BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT
And all through the
Kids were going berserk,
Breaking every rule,
Teachers were getting antsy,
Keep them busy!
That’s the trick ,
What kind of craft can we do?
You know something they can’t lick!
We’ve colored Santa’s, reindeer, and elves,
We’ve colored wreaths, socks, kids playing at dawn,
We’ve talked about gifts, behavior and giving,
And right in the middle gave the Scantron! (I know right?)
Santa better come quickly,
Teachers are begging and pleading,
Our creativity is wearing out!
Our patience is all but fleeting,
Tell your kids that school’s still in session,
Their behavior should be just fine,
And parents if I could fill your stocking,
You’d find a guide with rules for car line!
The week creeps by so slowly,
And what should suddenly appear,
CHRISTMAS BREAK..finally approaching ,
And hoping for a great New year !!!
Keep us all in mind!!!
Have a good one !
Have a good one !

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE TODAY
Wind shear values will certainly be high enough to produce both damaging winds and even tornadoes. Large hail appears to be a threat as well. Hence, the NWS Birmingham and the Storm Prediction Center have a severe weather threat for all of Central and North Alabama for Monday night.
And this last table illustrates the meaning of storm color maps in a funny but still true way for many of us.
If you need a place to go..

SEVERE WEATHER CANCELATION
Due to the threat of severe weather, all after school activities are canceled for Monday, December 16th.
WHEN IS THE ELKMONT STORM SHELTER OPEN?
When watches and warning are posted and if you are in the city limits of Elkmont, you don't have as much to worry about. The lay of the land changes as you get closer to Elkton Road and I-65. The chances of damaging winds and tornadoes go up in that area whenever we have severe weather in the area.
Now, the important part, how do you get in? The Elkmont Fire Department is the keeper of the keys. Here is the procedure for when and how the shelter will be used.
OPENING OF THE SHELTER IN BAD WEATHER
*We will establish communications with EMA upon activation.
*We will keep occupants updated with current weather information
*Occupants shall adhere to Safe Room Rules which will be posted in Safe Room
*If the Safe Room is in the vicinity or path of a tornado the doors will be locked ( should residents attempt to enter the Safe Room they will be allowed in and the doors locked back.)
*If the Safe Room is in the vicinity or path of a tornado the doors will be locked ( should residents attempt to enter the Safe Room they will be allowed in and the doors locked back.)
*The Safe Room will be opened by someone in the Elkmont Volunteer Fire Department. This person will be there until the threat of bad weather is gone or is released by another member of the Fire Dept.
As you can see, it has bathrooms and a few chairs but this is a very bare bones, no bells and whistles shelter. If you are looking for comfort, bring what you need. Please remember that space is at a premium so check before you bring something in. If it is crowded, leave what you can in the car. One of our ever ready fire fighters can give you guidance if you need help deciding. The shelter is open when a tornado watch or warning is issued.
Location:
19667 Sandlin Rd, behind the new fire station

*Right: Fire Department
*Rear: Storm Shelter

HILLSPIRT WANTS YOU TO KNOW THIS ABOUT YOUR CAR
Nearly 100 percent of cars on the market include wireless technologies that could pose vulnerabilities to hacking or privacy intrusions such as a key fob that lets you unlock or lock your car with out a key. These are so convenient but there is a catch. There are several devices that will allow thieves to get into your car without breaking in. There are frequency jammers, key programmers, code grabbers and several other devices that puts your car at risk.
Since the carmakers are dragging their feet on the security issue, for now the solution is surprisingly low-tech but effective, say security experts. Store your key fob in the freezer or microwave (remember to remove it before heating up food!). The appliance acts as a Faraday cage that shields the key fob from radio frequency signals. Or wrap your keys in aluminum foil or put them in a metal box. Same principle as the freezer or microwave.
Another simple thing is to make physically sure that your doors locked when you push that button. You need to listen for audible clues your car gives to confirm that it’s locked. Don’t take it for granted. You can bypass the remote locking system and use a real old-fashioned key. Try the handles to make sure. The frequency jammers can't open the doors but they can keep them from locking.
