ELKMONT TRAILBLAZERS AT CHICK-FIL-A 5K RACE

April 6 - the day has been marked on our calendar for months!  It is finally the day of the "goal race" for the Elkmont Trailblazers!   8 weeks of training will be put to the test!  Can they do it?  Will they do it?  The answer to those questions is a resounding YES!!!!

The Trailblazers (102 of the 120) arrived at the Wellness Center in Athens around 7am - nervous, excited and anxious to begin.  After clicking a few picture,s the former Couch Potatoes headed to the starting line.  The runners took off down Washington Street and turned right on Bullington where they came to the first mile marker.  They continued on Bullington to Hobbs Street, where they turned right and headed towards downtown Athens.  The course went around the courthouse on the Square and the runners finished the last 1/2 mile or so back on Washington St (right past the Creme Delight!!) to the FINISH line at the Wellness Center.  It is a great course, well.....all except that hill coming into the finish line!  Can you say cruel and unusual punishment at the end of a race?  LOL

A FANTASTIC job by all the participants in the Chick-fil-a 5K - but especially by our Trailblazers!  Regardless of time, place or awards, every single one of these runners is a winner in my book!  As the back of our bright blue Elkmont Trail Blazer shirts say...."To Finish Is To Win!"  One of the organizers (Barry Pugh) of the Elkmont Couch Potato to 5K commented on Facebook:

"These people have trained through wind, rain, and even snow to become the athletes they are today! Loved every minute of training with this group!"

For Speedy Spud Feet, this C25K (Couch to 5K) was a great experience.  Loved meeting new people, encouraging others, being encouraged by others and most of all - came to LOVE running again!

I've heard some rumblings about a training group to prepare for the Elkmont Lion's Club Rails to Trails 10K......will post details as they come!

In the meantime, there are still several runners meeting on Monday evenings in the Elkmont Rural Village at 5:30.  I have heard about others meeting downtown at the trail to run.  Come on out and join us - don't wait for the next group to start!

Signing off for now,
Happy Running!

RHETT BAILEY SELECTED FOR 2013 BOYS STATE

RHETT BAILEY - ELKMONT HIGH SCHOOL 2013 BOYS STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Rhett Bailey has been selected to represent Elkmont High School as the student delegate to Boys State.  2013 Alabama Boys State will be held at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, June 9 to June 15, 2013.

About AL Boys State
Alabama Boys State is one of the highest honors granted to Alabama students. Students from across the state are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals, and motivation in school and community activities. Boys State week is a full and active week held on the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

At Boys State, student delegates will find the opportunity to build new friendships, participate in a mock government, and hear from and meet a diverse array of Alabama leaders such as Congressmen, state elected officials, business leaders, civic leaders, and others. Delegates will have the opportunity to join interest groups that focus on their individual areas of interest such as law school, fire college, law enforcement academy, aerospace academy, lobbyists, city government, county government, constitutional convention, engineer/computer academy, and environmental interest group. Delegates will also have activity time during which they can participate in recreational activities such as basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, academic bowl, etc.

The American Legion believes there is no better way to assure the survival of our republic than to train our young people in the ideals and objectives of American government. By teaching youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society, we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations. These are the distinguished, long-standing objectives of American Legion Boys States.

They are accomplished through a unique summertime program, one that emphasizes not classroom lectures or textbook learning, but participation and personal experience in a model state, complete with its governing bodies and elected officials.

Boys State was founded and its courses of instruction were designed to supplement the information taught in high school civic classes. Boys State teaches that our form of government is good but that its preservation depends on intelligent, informed, and loyal citizens in combination with an honest and impartial administration of government activities.

Young men chosen to be Boys State participants can look forward to a wonderful and challenging experience. All who attend can acquire a better understanding and regard for two of our nation’s benefits: freedom and democracy.

ELKMONT TRACK QUALIFIES FOR STATE

EHS Runners for the 2013 State Track Meet in Several Events!

The Elkmont Track and Field team headed to Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham, AL for the 3A – Section 3 Sectional meet on April 26th -27th.   It was an exciting meet with a lot of competition, lots of season and personal best marks.  Once again, the Running Red Devils did not fail to impress!  Be it athletic performance, behavior while on a trip or sportsmanship – these kids do EHS proud!  Coach Barry Pugh said it best in his Facebook post:

Watching the kids run this weekend I can't help but make some observations. I love running. Everything about this sport is a struggle to do the very best you can in every race and every practice to make yourself better. These athletes run the hills knowing it hurts, but greater will be their reward for doing it. On the track they accelerate through the curves and lengthen their strides to better their time in the race.  They give it all they have and leave nothing on the track to try and do better than the last time.  What a great metaphor this is for life.  These athletes learn self discipline and what hard work can bring each of them.  They fight the runner next to them all throughout the race, but turn and shake their hand at the end.  This stems from respect -they know the work that their competitor has put in.  A race of any kind is one of the most positive athletic events around.  I am proud to witness these instances where these kids show the greatest part of the human spirit.
