MAGGIE L. SUTTON - OBITUARY

The funeral for Maggie L. Sutton, 93, of Athens will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bottoms Cemetery with Daniel Tucker officiating.

Visitation is from 6-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sutton passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at Limestone Health Facility.

Maggie Sutton was born March 27, 1918, in Minor Hill, Tenn., to Newton White and Lydia Bullington White. Mrs. Sutton was a member of Cartwright Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; five sisters; and a grandchild, Michelle Garner.

Survivors include a daughter, Faye Boyd and husband Preston of Athens; two sons, Barry Sutton and wife Mandy of Elkmont, and Allen Sutton and wife Teresa of Athens; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Lee Hagood, Heather Hagood, Joshua Brown, Jerry King, Billy Sutton and Bonnie Sutton.

DORA MARIE BERZETT - OBITIUARY

Dora Marie Berzett, 70, of Elkmont passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Athens-Limestone Hospital.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bottoms Cemetery with Randall Hammock and Rodney Britton officiating.

Visitation is from 5:30-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Berzett was born Jan. 31, 1941, in Limestone County to Luther E. Haggermaker and Bertha King Haggermaker. Mrs. Berzett was a member of Hays Mill Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Bertha Haggermaker; sister, Joyce Williams; four brothers, Roger, Walton, Edward and Junior Haggermaker; and stepdaughter, Barbara B. Miller.

Survivors include her husband, John A. Berzett of Elkmont; son, John Q. Berzett and wife Sonya of Athens; daughter, Jennifer Morrison and husband Bobby Jr. of Huntsville; stepdaughter, Donna Butler of Athens; stepsons, Sammy Berzett and wife Keila of Elkmont, Ricky Berzett and wife Lila of Athens; sister, Margaret Holt of Owosso, Mich.; two grandchildren; and 11 step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Sammy Berzett, Ricky Berzett, Adam Kelley, Bobby Morrison, Stanley McNatt and Rodney Britton.

TANNER RATTLERS SLIDE PAST JV RED DEVILS

GAME SUMMARY:
Elkmont received the opening kick. The opening series resulted with three and out and the Devils had to punt. The Rattlers returned the ensuing punt 75 yds for a touchdown which ended up being brought back for a holding call. Elkmont's defense held Tanner deep in their own territory and the Rattler punt was blocked by the Red Devils and recovered on Tanner's own 6 yard line.  Mike Tucker went on in to score with a 6 yard run. Sanchez's PAT was good and Elkmont led 7-0 at the end of one.

The second quarter started off strong for the Rattlers with Fletcher completing a 50 yard pass down to Elkmont's 35 yard line. Tanner would later go in to score with a 10 yard run by Fletcher. The Rattlers elected to go for two which came up a little short. 


Elkmont still held the lead, 7-6. Josh Ferrazas returned the following kickoff down to Tanner's 35 yard line. This drive would result in the ball going over on downs to Tanner. Tanner then drove the ball down to Elkmont' s 30 yard line where Fletcher would connect on a 30 yard touchdown pass. Fletcher then scored on the two point conversion extending the Rattlers' lead to 14-7 at the half.

Both offenses struggled moving the ball for most of the third quarter. Tanner was able to put a drive together near the end of the quarter and scored on a 20 yard scoring run by Fletcher. Fletcher then made the two point conversion. Tanner led 22-7 at the end of three. Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher.............

Elkmont took the ball to open the fourth quarter. Mike Tucker had runs of 10 and 20 yards to set up a 40 yard touchdown pass from Bryant Wales to Manuel Sanchez. Sanchez's PAT was good. Elkmont cut the lead to 22-14. Elkmont went for the on side kick and Derrick Lovell came up with the recovery for the Red Devils with 5:40 left to play. This drive would stall with the ball going over on downs to the Rattlers. Elkmont would later get one more shot to tie up the game. With the ball on our own 35 yd. line and 1:33 left to play, Bryant Wales went to work. Wales came out of the shotgun formation and had the snap go about 10 yards over his head. He ran back and recovered the ball and scrambled around trying to make something happen and found Hernandez open for a 50 yard strike. The Red Devils were on the march. However they came up short as the Rattlers were able to hold the Red Devils on fourth down and run out the clock. Final: Tanner 22,  Elkmont 14.


Observations:
I say this week in and week out, THERE IS ALOT OF TALENT HERE. You have to believe in yourselves and play a full game not just one quarter or one half, play the full game and give a 110% every play not just sometimes, all the time. The coaches had a good game plan coming in and I was really impressed with the quarterback duo of Wales and Bailey and the hard nosed running from Tucker. There were alot of passes dropped that were put on the money and would have been big gainers. If not for giving up a few big plays, the defense did pretty well. The offense was able to move the ball at times but not consistently. We have a good group of guys here and I am positive that we will win out. Listen to your coaches at practice and watch the older boys at practice that play your positions and you will learn from them. Keep your heads up. I believe in all of you..........  

RATTLERS SKINNED BY MIDDLE SCHOOL DEVILS - TAZ'S THOUGHTS

 GAME SUMMARY:
The Elkmont Middle Devils played their hearts out Monday night at Boss Hill stadium and earned a hard fought win for their first home game. EMS kicked off and the defense forced a fumble at midfield. The Devil offense wasted no time to go up 6-0 with 1:48 in the first. Tanner made it 6-6 with 4:58 left in the half. The Devil offense fumbled and Tanner scored again to make it 12-6 at halftime. 


The Devil offense took the opening kick in the third and drove to tie it at 12 with 5:58 in the third. The Devil D forced a punt, but the offense couldn't move the ball and was forced to punt and the third quarter ended 12-12. The Devil D held to start the fourth but our offense stalled and was forced to punt.  The punt was blocked and Tanner took advantage of it and scored to go up 20-12 with 2:43 in the fourth. The Devil offense quickly drove to score and convert the PAT to tie the game at 20 with 2 minutes left.  The Devil D forced another punt and regulation ended 20-20.

Overtime:The Devil offense punched it in and converted the PAT to go up 28-20. The Devil D then held Tanner on four downs to earn the victory. 


OBSERVATIONS:
The Devil Line ,anchored all season by Wilson at center, Garrett and Stover at guards and Riggs and Turner at tackles, fought hard against an oversized defensive line that put enormous pressure on them. But they hung together and opened holes for Pankey and Hobbs to run thru and provided enough time for Nelson to connect on passes to Moss and Hobbs. Some timely halftime adjustments gave a boost to both the offensive line and the defense. Once again the Devils seemed to be confident, focused, and were executing at a high level. That makes the Devils 3 and 1 on the season with Ardmore and Clements remaining  in the regular season. Keep working hard Devils, listen to your coaches, get better and stronger from each outing and we look forward to seeing ya'll against Ardmore.

YOU HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN YOUR EMERGENCY KIT, HAVE YOU?

Today we are going to add lots of little, but important items.


1. Whistles. One per family member. Consider developing a family whistle pattern that can be recognized when you become separated. think morse code as an example. A unique whistle pattern will help you to recognize each other and as you keep blowing you will be lead to each other.


2. Moist towelettes. You will need 15 just for washing hands after meals for 5 days so plan accordingly.


3.  Large heavy duty garbage bags. These don't weigh anything and they don't take up much room so add several, they are perfect for lots of applications.


4. Small note pad and pencil.


5. Diversions such as crossword puzzles, books, travel games, coloring books, whatever is appropriate for each individual family member.


6. Phone numbers: Include the following in your list of important numbers: Spouse, Doctor, Dentist, Optometrist, Hospital, Police Station, Fire Station, Parents, Clergy, Neighbors, Siblings, Poison Control, Insurance agent(s), Local Contact person, Out of State contact, Phone tree, Child’s school(s), Children’s friends (any place they may be playing when an emergency strikes).

DOWN - FILLED DRYING

After washing a down-filled item—such as a coat or comforter—put it in the dryer along with three or four (new) tennis balls. The balls will do a good job of fluffing up the down item. (They will also do a good job of waking up anyone who is taking a nap!)

BIG WIN FOR ELKMONT - DUST DEVIL IN THE STANDS

Friday night in Boss Hill Stadium, Elkmont bounced back from two straight losses by beating West Limestone in a very exciting game.


GAME SUMMARY
First Quarter:
Cody Martin ran the opening kickoff back to the West Limestone 48 yard line.  The first offensive play of the night set the tone of the game for Elkmont.  In a "hook and ladder" play, Hayden Huseth passed to Cole Glass who pitched the ball to Skyler Gant who sprinted pass the Wildcat defense for a 48 yard touchdown.  The PAT by Jose Hernandez was good and Elkmont lead 7-0.  Later, West Limestone scored on a short touchdown pass and tied the score.  The first quarter ended with the score, 7-7.


Second Quarter:
West Limestone made three turnovers and Elkmont took advantage with two scores.  First, a 20 yard touchdown pass from Huseth to Skyler Gant.  The second was a Skyler Gant one yard touchdown run.
The score at halftime was Elkmont 21,  West Limestone 7.


Third Quarter:
The determined Wildcats came out after the half and moved down the field in a long drive that ended with a short touchdown run.  The PAT was good.  The quarter ended with a 21-14 lead by the Red Devils.


Fourth Quarter:
The fourth quarter started with the the Red Devils scoring on a Hayden Huseth 30 yard touchdown pass  to Cole Glass.  The PAT was missed and the score stood at 27-14.  Later in the quarter, West Limestone scored on a ten yard touchdown pass after a bad call "roughing the quarterback" wiped out an Elkmont interception.  The Wildcats' PAT was blocked by Daniel Logan and the score was 27-20.  Hayden Huseth intercepted a West Limestone pass to end their last drive of the game.  Elkmont ran a few plays
out of the victory formation to run out the clock.  Final score:  Elkmont 27, West Limestone 20.


OBSERVATIONS:
This was a very important win for Elkmont and the Red Devils played very well.  The pass and pitch play that started the game with a touchdown was a brilliant call by the coaches and I believe set the tone for the game.  The offense was diversified and three big playmakers - Hayden Huseth, Skyler Gant and Cole Glass all played a major role.  The defense bent but did not break.  It appeared that the Wildcats were bigger and stronger, but Elkmont did not give up many big plays.  Sloan Hawkins and Ben Ferguson played very well on defense.  The special teams were outstanding except for a missed PAT.  Overall, this victory was not only an important win, but also very satisfying after losing in three overtimes last year at West Limestone.


PREDICTION:
Elkmont is back on track and will travel to Sheffield next Friday and win 28-27.

ELKMONT HOMECOMING DAYS

Elkmont is celebrating its Homecoming Week with a variety of activities that extend through Saturday.  However, due to scheduling conflicts with the graduation exam, some of the traditional school activities have been postponed or cancelled.  The Homecoming Parade is one of those things we will miss this year.  The Downtown Pep Rally has been moved to October 13.

This years’ event is in honor of three of our Elkmont High School athletes: Bronson Ellis, Rhett Bailey and Quentin Wise. Ellis and Bailey were both were diagnosed with cancer this past spring and since have won their fight against this disease. Wise was injured in a pre-season practice that has forced him to receive extensive therapy. The Elkmont community would like to invite you to come and celebrate with us in honor of these young men. The Hilltop Jubilee will feature music from; Section 8, Matt Prater (here is link to some of his work - Matt Prater), Trey Morgan, Alex Lane, The Hogan Family, The Elkmont Pickers and Athens Dulcimers. There will be a Kiddie Area with obstacle courses, giant slides, games and sea of balls. We will have food and craft vendors along with a silent auction. Tee-Shirts will be available for purchase. RED DEVILS' HARD WORK PAYS WITH WIN OVER RIVAL WILDCATS

ELKMONT — After suffering tough back-to-back losses, members of the Elkmont coaching staff and players made a pledge as soon as they returned from Lauderdale County a week ago to do their best to play better the rest of the season.

The Red Devils reaped the rewards of a productive week of practice Friday night, holding off county rival West Limestone for a 27-20 homecoming win.

“Last week we all agreed to do what we could do, the best we could do to get better,” Elkmont head coach Sean Holt said. “They came out this week at practice kind of slow and then yesterday we had the best practice yet. When it clicked, it really clicked. The guys came out and played really well tonight.”

The game was barely underway before the Red Devils (3-2) scored on their first play as Cole Glass caught a six-yard pass and then flicked it to Skylar Gant who took it 38 yards for the score.

Ten plays later, with 31 seconds remaining in the first quarter, West Limestone responded as Aaron McWilliams caught a 5-yard pass from Caleb McConnell in the back of the end zone to tie the game at seven. The Jake Blankenship extra point was good.

The Red Devils scored twice in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead at the half. Gant was credited with both, scoring on a 23-yard pass from Huseth and a 1-yard run.

The Wildcats closed the gap with 4:29 remaining in the third as McConnell hit Blankenship with an 8-yard pass, capping off a 12-play, 81-yard drive. Elkmont responded with a score in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter on a 29-yard pass from Huseth to Cole Glass to make it 27-14. The two-point conversion failed.

West Limestone wasn’t giving up.

After a 15-yard roughing the passer call on Elkmont, the Wildcats got the ball at the Red Devil 6-yard line and scored on the next play. Blankenship’s extra point attempt was blocked.

West Limestone looked to have a chance to tie the game with under two minutes remaining after holding Elkmont to 4-and-out, but Huseth intercepted a McConnell pass to seal the win.

Huseth finished the game 10 of 13 for 116 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 14 times for 63 yards. Gant rushed 10 times for 46 yards and two touchdowns.

Elkmont travels to Sheffield Friday, while West Limestone is at Central-Florence.

DEVIL DEFENSE HOLDS AGAINST MADISON COUNTY - TAZ THOUGHTS

The Middle School Red Devils traveled to Madison County on Sept 22 to play the Madison County Tigers.  Now that , my Devil fans, is the Devil team that is fun to watch. The recurring theme of tonight's game would be "And the Devil Defense holds". I counted no less than seven drives by Madison County that resulted in either a punt or a turnover on downs. Nice job by the Devil Defense to help lead the team to a very impressive 22-0 win over the home team Tigers. 


TAZ'S GAME SUMMARY: 
The Devil D forced a turnover on downs to open the game and turned the ball over to the Devil offense who put together a nice scoring drive, helped in part by the determined running of Pankey and the nice blocking of the offensive line. The PAT was good and we led 8-0 with 3:07 left in the first quarter.  The Elkmont defense went to work and quickly gave the ball back to the Devil offense.  They wasted no time in getting back in the end zone on a long catch and run by Hobbs, followed by another successful PAT.  We were up quickly 16-0 with 0:15 remaining in the quarter. 

The second quarter was mainly a defensive struggle 
and the score remained 16-0 going into halftime.

The Devil offense stalled on the initial drive of the second half but the Devil Defense put the stop on the Tigers when they attempted a fake punt on fourth down. Our offense stalled again and was forced to punt.  However, as they had all night long, the Devil D held firm again and the third quarter ended 16-0. 

The Devil offense converted a nice drive in the fourth quarter on a bit of razzle dazzle, with a halfback pass from Hobbs to Moss.  The PAT fell incomplete and we led 22-0 with 5:33 remaining in the game.   Then, guess what, ..... yep you guessed it, the Devil D holds yet again, forcing a turnover at the 4:44 mark. The offense put together a nice drive to virtually run out the clock to seal the win. 

OBSERVATIONS:  
The Devils seemed to be back in a rhythm tonight in all areas of the game. The coaches had them executing nicely and the effort appeared to be strong. This is truly a fun team to watch when they are confident, focused and executing at a high percentage. Hope to see more of the Middle Devils on Monday night.
