PUBLIC MEETING ON SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICTS HAS BEEN CHANGED AGAIN

Every 10 years, school boards and city and county governments across the nation must redraw voting district lines to reflect shifts in population. They use the latest census data to change voting district lines to ensure equal representation in each district.

In Limestone County, the county school board, city school board and city and county governments have had to redraw lines.

Li
mestone County school board members will take a final look at their proposed new voting district map during a called meeting next Friday, Sept. 23.

This public meeting will be at 7 a.m. (Sept 23) at the City Council’s former chambers at 203 N. Marion St. in Athens.  (Hillspirit wonders if the board wants anyone to actually come and express their opinion at all since the meeting is at 7 am in the morning)

The school board also plans to meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, to discuss changes that must be made to the map.

Board members hope to finalize the voting district map and get it submitted to the U.S. Justice Department for its consideration and preclearance. Alabama and some other states must have political lines approved by the Justice Department under the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965. If approved by the Justice Department, members of the Limestone County Board of Registrars will begin plotting the changes and notifying some voters of changes in voting districts and poll locations.

Shifting voting district lines does not change where students attend schools.
