IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS

All of our Elkmont Angels have been adopted for Christmas and the deadline to drop off those gifts at the school is December 10.  Our varsity boys basketball team were out shopping for the angels they are sponsoring last week.  
This week they are learning how to wrap those presents.  All of the moms reading this post will have to smile.  Wrapping gifts is evidently an art form. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL STARTS SEASON

The West Limestone annual middle school Tip Off Tournament started the season for our teams.  

LADY DEVILS
Elkmont MS girls lost to Clements, 31-23. Haven Kirby led Elkmont in scoring with 11 points followed by Brilee Miller & Gabby Rhinehiemer with 4 points a piece. Anna Grace Cook and Emily Norman contributed 2 points a piece.

RED DEVILS
Elkmont MS boys lost to Clements, 45-23. Matthew Lowery led Elkmont with 10 points followed by Brett Parker & Benji Hanback with 4 points a piece. Preston Robinson chipped in 3 points and Mason Morris contributed 2.

YOUTH BASKETBALL SIGNUPS ARE SET

Basketball signups are right around the corner.

Coach signups will be 9/11/2015-9/25/2015. Please call 256-325-2270 if you would like to coach.

Player signups will be 9/26/2015 and 10/3/2015 from 11-2pm and 10/1/2015 from 6-8pm in the concession stand at the ball fields.

NEWS COURIER ALL COUNTY BASKETBALL TEAM

The Athens News Courier released its 2015 All County Boys Basketball Team earlier this week.  This team was voted on by the Limestone County’s six boys basketball coaches.  Elkmont didn't have any players on the first team or second team but Jared Bailey received honorable mention. If you want a scrapbook copy, you can get one at the newspaper office in Athens until next Tuesday.

7&8 BOYS RUNNER-UP

With all the excitement of ice and snow in the last few weeks, Hill Spirit hasn't taken the opportunity to recognize our 7&8 Elkmont 1 boys team.  They had a great tournament and brought home the runner-up trophy.

Elkmont 1 won their first game of the Limestone County tournament over West Limestone 2, 21-10.  Curtis Hobbs led the way with 6 points followed by Corder Hobbs and Bryson Miller with 5 points each.  Cole Holt chipped in 4 points and Andrew Jackson 1.

They took on Tanner for their second game in the tournament and sent the Rattlers home, 28-19.  Bryson Miller paved the way with 12 points followed by Curtis Hobbs with 6.  Corder Hobbs scored 4 and Cole Holt, Andrew Jackson and Tavien Jackson chipped in 2 points each .  The Red Devils will face Owens 1 in the semi-finals at West Limestone.

Elkmont 1 beat Owens in the semi-finals Tuesday night 24-17 to advance to the championship game at West Limestone.  Leading the way was Corder Hobbs with 9 points, followed by Curtis Hobbs with 7.  Andrew Jackson pitched in 6 points while Bryson Miller added 2.

The young Red Devils came up short in the finals losing 24-13 to East Limestone.  Bryson Miller score 8 points followed by Curtis Hobbs with 5.

2015 SENIOR NIGHT AT ELKMONT

The basketball season is winding down and here at Elkmont, we have a tradition of senior night.  Senior night is when we say goodbye to our seniors who participate in the winter sports and are recognized during the last home game of the season.

ELKMONT VARSITY BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS

High school basketball season starts at Elkmont tonight.  Moving up to 4A this year, puts new teams into the Red Devils' area. These teams are East Lawrence, Brooks and long time rival, West Limestone.   Last year's boys varsity coach, Jason Wright, has left.  Judson Meadows will be turning the page on this new chapter in Red Devil basketball.  

Coach Meadows grew up in Leggtown, just up the road from Elkmont.  He attended West Limestone High School and had a great basketball career.  He continued his basketball career at Northwest Shoals Community College.  Meadows is committed to making Elkmont his coaching home.   He looks forward to being part of the local rivalries and Hilltop school spirit.  One of his goals is to be very involved with the youth basketball program and work with future Red Devils as well as the high school program.

Elkmont fans can look for an exciting brand of basketball this year when the Red Devils take the floor.  Coach Meadows wants to use a physical man to man and zone pressure to establish an aggressive defense.  A run and gun, high speed offense will  take advantage of the the defensive turnovers.  As long as the Red Devils are able to keep their turnovers down and play smart, they should be fun to watch. The high school teams start their seasons tonight as the Clements Colts visit the Hilltop.  The slate of games start at 4 pm with the JV girls game. Following games will start about 15 minutes after each game ends.

The Middle School teams are also playing at Elkmont.  Their games are in the old gym.  The girls team tipoff time is 4:30 pm and the boys game will start about 6 pm.

IT''S NOT TOO EARLY TO BE THINKING ABOUT BASKETBALL SEASON

Programs will be made available at all home games which include 10 Varsity/Junior Varsity dates, 7 Middle School dates, a Middle School Christmas Tournament, and a Varsity Christmas Tournament.

CHANGES AT ELKMONT HIGH SCHOOL

The Limestone School Board approved some personnel changes last week.  The biggest change is that the boys varsity basketball program has replaced Anthony Wright (one season at Elkmont) with Judson Meadows.  Coach Meadows will be the head varsity coach and Elkmont's newest social studies teacher.  His coaching supplement starts August 1 thru June 1, 2015.  Hill Spirit hopes that he will grow to love Elkmont and its kids and put down roots in our community.  This constant changing of coaches in the boys programs doesn't lend itself to building success.  Best of luck to the Basketball Red Devils this year.  Look for an interview with Coach Meadows next month.  Just a preview but here is what he does in his spare time.

FACULTY VS SENIORS BASKETBALL GAME

The fun never stops at Elkmont High School.  The Elkmont Senior Beta club is going to compete in the Beta National Convention in June.  The trip is expensive and so they are using fundraisers to try to offset most of the cost.  They have a golf scramble tournament this Saturday at Southern Gales @ 8 pm. 

Another fundraiser that was this week was the Elkmont School faculty vs the Elkmont Seniors in a game of hoops.   It certainly didn't disappoint, wacky and zany are certainly words to describe the event. From "dead eye" Missy Bailey making threes to "trick shot" Principal Garris calling the bank as he banged in an outside shot, it was so much much fun.  The Seniors were able to pull off the win, 47 - 42. Hill Spirit is sure stock in aspirin companies went up after the game.

Missy Holt Bailey: "I was hanging on to the jerseys for dear life to keep up. They were so sweet to let me shoot!!" Hill Spirit thinks this is called creative defense. :)

ELKMONT'S BAILEE GOOCH MAKES ALL AREA TEAM

It's that time of year again when the Decatur Daily selects its All Area Basketball Teams.  Elkmont didn't have anyone make it from the boys program but we did have a Lady Red Devil that made the honorable mention list.  Bailee Gooch had a successful individual season and the Decatur Daily took notice.

UNDEFEATED ELKMONT TEAM WINS COUNTY TOURNAMENT

The Limestone County youth basketball tournaments are wrapping up this week.  Elkmont has been in the hunt for several of the championships.  Hope to have some great posts later this week to share.

Elkmont 3  9 & 10 year old girls defeated West 2 Tuesday in the county tournament 14-11. Elkmont lost to Johnson 27-16 Friday night.  They finished 5th in the county tournament.  Blue Springs won the tournament.

Rhett Bailey 
Rhett is the son of Kevin and Missy Bailey.  He has been a member of the Varsity Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams for the past four years.  Rhett is the Senior Class President and was selected as a Class Favorite for the Senior Class.  On campus, he is a member of the Senior Beta Club, FCA, and Elkmont Ambassador Club.  He is also a member of the Limestone County Student Senate.  He was the Boys State Representative for Elkmont High School this past summer at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.  He was selected to the All-county Football team this year.  He was also selected to be the boys' Elkmont High School Spirit Award Representative, and he won the overall Spirit Award for Limestone County.  

Rhett has also been selected as the Elkmont High School representative for the Jordan-Bryant Student Athlete Achievement Award.  He won will the represent the Area and the Region at the State Banquet on April 14, 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama. Finally, Rhett was awarded the 2013 Honored Hero of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Huntsville.  Rhett is an advocate for St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis and a member of the Holland's Gin Church of Christ.  His future plans are to attend college and pursue a degree in medicine. 

 

 

Trevor Patterson 

Trevor is the son of Mike & Becky Patterson.  He has been a member of the Varsity basketball team for 4 years. He was also a member of the Varsity football team his freshman & sophomore years.  He participates in the Gifted Program at the Limestone County Career Tech Center.  He plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall.

Jensen Pugh 
 

Jensen is the daughter of Barry and Leigh Pugh. Jensen is a member of the Principal’s Advisory Board and Senior BETA Club.   Jensen has been a member of the EHS Cheerleading Squad for 5 years, and is serving as Captain this year.  Jensen is also a member of the Cross Country and Track teams, where she has lettered in both JV and Varsity.  Jensen was chosen as the 2013 Girls State Representative for Elkmont High School.  She was a Senior Homecoming Representative and our Miss Merry Christmas. She was also selected to be the girls’ Elkmont High School Spirit Award Representative.  She also served as a member of the 2012 Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Team. She is a volunteer for the Elkmont Lions Club, and she attends Westview Church of Christ.  She works at the Athens Rec Center, while being so active on campus. In the fall, Jensen plans to attend college to pursue a degree in geriatric nursing.  

Josh Ferrazas 

Josh is the son of Joe Ferrazas.  He has been a member of the Cross Country team for one year and the Track and Field team for the past four years, where he competed in the 4-by-1 relay. Josh played Varsity Football Team for four years.  He is the Senior Class Vice-President and was selected as a Class Favorite for the Senior Class. While on campus, he volunteers his time tutoring Elementary students.    Josh maintains a high average while holding down a full-time job after school.  In the fall, he plans to attend Calhoun Community College for his basics and later transfer to a university to pursue a Master’s Degree in Management, with a minor in Entrepeneurship
