ELKMONT FOOTBALL - MISSED OPPORTUNITY


SHEFFIELD — After an exhilarating victory over cross-county rival West Limestone last week, Elkmont was poised to win back-to-back games for the first time since beating Ardmore and West Morgan in the first two weeks.
Instead of earning a much-needed victory in the push for one of four playoff berths in Class 3A, Region 8, the Red Devils succumbed to Sheffield Friday night 28-7.
Sheffield (5-1, 4-0) is tied atop the region standings with Rogers, while Elkmont is battling for fourth place with Colbert County, which also has a 2-2 region mark.
Sophomore Hugo Hernandez put the Red Devils on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run as the Bulldogs managed to contain Elkmont senior quarterback Hayden Huseth.
Elkmont (3-3, 2-2) will host Danville Friday in region play.

"Danley played well as the Bulldogs (5-1, 4-0) kept pace with Rogers in Class 3A, Region 8 race. He finished with seven completions for 120 yards and ran 39 yards for the game’s first score.


 D.J. Sanders had one of the key plays for Sheffield late in the first half. The Bulldogs were nursing a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter when he stepped in front of a reverse pass by Elkmont receiver Bryant Wales and took it 55 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 halftime lead.


Elkmont’s score came on its final possession when Hugo Hernandez sealed a 12-play, 66-yard drive with a 3-yard run.
he Sheffield running attack logged 149 yards and the Bulldogs finished with 269 total yards. Jackson finished with 62 yards on nine carries and the touchdown and added four receptions for 46 yards. The Bulldog defense snared a trio of interceptions, two of which led to scores and held Elkmont to 245 total yards in the win."
