ELKMONT'S DELMORE BROTHERS

Elkmont natives Rabon and Alton Delmore, country music pioneers and stars of the Grand Ole Opry in the 1930s will be honored with a hometown festival offering a day of live bluegrass music.

The fourth annual Delmore Days Music Festival is slated for June 25 under the shade trees at Founders Hall on the campus of Athens State University.

Headliners including Jim and Inge Wood, Chris Scruggs, Tracy Latham and Dennis Crouch who will perform at 7:30 p.m.

Gates open at 9 a.m. with live music beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Entertainers scheduled to perform include The Majestics, Dave Wilburn, Barren River Trio, Dixie Bluegrass, Lacey Snider & Turkey Creek Ramblers, Borderline, David Russell and Just Down the Road.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food vendors and arts and crafts vendors selling everything from musical instruments to handmade items will be on hand.

Gate admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Children ages 5 and under are admitted free. The event is held rain or shine.

This year’s event is hosted by the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce Tourism Council. Sponsors include Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention, Athens State University, Redstone Federal Credit Union, Village Pizza of Athens, Open Range Communications, Claborn Specialties, Holiday Inn Express, and Days Inn of Athens.

Alton Delmore, who died in 1964, and Rabon Delmore, who died in 1952, influenced many country musicians to follow. They were inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. For more information on the Delmore Brothers visit the website www.delmorebrothers.net.
