"Elkmont took advantage of two big Colbert County mistakes to hold the Indians at bay and take a 17-0 win. The loss means Colbert County (3-5, 3-3 Class 3A, Region 8) must beat Lauderdale County next week and Elkmont (5-3, 3-3) must lost to Clements (1-7) in order for the Indians to make the playoffs.
Neither offense was productive as Elkmont got 143 yards of total offense, while Colbert County had 146 yards. Elkmont stopped Colbert County twice deep in their own territory with an interception and a fumble recovery. “We had a lot of mental mistakes and you just can’t do that against a good football team,” Colbert County coach Jackie Ferguson said. “We have a young group and they played hard,” he said.
Elkmont scored the game’s first touchdown with 17 seconds left in the first quarter. Daniel Logan ran for a two-yard score. Jose Hernandez kicked the first of two extra points. Hernandez pushed the Red Devils’ lead to 10-0 with a 35-yard field goal with 5 minutes left in the first half. Colbert County did not threaten in the first half. The Indians regrouped at halftime and improved on offense as well as defense.
In the second half, the Colbert County defense limited Elkmont to 18 yards of offense and no first downs. However, the Indians missed two scoring opportunities by turning the ball over. With 7:15 left in the third quarter, Colbert County drove to the Elkmont three-yard line. Running back Lorenzo Madden fumbled at the goal line and Cole Glass picked the ball out of the air and raced 99 yards for the Red Devils’ final score.
With about five minutes left to go in the game, Colbert County mounted another attempt and was able to drive to the Elkmont 19 before it stalled. With just over three minutes left to play, Elkmont’s Hayden Huseth picked off a pass to stop the drive and preserve the shutout for the Red Devils."
