Layne Smith and the Chattanooga State Lady Tigers finished up their season yesterday in the semi-finals of the National Junior College D1 Softball Tournament. They lost to Central Florida, 6 - 2 and finished third in the nation.  Congrads to the the Lady Tigers on a great tournament.

 

One of our past Elkmont Lady Devils softball standouts, class of 2012,   played in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJAA) DI softball championship tournament.  The tournament was located in St. George, Utah and  played May 14 - 17.

Layne's thoughts:
Put on a softball uniform for the last time today. I couldn't have asked for a better team to end it with. I have met some of my lifelong friends on this team and wouldn't trade it for anything. Through blood, sweat, and tears we stuck together as a family and finished 3rd in the nation. This has been a experience of a lifetime; one I will never forget. Softball has been a part of my life for the past 15 years and its a surreal feeling having it come to a end. I couldn't have done it without the unconditional love and support form my parents.

LAYNE'S GREAT ADVENTURE - PART 3

We lost our first game this morning to Central Florida 4-2. We then dropped into the losers bracket and beat Odessa, 2-0, in 8 innings. We also beat Southern Union, 10-3.  

We play again Saturday against Central Florida at 11 am against and the winner of the game will advance to the championship against Angelina at
1:00 and if necessary game at 3:00. There are only three teams left. All games will be broadcasted.

MARY OZELE JOHNS - OBITUARY

Mary Ozelle Johns, 80, of Elkmont died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Athens Rehabilitation Center & Senior Care.

Mrs. Johns was born March 16, 1934, in Limestone County to Murphy and Mary Lee Rogers. She was a member of New Oakland Independent Baptist Church and a retired cook.

The funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Spry Funeral Home with Dwight Raburn and Anthony Anderson officiating. Visitation was at noon until service time. Interment followed the funeral in the New Oakland Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Donnie Johns and wife Vickie of Elkmont; daughter, Vickie Meadows and husband Bill of Elkmont; brothers, Jerry Rogers and Buddy Rogers, both of Elkmont; sister, Ruby Hill of Athens; grandchildren, Dusty Meadows, Coty Johns and Amanda Mims; great-grandchildren, Luke Meadows and Harper Lee Mims.

ELKMONT'S COWBOY - CODY INMAN

Cody Inman’s family always had horses, and he began riding when he was 14. That was also the time he became familiar with the art of calf roping. “Some friends from church invited me over to their place, and they let me rope on one of their horses,” said Inman, a 2012 Elkmont High graduate. “I was hooked from that day.”

Inman has traveled a long way since his parents took him to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, to compete as a calf roper in a junior rodeo. “I won because I was the only one entered in the 13-to-15 age category,” he said.  Despite the lack of competition that day, Inman rode and roped his way to amateur stardom. He earned a four-year rodeo scholarship to the University of Tennessee-Martin, where he will begin his junior year in August.  Inman was named the International Professional Rodeo Association Rookie of the Year in 2013 for team roping. “I won more than $10,000 in that association last year and more than $30,000 total,” he said.  Overall, Inman, who competes in about 70 rodeos a year, counts more than $100,000 in prize money, along with more than 26 buckles and nine saddles.

In team roping, he partners with Lane Mitchell, 20, of Bolivar, Tenn. “Lane and I met through the junior rodeos when we were eighth-graders,” Inman said. “We were Tennessee state champions in team roping when we were high school seniors. Now, we’re juniors at UT-Martin and have a house together up there.”  The university’s rodeo team is No. 3 in the nation. The school maintains a rodeo barn, arenas and stalls, and Inman keeps four of his six horses on campus, including Nelly, an 8-year-old he has had for a year.  “She’s my main horse now. She’s fast and pretty versatile, calm and runs hard,” Inman said. “You can do anything you want on her.” 

Inman travels to two or three rodeos each week. He will be in Athens on Thursday, Tuscumbia on Friday morning and Newnan, Georgia, by Friday night.  “I will also go to the Special Needs Rodeo in Athens on Friday morning,” Inman said. “I’ll be jumping around like crazy. But I want to do well at the Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo, and Lane and I will go all out. I’ll be competing at home.”
For the fourth year, Inman, 20, who has competed across the nation, will participate in calf roping and team roping at the Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo.

The Chattanooga State Lady Tigers won their second  game today vs North Central Texas 11-4.  They play Friday against Central Florida at 2:30 (3:30 our time) and then again if the Lady Tigers win at 7:00 pm (8 pm our time).

Obituary:

Michael Allen Powell, 55 of Taft, Tennessee died on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at his home. Born Sunday, July 6, 1958, in Maine, he was the son of the late Dalton Powell and the late Juanita Smith Powell. He was a member of New Fellowship Baptist Church in Elkmont, Alabama. He loved fishing and yard work. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Ray Powell , Randy Powell and Patty Powell.

Surviving are his wife: Nancy Ann Powell of Taft, TN, son, Michael Chad Powell of Fayetteville, TN, daughter, Samantha Reed of Ardmore, AL, brother, Scotty Powell of Ardmore, TN, sister, Judy Pack of Athens, AL, and grandchildren: Jazmine, Kayla, Taylor, Emily, Casidy, Austin, and Christopher.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, Ardmore, Alabama. Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Gatlin Cemetery with Bro. Wayne Kent officiating.

Layne's Great Adventure:
We traveled on Monday. Six of us flew for the first time. We flew from Nashville to Vegas then drove here to St. George. 

Tuesday, we  practiced and went to a banquet. 

Today, we won today against Darton state 10-1 in 6 innings. We play again tomorrow at 5:00 against North Central Texas

WACKY TRAILBLAZERS AND THE SPENCER BLACK 5K

Our running group called the Elkmont Trailblazers have been training since February to run in the Spencer Black 5K.  However, the Clements tornadoes pushes the race back from its scheduled date, May 10.  NEW DATE!!!!! June 28th. Please, please help us get the word out. The Spencer Black 5k has been rescheduled to June 28th. If you have already sent in your registration, you are all set. If you haven't signed up, please do. 4th Annual Spencer Black 5k Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run. Benefiting Clements High School and Blue Springs Elementary School Fitness Programs & Facilities.We need this race more than ever to help replace all the equipment lost in the storms.
