Name: Joey Anthony Black Dates: Birth date: June 10, 1957 Death date: October 02, 2011 Obituary: Joey Anthony Black, age 54, of Elkmont, passed away Sunday, October 2, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Black was born June 10, 1957 in Oberlin, Ohio to Fletcher Black and Doris Furline Black. Services will be Wednesday, October 5, 2011 2:00 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with Bro. Eddie Bond and Bro. Donald Terry officiating. Mr. Black was a Deacon of Truth Baptist Church and a United States Army Veteran. Survived by his wife, Jackie Black of Elkmont; daughter, Jenny Robinson (Jeremy) of Elkmont; two grandchildren, Breanna McMunn and Hayden Robinson both of Elkmont; brother, William Black (Linda) of Grafton, Ohio; sister, Janie Black of Pennsylvania; several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Evan Venski, Donnie Stevens, Jack Hawkins, Johnny Kraus, David Holden and Jeremy Robinson.

GARY RHETT MCNATT- JACQUELINE MICHELLE KING MARRIAGE

Jacqueline Michelle King of Athens and Gary Rhett McNatt of Elkmont were married in a 6 p.m. ceremony April 20 in Orange Beach with Stanley McNatt officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Jane King and the late David King. She is the granddaughter of the late Buford Mildred Pressnell and Robert and Mable King.

The groom is the son of Jane and George Moses of Elkmont and Gary and Brenda McNatt of Hartselle. He is the grandson of Loyd and Macie McNatt and J.D. Mavis Phillips.

The bride was given in marriage by her brother Jim King and mother Jane King. Matron of honor was DeeDee McAfee. Junior bridesmaid was Eden McNatt, daughter of the groom.

Spenser Moses, brother of the groom, served as best man.

After a wedding trip to Jamaica, the couple returned home to Limestone County.

You love Facebook and your smart phone but all this tech stuff has a lot that ticks you off.  From the chain e-mails, people texting when they are supposed to be visiting with you, the nasty things people say on facebook or text that they would never say.  Often with the "constantly being in touch" lifestyle, people have trouble remembering the important things such as kindness, respect and honesty.  Even the really nice people make mistakes and accidentally do a really stupid thing in the unforgiving world of technology.  There are rules that will save you from wanting to put a paper bag on your head and never touching a computer or cell phone again.  


1.  "I get so many emails.  Do I actually have to respond to all of them right away?"


You really should answer personal notes as soon as you can so that the person who emailed or texted you won't be left wondering if you got the e-mail/text or not, or are you just ignoring them.  This is especially true in the social network world such as Facebook where they can see you posting updates after they sent you something.  They will ask, why are you posting updates and not answering them?  If you are busy or just need some time to answer, let them know that you read the note and will get back to them soon, such as "got it" or "text you later".  You also have the old school option of actually calling them.

ASHLEY LEWIS AND CHRISTOPHER DAVIS MARRIAGE

ELKMONT BAND MEMBERS HIT THE BIG TIME

BULLDOGS BITE RED DEVILS - DUST DEVIL IN THE STANDS

On Friday night at Sheffield, Elkmont missed a chance to put themselves in good position for the playoffs.  Now, most likely, the Red Devils will need to win three in a row to make the playoffs.

GAME SUMMARY:
Elkmont started the game with an onside kick that seemed to work perfectly and should have been Elkmont's ball.    Jose Hernandez's 15 yard short kick went over the heads of the front special team players and Cole Glass came up with the ball near the sideline.  The officials appeared confused, discussed the matter and awarded the ball to Sheffield.  The Bulldogs had a nice drive going, but Cole Glass intercepted a pass and Elkmont's offense took over.  The Red Devils moved the ball well in the first quarter but could not put points on the board.  The quarter ended with the score 0-0.

In the second quarter, Elkmont continued to move the ball but could not finish any of its drives down the field.  Sheffield scored a touchdown on a long run by their quarterback to make the score, 7 - 0.  Toward the end of the half, Elkmont was driving again, but a trick play pass back to the quarterback was intercepted and run back for another Bulldog touchdown with a few seconds left in the half.  The half ended with Sheffield up 14 - 0.

The Bulldog defense slowed Elkmont down in the third quarter and the Red Devils could not get an effective drive going.  Sheffield added a touchdown on a short touchdown run.  The third quarter ended 21 - 0.

In the fourth quarter, Sheffield intercepted an Elkmont pass and returned it inside the Red Devil 10 yard line.  Two plays later, they scored on a short touchdown run.  Elkmont added a late score on a three yard Hugo Hernandez run to make the final score 28-7.

OBSERVATIONS:
The Dust Devil believes that the key to the game was in the first half when Elkmont had the ball four times inside the Sheffield 40 yard line and came up with 0 points.  The Red Devils moved the ball well at times but could not finish drives or convert important third and fourth down plays.  The defense played well.  Cody Martin, Daniel Logan and Sloan Hawkins together had a bunch of stops and big plays on defense.  Special teams gave a solid performance.  Elkmont has three turnovers to one for Sheffield.  Turnovers have been a problem in each loss.

This was a bad loss, in  a game the Dust Devil thinks the Red Devils should have won.  Going forward, Elkmont must gain more yards consistently on offense and finish drives with points.  It is not too late to improve and make a playoff run but another loss in the region and most likely the last game for these Red Devils seniors will be at Fort Payne.

PREDICTION:
Elkmont will recover, play better and beat Danville 35 -7 next week.

RAILS TO TRAILS 10K RACE -ELKMONT'S DEBI CROWLEY WINS FEMALE MASTER DIVISION

The Elkmont Lions Club held the seventh annual Rails to Trails 10K Saturday.

Brandon York, 26, of Madison was the overall winner for the second straight year, with a time of 32:12, beating his time a year ago by 57 seconds. Lauren Lemieux, 21, of Huntsville, was the female winner with a time of 41:24. George DeWitt, 52, was the male master winner at 35:58, setting a state record for his age, while Debi Crowley of Elkmont was the female master winner at 51:22.

Stacey Glover, 36, of Athens, took home her first running trophy, coming in second in the 35-39 female age group at 58:08. Eric Patterson, race director for The Duck and Run, also set a personal best and took first in his age group of 35-39 with a time of 38:01. Eddy Burks, also of Athens, and one of the sponsors of the race, also came in first in his age group of 55-59 at 50:09.

ELKMONT FOOTBALL - MISSED OPPORTUNITY

SHEFFIELD — After an exhilarating victory over cross-county rival West Limestone last week, Elkmont was poised to win back-to-back games for the first time since beating Ardmore and West Morgan in the first two weeks.

Instead of earning a much-needed victory in the push for one of four playoff berths in Class 3A, Region 8, the Red Devils succumbed to Sheffield Friday night 28-7.

Sheffield (5-1, 4-0) is tied atop the region standings with Rogers, while Elkmont is battling for fourth place with Colbert County, which also has a 2-2 region mark.

Sophomore Hugo Hernandez put the Red Devils on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run as the Bulldogs managed to contain Elkmont senior quarterback Hayden Huseth.

Elkmont (3-3, 2-2) will host Danville Friday in region play.

"Danley played well as the Bulldogs (5-1, 4-0) kept pace with Rogers in Class 3A, Region 8 race. He finished with seven completions for 120 yards and ran 39 yards for the game’s first score.


 D.J. Sanders had one of the key plays for Sheffield late in the first half. The Bulldogs were nursing a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter when he stepped in front of a reverse pass by Elkmont receiver Bryant Wales and took it 55 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 halftime lead.


Elkmont’s score came on its final possession when Hugo Hernandez sealed a 12-play, 66-yard drive with a 3-yard run.
he Sheffield running attack logged 149 yards and the Bulldogs finished with 269 total yards. Jackson finished with 62 yards on nine carries and the touchdown and added four receptions for 46 yards. The Bulldog defense snared a trio of interceptions, two of which led to scores and held Elkmont to 245 total yards in the win."
