MADISON HOGAN - ELKMONT MISS MERRY CHRISTMAS

The senior Miss Merry Christmas representatives from each local school in Limestone County recently lead their communities in the Annual Reliance Bank Christmas Parade. The students will also be introduced at the December Chamber of Commerce Coffee on Dec. 21 at Founders Hall Parlor at Athens State University.

Miss Merry Christmas representatives were: Mary Beth Russell of West Limestone High School, Mackenzie Hicks of Ardmore High School, Misty Johnson of Faith Christian Academy, Aubrey Hagewood of Athens Bible School, 

Madison Hogan of Elkmont High School, 

Victoria Sims of Athens High School, Jessi Roberts of Limestone County Technical Center, Anna Black of East Limestone High School, Summer Kirk of Clements High School and Shakira Lovett of Tanner High School.

Also, each year one Limestone County elementary school and one Athens City elementary school choose two students each to represent their schools as junior parade marshals, to be honored guests and help lead the Annual Reliance Bank Christmas Parade. One requirement is that the student is an established member of the community. This year, students represented Athens Elementary School and Elkmont High School. Junior marshals for Athens Elementary School are fourth-grade student Brooke Berzett, daughter of Kelly Berzett and Bruce Berzett, and third-grade student Wyatt Maclin, son of Courtney and Mark Maclin.



Junior marshals from Elkmont High School are fifth-grade student Emma McNatt, daughter of Freddie and Charis McNatt and fifth-grade student Hunter Pitman, daughter of Jay and Marnie Pitman.

ELKMONT CHRISTMAS PARADE

We would like to THANK every one who entered the Elkmont Lions Club Christmas parade today, It was a big success and the Good Lord blessed us with beautiful weather. Thanks to all who came out to watch hope you enjoyed it. See you

ELKMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL SPLITS WITH TANNER

Tanner traveled to the Hill, Dec. 3 for a middle school game with the Lady Devils, followed by a match up with the Red Devils.  The Elkmont girls pulled off a great win over the Lady Rattlers 42 - 33.  The Red Devils weren't able to pull off the bookend win over Tanner and lost 57 - 36.  The Middle School teams are doing well this season but Tanner always has tough teams to beat.  A win over Tanner is something to smile about.   The Elkmont Red Devils and Lady Devils will be traveling to Minor Hill, Dec. 6.  Games start at 6 pm.

WHAT YOU DIDN'T LEARN IN SCHOOL

Came across this in my reading today and wanted to share.....



Bill Gates recently gave a Commencement speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both. 

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. 

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity. 

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes; learn from them.  

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. 

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one. 

ELKMONT BEATS ARDMORE 2

Rebounding from last weekend's overtime loss to Clements, Elkmont's 9/10 basketball team defeated Ardmore 2 by a final score of 20-11 on December 1. Jo Jo Brown was the leading scorer for Elkmont.

HOW TO DECORATE AN ELKMONT CHRISTMAS TREE

Elkmont Cub Scout Pack 248, with the help of friends and family, decorated the Christmas tree in downtown Elkmont last Saturday. Led by Ronald Christ, the Cub Scouts decorate a Christmas tree at City Hall each year.

Gracie was born March 21, 2007 in Jefferson County to Michael Randy Smith and Andrea Deeann Wrinkle Smith. Services will be Wednesday, December 5, 2012 2:00 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 4, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with Rev. Donald Terry officiating. Survived by her parents, Randy and Dee Dee Smith of Athens; twin sister, Gabrielle (Gabie) Smith and Cheyenne Smith both of Athens; grandparents, Brad and Judy Cook of Decatur, Ken and Teri Smith of Milan, TN and Pamela Jines of Jackson, TN; four uncles, Brad Cook, Jr. of Elkmont, Jack Cook of Lafayette, LA, Michael Cook of Somerville, AL and Jack Wrinkle of Gun Barrel, TX; aunt, Debbie Shrewsbury of Beckley, W.V.; god parents and numerous family and friends.  Gracie was loved by many and her life touched an entire community. She laughed loud, fought courageously and loved hard. Our lives were profoundly blessed by this Angel baby. Pallbearers will be Travis Gentry, Brad Cook, Jr., Mike Cook and Kevin Cook. Honorary pallbearer will be Rick McKay.

LINDA HAWKINS - OBITUARY

The funeral for Linda Hawkins, 69, of Athens will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McConnell Funeral Home with Roland Lee and Brent Hawkins officiating.

Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ms. Hawkins died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at home.

Linda Hawkins was born Feb. 24, 1943, in Madison County to Glen Yarbrough and Nova E. Locke Yarbrough. Ms. Hawkins was a homemaker and worked at Huntsville Hospital. She loved spending time with her family and gardening. She was a member of First Union Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister-in-law, Joan Yarbrough.

Survivors include one son, Brent Hawkins and wife Kara of Elkmont; one daughter, Kelly Lewis and husband Ronnie of Athens; three brothers, Jerry Yarbrough of Harvest, Jackie Yarbrough and wife Janice, and Jeff Yarbrough and wife Diane, all of Athens; three grandchildren, David Lewis of Athens, Sloan Hawkins of Elkmont, Bodie Hawkins and wife Beth of Elkmont; two great-grandchildren, Cade Hawkins and Liddy Hawkins; one uncle, Milford Locke of Athens; former spouse and father of her children, Johnny Hawkins; one niece; and four nephews.

Pallbearers will be Sloan Hawkins, David Lewis, Bodie Hawkins, Peanut Abercrombie, Will Yarbrough and Dewayne Uselton.
