DAVID RALPH TUCKER - OBITUARY

David Ralph Tucker, age 19 of Elkmont, AL, died Sunday, January 14, 2018 in Limestone County, Alabama. He was born June 11, 1998 in Limestone County, Alabama He was a Graduate of Elkmont High School, and employed at Steelcase, Athens, AL. 

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, January 17, 2018, 2 PM at Spry Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation and funeral were scheduled for Wednesday but have been moved to Thursday from noon until service time.

HOUND DOG HALF IS THE PLACE TO BE

The Hound Dog Half Marathon is this Saturday and everything is coming together nicely! We are excited about the turnout and the  forecast is predicting perfect weather, party sunny and low 40s for race time. We are looking forward to all the runners and spectators coming to Elkmont!

There will be a custom finishers medal as well as age group and overall awards.  All participants registered by Dec 1, 2017 are guaranteed t-shirt sized specified on registration.  There will also be a special award for our 7th place finisher in honor of Ludivine's accomplishment.  
  
Packet pickup is at the town hall located at 18890 Upper Fort Hampton Rd in Elkmont, Alabama.  It will be held on Friday, Jan 19th from 4 pm - 7 pm and on race day from 6 am - 7:45 am. Registration Link
  
Beautiful, CERTIFIED (USATF #AL15062JD) half marathon through the rolling hills of Elkmont, Alabama.  The course begins in downtown Elkmont and heads out into the country on the rolling rural roads.  About 7-8 miles into the race, runners will move off the road and onto the old L&N Railroad bed and is now known as the Richard Martin Trail and is part of the Rails to Trails Conservancy, where they will run the final 5-6 miles of the half marathon.

The inaugural race was a couple of years ago and was "interrupted" by this young lady.

Your Hound Dog Half race bib is your ticket to the pancake breakfast! (Elkmont Methodist Church Annex) Family and friends can join you for $5. They can pay at the door 🙂

Runrgirl is hosting a pancake breakfast at Elkmont's Hound Dog Half starting at 8:30am. Tickets are 5.00 a piece for community and spectators. The breakfast is free to all registered runners. The proceeds will be split between the Elkmont XC team and 9/11 Heroes Run-Athens, Alabama.

Proceeds from this race will benefit the Elkmont High School Cross Country and Track/Field programs.  100% of the proceeds from the Hound Dog Half go towards entry fees, equipment and other expenses of the team. Parents provide additional funding by purchasing uniforms, providing travel and accommodations as needed for state competitions. Coach Pugh inspires these kids. He is out there (on the trail) running/training WITH these kids. Doing the same workout he has them doing and through running, he has instilled a passion in some of these kids that no other coach or sport had been able to do. 

The race director has heard what some are saying about cost and is looking at other options during registration for next year's race (well, the Jan 2019 race) - bare bones entry (finisher medal only) or all in swag entry (finisher medal, shirt, hat, breakfast, etc). Some people run races for the cause and some run for the swag. Our goal (in addition to supporting the XC and track teams) is to bring you, the runners, a fun, challenging race with great support out on the course, quality swag and a desire to come back year after year to support our kids that love running as much as you do!

WINTER STORMS?

How to Prepare for a Winter Storm

It looks like we may get interesting winter weather next week.  We are due for an ice storm.  We haven't had one in several years so the odds may be good we will. One of the biggest risks from big winter storms is their ability to knock out your power, heat and communication services.  With a bad storm, this can sometimes last for days.

Here are a few tips for you in case we face any crazy storms this winter: 

When Is It Serious?

There are four different types of winter storm warnings that you may get via the news, radio, weather channel etc.  It is important to know the difference.  Here are the definitions from the Red Cross:

Winter Storm Outlook – Winter storm conditions are possible in the next 2 to 5 days.

Winter Weather Advisory – Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. When caution is used, these situations should not be life threatening.

Winter Storm Watch – Winter storm conditions are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours. People in a watch area should review their winter storm plans and stay informed about weather conditions.

Winter Storm Warning – Life-threatening, severe winter conditions have begun or will begin within 24 hours. People in a warning area should take precautions immediately.

What to Prepare Before….WAY Before

• Make sure you have a 3 day supply of water (3 gallons per person) and easy to prepare food.  Might want to consider stocking the cupboard or creating a 72 hour kit.
• Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio so you can stay aware of the situation if your other communication sources are cut off.  Make sure it is battery operated and that you have extra batteries.
• Make sure you have a good shovel. 
• Purchase a supply of flashlights (with batteries) and candles.
• Clean and inspect your chimney if you have one.  Make sure you have a supply of wood.
• Make sure you have an ample supply of blankets.  If you power goes out, you will need as many as you can get!
• Clear rain gutters and repair roof leaks.
• Have an alternate way of cooking.  A small “camp stove” works well for short term emergencies.  You may also consider a butane stove which is safe to use indoors (with a cracked window).  Make sure that whatever you choose that you have enough fuel.  Cook in a well ventilated garage (like with the door open) to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home.  The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning increasing during winter storms as people turn to alternate heat sources.
• Learn how to care for frostbite and hypothermia.  Make sure you click on these links and print those out in case your power goes out during a storm.
• Weather strip any drafty doors or windows.
• Purchase yard fertilizer (rock salt will kill the plants) to help you keep walkways safe.
• Make sure the car wipers work well.
• Make sure you have fire extinguishers in your home and that everyone knows how to use them.  House fires are much more common during winter storms as people turn to alternate heat sources.
• Consider purchasing a good supply of hand warmers.
• Consider purchasing a kerosene heater or small propane heater like Mr. Buddy.

DONALD "TINKER" MEADOWS - OBITUARY

 

Donald “Tinker” Meadows, age 56 of Bowling Green, KY passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Medical Center of Kentucky. Tinker was born on October 8, 1961 in Limestone County to Ronald Meadows and Billie Meadows.
He loved his family, music, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and Alabama Football. Tinker was employed with General Motors for over thirty years. He never met a stranger.

Tinker is survived by three daughters, Brittany Gilbert (Levi), Courtny Meadows, and Hanna Meadows all of Elkmont, AL; mother, Billie Meadows of Elkmont, AL; Connie Meadows of Elkmont, AL. He was preceded in death by his father.
 

Services for Mr. Meadows will be 11:00AM Thursday, January 11 2018 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Greg Balch officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 5:00-8:00PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

ALICE GERALDENE MITCHELL - OBITUARY

Alice Geraldene Mitchell, age 74 of Elkmont, died Friday at Athens Limestone Hospital. Mrs. Mitchell was born January 7, 1943 in Limestone County, she was a member of Bethel Church of Christ in Bethel, Tennessee and she was a homemaker. 

Services will be 2PM Monday, January 8, 2018 at Spry Funeral Home Chapel with Scott Pepper officiating, burial at Antioch Cemetery, visitation is from 6-9 PM Sunday at Spry Funeral Home. 

Survivors: 
Daughter: Brenda Mitchell of Elkmont, Sisters: Viola Turner of Elkmont, Irene Roberts of Pulaski, TN., Pauline Turner of Elkmont, Dorothy Lee of Elkmont and Diann Mitchell of Ardmore, AL., Five Grandchildren, Eight Great-Grandchildren.
Preceded death by Parents: Villard and Lorene Campbell, Husband: Joe R. Mitchell, Son: Eddie Mitchell, Brother: Tommy Campbell.

SHIRLEY MARY NEWTON - OBITUARY

 
Ms. Shirley Mary Newton, age 69 of Decatur, AL passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Wesley Acres Facility. Ms. Newton was born on July 8, 1948 in Elkmont, AL to Augusta "Gus" and Nancy Lewis Amerson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy Freeman and brothers, Samuel Amerson, Raymond Amerson and LeeRoy Amerson.

Ms. Newton is survived by her children, Michelle Colston, Crystal Robertson and Wayne Martin; sisters, Margaret Tucker, Augusta Webster, Nancy Louella Ray and Emma Tucker; brother, James Wesley Amerson; six grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Ms. Newton was a member of Patillo Street Church of God.

CLYDE MASON CARTER - OBITUARY

 

Mr. Clyde Mason Carter, age 67 of Athens, AL passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at his home. Mr. Carter was born on August 9, 1950 in Madison County to Carl and Laura Tarpley Carter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Laura Carter and one brother Gene Carter.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife Carol Carter of Athens, AL; two daughters, Tammie Johnson (Clint) of Athens, AL and Nicole Carter of Elkmont, AL; two sons, Stacy Carter(Becky) of Elkmont, AL and Carl Ray Carter (Monica) of Athens, AL; three sisters, Pat Ursery and Linda Clements both of Athens, AL and Faye Carlisle of Lacy Springs, AL; four brothers, Junior Carter and James Carter both of Ardmore, AL, Billy Carter of Madison, AL and Calvin Carter of Elkmont, AL; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Carter was the pastor of Grace Full Gospel Church.

Services for Mr. Carter will be 11:00 AM Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Doug Colwell and Steve Lane officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, January 5, 2018 from 6:00-9:00PM. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.

JOEL GILBERT MCNATT - OBITUARY

Joel Gilbert McNatt, age 88 of Lester, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2017 at his residence. Mr. McNatt was born April 19, 1929 in Limestone County, AL to Clarence McNatt and Leona Boyd McNatt.

Services will be Saturday, December 30, 2017 3:00 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with David Harwell and Donald Terry officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.

Mr. McNatt was a member of Hays Mill Church of Christ.

Survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary “Polly” McNatt of Lester, AL; one daughter, Patricia Boldin of Lester, AL; one son, Tim McNatt and wife, Jennifer of Minor Hill, TN; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann Chittam of Decatur, AL.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

ODIE DUGGER - OBITUARY

Odie Dugger, age 86 of Ardmore,Tennessee, died Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville, Alabama. Born Saturday, September 26, 1931 in Elkmont, AL, he was the son of Ronald Dugger and Lillie Dugger. He was preceded in death by his Father, Ronald Dugger, Mother , Lillie Dugger,Wife of 47 years Floy Mae Compton Dugger, Brothers,Jesse Dugger, David Dugger, and Shorty Dugger.

He is survived by his Daughter, Dana (Wade) Clem, Elkmont, AL, Son , Richie (Carla) Dugger, Ardmore, TN, Brother, Buddy (Linda) Dugger, Ardmore, AL, 3 Sisters, Mytle Currin, Ardmore, AL, Edith (Alvie) Hodges of Harvest,AL., Betty Taylor of Athens,AL. Grandchildren, Heather (Jordan) Lovell, Mathew Clem, Zak (Jada) Dugger, Max Dugger, Greatgrandchildren, Aidan Lovell,Rylee Lovell and a Special Family Member DeeDee (Jackie) Emerson.

Odie was a member of The Vetran's Organization of Ardmore.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 03, 2018 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
