STACY ANN MATHIS - OBITUARY

Stacy Ann Mathis age 43 of Elkmont, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014 at her residence. Ms. Mathis was born October 15, 1970 in Ohio to John Franklin and Sandra Custard Franklin.

Memorial services for Ms. Mathis are Monday, October 13, 2014 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home at 6:00 p.m. with Donald Terry officiating. Visitation will be Monday, October 13, 2014 from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

She is survived by her daughter, Jessica Sloan and husband D.J.; son, Joshua Miller; mother, Sandra Franklin; brother, John Franklin Jr.; sister-in-law, Katie Abernathy; niece, Hannah Camp; several aunts and uncles.

Preceded in death by her father, John Franklin; grandson, Jayden Hartman; grandmother, Bobbie Brown.

SHIRLEY FAYE PALMER - OBITUARY

Shirley Faye Palmer, 78 of Elkmont, died Thursday, October 9 at her residence. Services will be 11AM Saturday, October 11 at Spry Funeral Home, Chapel with Steve Dorning, Colton Palmer officiating, with burial in Roselawn Cemetery, visitation is from 6-9 PM Friday at Spry Funeral Home.

Mrs. Palmer was born February 29, 1936 in Limestone County, she was a member of the Baptist Church, she was a retired Attendance Clerk for Athens City Schools and she was a devoted Mother, Grandmother and Aunt.

Survivors: Son: Ken Palmer and wife Judy, Elkmont; Grandchildren: Colton Palmer, Elkmont; Kennedy Palmer, Elkmont; Nephew: Hal Barley, Athens; Great Niece: Shelby Barley; Great Nephews: Britt Barley, Brock Barley.

Preceded in death by Husband: Elwood Ray Palmer; Parents: Breace & Jip Barley; Brother: Harold Barley.

TILDA MAE BROWN - OBITUARY

Mrs. Tilda Mae Brown, 85 of Athens, died Wednesday, October 8 at Athens Limestone Hospital. Services will be 2 PM Friday, October 10 at Spry Funeral Home, Chapel with Dennis Ivy officiating, burial in Gatlin Cemetery. 

Visitation was from 11AM until service at Spry Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown was born June 1, 1929 in Cullman, AL, she was a member of Tanner Pentecostal Church and she was a homemaker. Survived by Daughters: Joyce Pike and husband Jimmy of Athens; Doris Cluxton and husband David of Athens; Martha Turner and husband Larry of Athens; Faye Hutto of Athens; Sons: Wesley Brown and wife Brenda of Athens; Jerry Brown and wife Nina of Athens; Larry Brown and wife Florene of Athens; Johnny Brown of Athens; Donald Brown of Athens; Son-in-Law: Ike Martin of Elkmont; Sisters: Frances Dyer of Tennessee; Norlee McCune of Athens; Cora Lee Cox of Athens; 25 Grandchildren; 57 Great Grandchildren; 17 Great Grandchildren;

Preceded in death by husband: James M. Brown; Daughter: Linda Martin; Grandson: Anthony Brown, Scottie Brown, Michael Brown; Great Granddaughter: Taylor Lane Hathcoat.

ELKMONT GOES 5 -1

Great win for the Elkmont Red Devils.  Next week against Desler will be a big regional game.  The Florence Times and Decatur Daily both have articles for you scrapbookers.

CENTRAL HEIGHTS — Elkmont took advantage of six Central turnovers en route to a 31-7 victory over the Wildcats on Friday night. Elkmont improved to 3-1 in Class 4A, Region 8 play with a win over Central-Florence.  Central (3-3, 2-2) threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball in the red zone on its first possession.

Elkmont took an early 7-0 lead a 4-yard run by Mike Tucker. The score was set up by the first of the four interceptions.

Central’s lone score came in the second quarter on a 43-yard quarterback run by Patric Langston to tie the score at 7. That, however, would be the only highlight for Central. Elkmont then seized control, reeling off 24 unanswered points to secure the win.

Elkmont (5-1, 3-1) finished with 365 total yards. Quarterback Jordan Nelson made the most of his four completions, throwing for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Nelson hit receivers Eli Hobbs and Jared Bailey for touchdowns of 59 and 51 yards as the Red Devils took a 21-7 lead into halftime.

Elkmont held Central to 242 total yards. The Red Devils were able to consistently put pressure on Langston, leading to the four interceptions.  Elkmont coach Sean Holt gave most of the credit for the win to the defensive line. “Our defensive line did a great job,” said Holt. “Drew Thompson, John John Williams, Kody Clark and Brent Stovall did a great job.”

Elkmont kicker Alexis Hernandez hit a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter to push the lead to 24-7.  The Red Devils scored again in the fourth quarter after picking off another Central pass. A 20-yard run by Bailey extended Elkmont’s lead to 31-7.

Bailey finished with a game-high 109 yards on 13 carries for Elkmont (5-1), while Nelson completed 4 of 6 pass attempts for 137 yards.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS AT CENTRAL

Big regional game for the Elkmont Red Devils.  A win tonight would almost cement them into the playoffs.  It will be nippy tonight so bring so heavy coats, gloves and blankets.  Best of luck to our boys in Red.

BRRR....A cold front will pass through the area by the early afternoon.  Any rain should be ending after the front passes.  Winds will switch from the south to the west immediately behind the front.  Those winds could be somewhat breezy.  Sustained speeds should be between 10-20 mph, but a gust to 25 or 30 mph is possible.  The wind will eventually switch to the northwest, driving noticeably cooler air into the Valley. Fourth-year head coach Sean Holt appears to have things turned around at Elkmont after winning just five games the past two seasons ... GEORGE EDWARD CLEM - OBITUARY

Mr. George Edward Clem, age 84 of Elkmont, died Thursday at his residence. Service will be 2PM Saturday at Spry Funeral Home, Chapel, with Bobby Marks officiating, burial in Roselawn Cemetery, visitation is from 6-9PM Friday at Spry’s.

Mr. Clem was born August 20, 1930 in Elkmont to Eddie Clem and Eva Phillips Clem, he was a member of Zehner Road Methodist Church, Athens, a United States Navy Combat Veteran of the Korean War, served aboard the UIvert M Moore Destroyer Escort ship, and retired from The Athens Police Department after serving 30 years.

Preceded in death by wife: Mary Ann Taylor Clem, parents: Eddie and Eva Phillips Clem, Step-Mother: Birdie Jones Clem.

DORIS WOOD DARMER - OBITUARY

Doris Wood Darmer age 74 of Athens, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at her residence. Mrs. Darmer was born April 19, 1940 in Brilliant, AL to George Wood and Emma Pridmore Wood.

Services will be Friday, October 3, 2014 2:00 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Norman Webb, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Limestone Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Darmer was a member of the Church of Christ.

Preceded in death by her husband, John C. Darmer, Jr.; parents, George and Emma Wood; several brothers and a sister.

Survived by two sons, Ricky Darmer of Athens and Randy Darmer of Elkmont; two daughters, Deborah Holladay of Athens and Jeani Johnson of Chelsey, AL; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Billy Wood and wife, Catherine ; two sisters, Melba and Betty; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Holladay, William Putman, Andrew Darmer, Byron Lyn Johnson, Eric Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Sammy Griffin and John Braswell.

ELKMONT 6TH GRADERS ARE READY

September has been designated as the Emergency Preparedness Month.  Our local event was organized by our Limestone County Volunteer Organziation Active in Disasters.  VOAD held its annual BE READY DAY at the Limestone County Event Center on September 26. 

This event is held to help students and the general public to be ready in case of a disaster.  Everyone was given information about what they need to have on hand. Some examples of this information was  escape plans for fires and who the family would need to contact for help.  

In an effort to help young people learn able being prepared, volunteer organizations try to get material that is on the children's level.  The students this year were also treated to the Smithsonian Exhibit as well as a tour of the  Veterans Museum.  

Lunch was also cooked by one of the organizations.  Eveyone had a chance to win door prizes. Teachers' names were placed in a drawing for a Smokie Bear figure and a CD with information about wildfire.  These items were given by the Alabama Forestry Commission. 

Sixth graders (652 of them) participated in this year's "Be Ready Day".  These Limestone young people behaved in a way that was a credit to their schools.  Of course since I'm from Elkmont, I think our students were the best.
