KATHY ANN BUCKNER - OBITUARY

Kathy Ann Buckner Tusinski, age 56, of Spring, Texas, received her heavenly reward, June 28, 2019, 12:55 a.m. at Northwest Houston Hospital in Houston, Texas.  Memorial services and a Celebration of life are planned for July 13, 2019, 11:00 a.m., at Cypress Fellowship, 16620 Cypress Rose Hill Road, Cypress, Texas, 77429.  Pastor Larry James officiating. Guests are invited to bring their favorite dish to the celebration, immediately following the service and share their favorite memories.  
 

     Kathy was born August 17, 1962 to James Allen and Ruby Lene (Harris) Buckner in Huntsville, Madison, Alabama. She graduated from Cy-Fair High School in 1980.  Continuing her education at Houston Community College. Having grown up in the South, living in Elkmont Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and Texas throughout her childhood. Settling in Houston and the surrounding areas in her adult life. Kathy's heart was filled with joy in 1988 when her son Ben was born, she felt so very blessed. Her dreams were filled with all new possibilities. Later, she met the love of her life, Joseph Anthony Tusinski II in 1999, they were married on March 20, 2004 and shared an additional fifteen joyous, loving, tender, indestructible years together. Together, they became Godparents to Brendan and Tyler, a role in which Kathy was dedicated to. Joseph was Kathy's number one care provider during her times of surgeries and recoveries. She would have no other.

      First and foremost Kathy loved the Lord. She was a Sunday school teacher, an intercessor and a home group leader. If you ever met Kathy,  she has most likely prayed for you. This woman knew the power of prayer. She stood in the gap, Ezekiel 22:30. She is a warrior for the Lord. To the future Mrs. Ben Buckner, (her sons future wife) whomever you might be, know Kathy has been praying for you since 1987. One of her many passions was singing and worshiping the Lord. She loved sewing, playing board games, cooking, digging in the dirt and growing flowers & herbs. She filled her home with a wide variety of art and family photographs, including the “Wall of Ben", a wall, in every home she has lived, covered in pictures of the son she adored and was so proud of.  Kathy always made extra effort to spend time with the children, your children, my children, her nieces & nephews, her younger cousins, she would get right down in the floor and play with them, just as if she was a child.  She enjoyed invisible tea in a tiny cup, hammering wooden nails and coloring too. She loved to spoil them with gifts, toys and candy, trips to the beach, water park, zoo, circus or museum. In her younger days she attended rock concerts, her favorite was Kiss, the first of which she attended with her mother when she was 16, that is one Moma never forgot! Later in life Kathy replaced her concerts of rock with the symphony and theater.  She was a facilitator, a git'er dun kinda gal. "The Buck Stops Here" should have been a plaque on her desk. She had no fear, barring the Lord. She lived and loved large and had a heart as big as Texas. Kathy impacted so many lives, the ripple which shall be felt for generations to come.    

     Kathy was well accomplished in her career and worked for a multitude of companies in many positions throughout her lifetime. Elevating her position and capabilities with each one. In the early days she worked for Texas Instruments and Compact. Among the various positions and promotions were engineering checker and editor of technical documentation. She started out at BJ Services in the I.T. industry. She entered the oil and gas industry with Shell & BP Oil as a business annalist and project manager. She dealt with process improvement and measuring how well a business was running. She would analyze and improve the process to make them better and more profitable. A manager of financial decisions once requested Kathy solely, he wanted no other, because he knew her capabilities, attention to detail, ability to achieve, thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task, was exactly what the company needed. For Kathy, it wasn't about the numbers, it was about the people and how it affected their lives. Her personal goal was not to layoff people to save money but to improve and optimize the process to save money without layoffs. Her priority was the lives of strangers. Strangers that never knew she prayed for them and had their livelihoods as her utmost concern. Kathy said "I wanted to leave people better off than when I found them".  

     She is preceded in death by her father; brothers Ricky Lynn & Charles Glynn Norman and James Henry Marlow Buckner; grandparents James Henry Preston & Florence Edith (Preston) Buckner and William Newton & Clara Alice (Solomon) Harris. WILLIAM DOUGLAS HOBBS - OBITUARY

William Douglas Hobbs, MD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2, 2019. He was born March 30, 1944. He was the son of the late John Merrion and Gladys Marion Craig.

He is survived by his spouse, Leena Hobbs; daughter, Dr. Nicole Hobbs; son-in-law, Dr. Chris Organ; granddaughter, Freya; brothers, Dr. Jack Hobbs and the late Frank Carpenter; sister-in-law, Radha, Shantie, Ranie and Satty; cousins, Jim and Lawana Hurt, Bill and Billie Bass, Ronnie and Melinda Christ, Dickey and Sue Hobbs and many more.

Dr. Hobbs served in the U.S. Air Force. He practiced as a Medical Doctor in Michigan, Montana, Alabama and Tennessee. He was a Medical Missionary in South and Central America for 8 years.

Memorial Services will be held at Elkmont United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. with Brother Thom Porter officiating. Limestone Chapel is assisting the family.

HAZEL OVALENE ROBERTSON - OBITUARY

Hazel Ovalene Robertson, age 90 of Athens,  died Saturday at the Limestone Health Facility.  Services will be 1 pm Wednesday in the chapel of Spry Funeral Home with Randy Robertson and Dwight Raburn officiating, burial in New Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-9 pm at Spry Funeral Home. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Robertson was born Januaury 31, 1928 in Lauderdale County. She was a homemaker and a member of New Oakland Baptist Church.  Mrs. Robertson was preceded in death by, Husband, Villard Robertson. Son, Lewis Robertson. Daughter, Brenda Kyle.

LINDA JEAN MITCHELL - OBITUARY

Linda Jean Mitchell, age 60 of Elkmont, AL died Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at her home. She lived in the Ardmore area for many years, and loved building her fires and being outdoors.

She was born on Sunday, January 4, 1959 in Atlanta, GA, she was the daughter of the late Wlliam Grover Jackson and Ruby Cranford Jackson.

She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Walter Ray Mitchell, Elkmont, AL; daughters, Amanda Shaddix, Arab, AL and April LaLonde, Athens, AL; brother, David Jackson, Hawkinsville, GA; one grandson, Nicholas Mitchell and four granddaughters, Kami, Katelyn, Abby and Alexis.

Thomas Earl Chambers, 67 of Elkmont, AL died Saturday, January 12, 2019 at his Residence. He was born May 5, 1950 in Limestone Co. AL to Leonard & Lucille Chambers & a retired Farmer.

WILLIAM M. LEWIS - OBITUARY

Funeral service for William M. Lewis, age 79 of Decatur, will be Monday, January 14, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home with Caleb Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Burningtree Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Lewis died January 11, 2019 at his residence. He was born February 15, 1939, in Franklin County to Amos Harve Lewis and Eva Childers Lewis. Mr. Lewis was retired from 3M after 39 years. Mr. Lewis served in the Army National Guard and was an avid Alabama fan. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Marilyn Gray.

Survivors include, one sister, Vonda Thublin of Decatur; three nieces, Kelley Anderson of Athens, Kathy Gray of Elkmont, and Vicki Blankenship of Hartselle; and one nephew, Bobby Smith of Decatur.

Pallbearers will be his family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be the Jack’s coffee group.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the American Diabetes Association.

DEBORAH "GRANNY" FAYE MELVIN

 

Deborah "Granny" Faye Melvin, age 65 of Toney, AL died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at her home in Toney, Alabama. Born Tuesday, October 27, 1953 in Louisville, KY, she was the daughter of the late Earl Emerson and Marvalene Thornton Emerson. Lived in the Ardmore area for 38 years and was a member of Carters Grove Baptist Chruch. For over 20 years she was a member of the Old TIme Christians Blue Grass Gospel Group. She loved the Bible, her extended family, and her music. Everybody that knew Granny, know she loved you all and she will be with you always.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Ida Pearl and Walter B. Emerson, Acie Huston and Mini Ruth Thornton; and mother and father-in-law, Margret and Everett Melvin.

DON ELMORE - OBITUARY

Don Elmore, age 82 of Elkmont, died Sunday, January 6, 2018 at Athens Health and Rehab. There will be a 2 pm Graveside Service Wednesday, January 9 in Pettusville Cemetery, with visitation from 12 noon until 1:30pm at Spry Funeral Home. 

Mr. Elmore was born October 10, 1936 in Limestone County, he was a member of the Baptist church and he was a retired Carpenter.

KENNETH PAUL MITCHELL - OBITUARY

Kenneth Paul Mitchell, age 74 of Athens died Tuesday January 1, 2019 at Alive Hospice in Nashville. Mr. Mitchell was born September 14, 1944 in Alabama, he was a member of New Hope Church of Christ, a retired Electronics Technician, an avid fisherman, hunter and Guitar player. 

Services will be 11 am Tuesday, January 8 in the chapel of Spry Funeral Home. Visitation was Monday from 4 - 6 pm at the funeral home, burial will be at Myers Cemetery.

JOAN ELAINE WALES HANEY - OBITUARY

Joan Elaine Wales Haney,  age 70 of Elkmont, AL, died Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville, Alabama.

Born Monday, August 30, 1948 in Athens, AL, she was the daughter of the late Linzie Wales and Joyce Wales.

Mrs. Haney loved her church family and was a very active member of her Sunday school and Bible classes at Wooley Springs Baptist Church.

RANDY LEON MCCURRY - OBITUARY

 

Mr. Randy Leon McCurry, age 59 of Elkmont, AL, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018 at his home. Mr. McCurry was born on February 20, 1959 in Limestone County to Elmer McCurry and Mable Long McCurry.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Stevie McCurry and sister, Diana Curry.

Mr. McCurry is survived by his daughter, Amanda Hutto (Rocky) of Athens, AL; son, Adam McCurry (Monica) of Anderson, AL; sister, Tina Harrison of Elkmont, AL and grandchildren, Dylan Carter, Andrea McCurry and Levi McCurry.

A memorial service for Mr. McCurry will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Union Hill Cumberland Church in Anderson, AL with Chuck Hood officiating.

BRENDA CAROL INMAN BLACK - OBITUARY

Brenda Carol Inman Black, age 69, of Athens, Alabama, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2019 at the Decatur Hospital. Brenda was born Dec. 19, 1948 in Limestone County to James W. “Red” Inman and Thetus Howard Inman. She graduated Clements High School in 1967 and later from Florence State University, “now University of North Alabama” with a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. She taught school at Reid Elementary and later Elkmont Elementary where she retired after 30 years of teaching. She was a member of Hobbs Street Church of Christ.
She loved her grandchildren and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 11 from 6-9pm. Services will be held December 12 at 2pm, at Spry Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Irby officiating and burial following in the Limestone Memorial Gardens.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Danny Black of Athens; son, Heath and wife Kellie Black of Athens, mother, Thetus Inman of Athens, sister, Jane Stanford of Athens, aunt, Irene Inman, two grandchildren, Ryland and Hudson Black, all of Athens; many nieces and nephews.

Linda Faye Mitchell,  age 70 of Ardmore, AL died Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Athens-Limestone Hospital, Athens, Alabama. She was born Saturday, October 30, 1948 in Athens, AL, and she was the daughter of the late Alex Louie Turner and Pearlie Ann Nalley Turner.

ROBERT LEE KING - OBITUARY

Robert Lee King, Jr., 70, of Ardmore, AL died Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at his residence. Born Monday, December 15, 1947 in Elkmont, AL, he was the son of Robert Lee King, Sr. and Mable Davis King. Mr. King was the owner and operator of King's Hardware for over 33 years. He served over 7 years in the Air Force and had one tour in Vietnam. He was a member of First National Bank Community Board, Trustee for Pettusville Cemetery and past president of American Legion/Ardmore Post. He also enjoyed collecting toy trains.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lonnie King, David King and Ricky King.

Allen Ray Smith, age 58 of Elkmont, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Athens-Limestone Hospital. Mr. Smith was born September 5, 1960 in Bakersfield, CA to Allen Harrison Smith and Catherine Ann McElyea Smith.

LUCILLE V. CRAIG - OBITUARY

Lucille V. Craig, age 93, of Athens died Wednesday at her residence. Mrs. Craig was born September 2, 1925 in Limestone County. She was retired from Sunbeam Bakery, and a member of Market Street Church of Christ. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the American Legion, and an avid Rook player.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Spry Funeral Home Chapel with Guy McDaniel and David Cox officiating, burial in Limestone Memorial Gardens. Visitation Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home. Josephine Defoe, age 59 of Elkmont, died November 5 at ECM Hospital. Mrs. Defoe was born June 19, 1959 in Hohenwald, Tennessee, and she was a homemaker.

Gracie Pullum, age 93 of Athens, died Sunday at her residence. Mrs. Pullum was born April 30, 1925 in Lincoln County, Tennessee, she was a member of New Oakland Baptist Church, Athens.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-9 pm at Spry Funeral Home. Services 2 pm Wednesday in the chapel of Spry Funeral Home with Dwight Raburn, Shane Reyer, Frankie Murphy, and Anthony Anderson officiating. Burial in Gatlin Cemetery. 

Pallbearers will be, Deryl Haggard, Tim Reyer, Randal Haggard, Danny Bermea, Brandon Ivey,Michael Ivey, Austin Lopez, and Nick Thompson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be, Jeremy Pope, Brennen Shores, Jacob Shores, Josh Reyer, Colby Murphy, Hunter Reyer, Byron Hodges, Nathan Reyer, and Blake Haggard. 


Survivors, Daughters, Barbara (Sonny) Hodges of Elkmont. Kathleen (J.L.) Haggard of Elkmont. Wanda (Wayne) Haggard of Athens. Marjorie Taylor of Athens. Eighteen Grandchildren, thirty eight Great Grandchildren, and twenty seven Great Great Grandchildren. Sister, Marie Winsett of Hobart, Oklahoma. Several Nieces and Nephews.
She was preceded in death by, Husband, Robert Mason Pullum. Daughter, Nadine Reyer. Grandsons, Ronnie Haggard, and Wesley Lopez.  Granddaughter, Rita Reyer.

JIMMIE CARLETTE CARNEY - OBITUARY

Jimmie Carlette Carney Ray, age 75 of Elkmont, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Ardmore Health and Rehab. Mrs. Ray was born July 16, 1943 in New Hope Alabama to Carl Robert Carney and Nellie Leona Smith Carney.

Services for Mrs. Ray are Friday, November 2, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Brad Broadway and Tammie Johnson officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shoemaker Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughters, Jimmie Ruth Henley (Billy) and Sue Ann Broadway (Brad); sons, Ricky Carney (Lynn), James Kimbrough, Robert Kimbrough, Charles Kimbrough (Misty), Chris Kimbrough, Carter Kimbrough and Jeff Kimbrough (Kristy); 47 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; brothers, Edward Wilbanks, Joe Wilbanks, Raymond Wilbanks, Bobby Wilbanks, Kenneth Wilbanks and Steven Wilbanks; sisters, Shirly Hill, Billie Fay Trumenne, Wanda Sue Sublett and Donnie Haymon.

Preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Wanda Lavern Jones.

Pallbearers will be her sons, Ricky Carney, James Kimbrough, Robert Kimbrough, Charles Kimbrough, Chris Kimbrough, Carter Kimbrough and Jeff Kimbrough. Honorary pallbearers are Guy Logan, Benjamin Broadway and Bradley Broadway.

ISAAC DAWAYNE "DUDDIE" BATRUM - OBITUARY

A life well lived isn't measured in length but in the number of people it has touched for good. Issac lived a good life.

Isaac Dawayne "Duddie" Batrum, age 17 of Elkmont Alabama, died Saturday, October 27, 2018.

Born Tuesday, March 6, 2001 in Decatur, AL, he was the son of Michal Batrum and Rosie Hope Haggard. He lived in the Ardmore area all his life, and was a member of First Community Baptist Church of Ardmore. He was on the Elkmont varsity football team as a defensive tackle and varsity baseball player as a left-handed pitcher, loved the outdoors, such as fishing, hunting, building bonfires and riding motorcycles.He had a huge heart , he loved his family, friends, people in general especially children.

He is survived by his Father, Michal Batrum, Athens, AL, Mother, Rosie Hope Haggard, Elkmont, AL, Girlfriend, Montana Worley, Harvest, AL, Brother, Miguel Cooley, Ardmore, AL, Sister, Brooklyn Glass, Athens, AL, Grandparents, Marvin & Connie Dunn, Elkmont, AL, Grandparents, Randy & Pam Davis,West Limestone, AL.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 29, 2018 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, at 2:00 PM with Bro. Steve Hargrove officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Athens, AL.

The Boger’s have graciously opened up Willow Oak Farms for everyone to gather tomorrow after the burial for Isaac. We ask that everyone join us as we reminisce on the good times. Food is welcomed to be dropped off with Anna Davis Boger there at the barn. Pass the word along, Isaac loved crowds and would love to be the center of attention.

I plan on allowing students to check out at 12 tomorrow to attend Issacs funeral. Students must bring a parent note and turn it in before school. I will not accept emails or parent phone calls to check out students.

It’s hard to put into words what I witnessed today and tonight. I saw pain in our teachers and students hearts. I also saw teachers and students comforting one another. I have been overwhelmed with the support our school has received. Thank you to our central office staff, our counselors from around the county, Chick-fil-A of Athens for giving our kids 200 biscuits this morning, and others who sent me encouraging messages. I hope no principal has to go through this because it is absolutely the worst thing I have experienced in education. However it’s also been one of the best because I have seen kids pray together, love on each other and lift each other up today like I’ve never seen before. Issac was very special for a number of reason and he will be missed by many. I hope people will remember his love for life. He lived big and sometimes he and I butted heads over it but he could always win me back with his smile. Please continue to lift up our school in your prayers in the days to come.
