ELKMONT SOCCER MAKES PLAYOFFS IN FIRST SEASON

Soccer has been gaining popularity in the United States.  This spring, it was added to Elkmont's list of high school varsity sports.  With a roster of seventeen players, the Kicking Red Devils had only two seniors and one junior for the inaugural season. Elkmont was fortunate to have a strong core of experienced players who understood the game and provided leadership to this young team.

The Red Devils had a regular season record of 3-9-1. With each game they improved and finished on a high note by defeating Mars Hill at Mars Hill, 2-1 Elkmont had 2 key wins against Ardmore, which allowed them to finish second behind West Limestone in the area.  As runner-up in the area, they were matched up against East Limestone in the first round of the playoffs.  The Red Devils played hard and well, but came up short, losing 7-0.

COACH HINTON'S THOUGHTS:
We had a successful launch of our program this year and the boys set a foundation for years to come.  They worked really hard and competed each  game.  We had a young, inexperienced team this year, but they grew up fast and improved each time they stepped on the field.  I am really proud of how they acted and represented Elkmont on and off the field this year.

RUNNING RED DEVILS GOING TO STATE!!!

The Red Devil Track and Field teams competed in the 4A Section 4 Sectional meet at James Clemens High School on April 24th and April 25th.  Although there is always new competition to contend with as athletes graduate and new ones join a program, the Red Devils faced competition at a different level this year.  They knew the schools they would be competing against when they were 3A – they even knew the other athletes and their abilities .  This all changed when Elkmont moved up to Class 4A. The Red Devils found themselves in a very tough section this year – but they did not disappoint us!

Records!  Records are made to be BROKEN!  Five new school records were set this past weekend!  The first one by freshman Chase Prater in the 3200M run.  This is 2 miles, 8 LONG laps around that oval!  He finished in 10:26.01 (and earned a Silver medal) which beat the old school record, held by Adam McMahan, by 3 seconds!  Way to go Chase!

The second new school record belongs to the 4x100 meter sprint relay team manned by Tiyler Walts, Ethan Shores, Jake Armstrong and Noah Sharp.  Their time of 48.5 beat the old record of 49.13, also set this year at the Muscle Shoals Invitational meet.

Noah Sharp is responsible for the next two school records.  Early in the season he told Coach Pugh, “I want to try the hurdles!”  Try them he did!  He ran the 110m High hurdles in 19.01 and the 300m Hurdles in 44.93.  Noah earned a bronze medal in the 300m hurdles and qualified for the state meet. Always impressive but this was only the 2nd time he had ever run this event!  This is a big deal considering Elkmont doesn’t have  a track or“equipment” to train on!  Awesome job, Noah!  We are proud of his initiative and willingness to try something new and make the best of training for such an event!

The last record set by the Red Devils at Sectionals belongs to Brianna Barnett.  She threw the discus 63’1” – beating her previous record of 62’3”.  Way to go Brianna!

Sectionals is where athletes qualify for the State Track and Field competition.  This year, Elkmont has 6 athletes going to the state meet.  Qualifiers include:

Chase Prater – 1600M, 3200M and 4x800M relay

Ethan Shores – 4x800M Relay and 4x100M relay

Tiyler Walts – 4x800M Relay and 4x100M relay

Noah Sharp – 300M Hurdles and 4x100M relay
