen by empowering them to take the next step in their personal journeys.   

The spirit of the race is that: 
We RUN to honor the heroes of 9/11. We Run to HONOR those who’ve served our nation since. We Run to ACTIVATE COMMUNITIES and EMPOWER your local veterans, first responders and survivors. 

The 9/11 Heroes Run (5K) was held at the Alabama Veterans Museum in Athens, September 12.  Elkmont was well represented by not only the cross country team – decked out in their red, white and blue tie dye shirts, but their coach and several other local runners and walkers!

MEET & GREET AT RED CABOOSE

Mike Criscillis is having a Meet & Greet this Sunday (September 20th) from 2 to 4 pm at the Red Caboose in Elkmont.  It is located on 25483 Railroad Street. He is one of the Republican candidates running in the special election for District #5 (Dan Williams' office).  District 5 covers north and central Limestone County, including the cities of Athens and Elkmont.  The primary election is September 29. The other candidates are  Ronnie G. Coffman of Elkmont and Danny F. Crawford, Mike Criscillis, Jerry W. Hill and Chris Seibert, all of Athens. The Democrat is Henry White.

Mike Criscillis is retired career Army, reaching the rank of Command Master Sergeant.  He was also a curator of the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning, Georgia. 

At the recent candidate forum,

Republican candidate Mike Criscillis just had one request. “Send me to Montgomery,” he said.

The Tennessee native said his experience as the acting director of the National Infantry Museum in Georgia, which required him to manage a budget of $18.5 million dollars, has given him the tools to work with budgets on the state level.If he wins the election, he says he won’t go to Montgomery and become a “good ol’ boy.”“I won’t just be rubber-stamping bills. I will not rubber-stamp any bill that is not in the best interest of the state and of Athens and Limestone County.” (Decatur Daily)

FRANK GLEN MITCHELL - OBITUARY

Frank Glen Mitchell, 85 of Ardmore, Alabama died on Sunday, September 13, 2015, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. Born Tuesday, February 25, 1930 in Ardmore, Tennessee, he was the son of the late James Lewis Mitchell and the late Mary Miller Mitchell Smith, He was a lifelong resident of this area and a member of Ardmore Methodist Church.

He was retired from NASA where he received many awards. It was his suggestion and implementation that brought the Saturn Rocket to the Ardmore Welcome Center. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force and enjoyed cattle farming. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Robert Mitchell and Calvin Elmer Mitchell.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years: Joyce Wales Mitchell of Ardmore, AL, son: Harlan Mitchell of Ardmore, AL, daughter: Glenda (Bob) Brown of Ardmore, AL, brothers: James Marion Mitchell of Priceville, AL and Rayburn W Mitchell of Dry Fork, VA, two grandchildren: David Mitchell and Beth Reed, and five great-grandchldren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at Sylone Cemetery, Elkmont, AL, with Bro. Derrick Moose officiating.

CHRISTINE C. NAMIE - OBITUARY

Christine C. Namie, age 89, of Decatur, died Mrs. Namie was born November 13, 1925, in Limestone County to John L. Copeland and Estelle Copeland. She was a very active, lifelong member of The Annunciation of The Lord Catholic Church of Decatur. She worked at W.T. Grant as a cashier and sales clerk. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 68 years, Moses M. Namie.
Friday, September 11, 2015.

Funeral Mass will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2015, at Annunciation of The Lord Catholic Church. Father Tom Perrin S.D.S. will officiate. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. Ridout's Brown Service Funeral Home will be directing. A Rosary Service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the church. Visitation will start immediately following the Rosary Service and will last until the service time at 1:30 p.m.


Survivors include three sons, Robert Namie and Jerry Namie, both of Decatur, Don Namie, of Elkmont; one daughter, Vicki Anderson, of Springfield, TN; two brothers, Alton Copeland and Ralph Copeland; one sister, Jo Ellen Nawyn; ten grandchildren, Bobby Namie, Karen Shelton, Steve Hill, April Hitt, Jeremy Namie, Kim Wray, Stephen Namie, Stuart Namie, Casey Talbot, and Lacey Talley; 14 great- grandchildren, Peyton Namie, Turner Shelton, Abigal Shelton, Kayla Hill, Patrick Hill, Madison Springer, Jared Wray, Jonathan Wray, Allison Namie, Ian Namie, Asher Talbot, Isaac Talbot, Andrae Lunsford, and Jashon Shannon.
