Friendship North in the Crosskey Community of Elkmont, AL is excited to be back again this year with our FLASHLIGHT EGGHUNT! This is a FREE EVENT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY and is so much fun with over 3,000 "candy-filled eggs" and a few prizes.

WHO CAN RESIST BABY GOATS?

Humble Heart Farms is having a Family Fun Day March 25. Hours will be from 11am to 3pm. The theme this year will be "Dairy to the Table".

We will have 10 different flavors of fresh Humble Heart Farms Goat Cheese to taste. Plus our friends from Wrights Dairy will have 6 flavors of raw milk cow cheese to taste.
 
You will also be petting lambs and baby goats. Take your turn feeding the baby goats. Take a tour of the farm and milking barn. Learn how it is done. Humble Heart Farms is North Alabama’s only goat dairy. And it is FREE. Just bring a nice attitude. Sunday’s temps are suppose to be in the upper 60s.

Our Team EES Parents are having a Lucky to Have You celebration for tonight, March 16. We didn't want to have a traditional "Mother/Son, Father/Daughter" dance, because many of our students are cared for by people other than "mom and dad." So, this is our own version where students can bring anyone they are "lucky to have" in their life! 

 

 

ACTIVE SPRING FORECAST - START PLANNING THIS WEEKEND

Hill Spirit has read  several "go to" weather sites that indicate we are going to have active severe weather season this year from now thru May. Showers and thunderstorms will dominate the springtime weather pattern.  Accuweather forecasters are calling for two or three big severe events as early as March. Tornadoes will be sure to make an appearance so make some plans this weekend about what your family will need to do, just in case.

While the rain will be largely beneficial, too much in February and March could make it tough for farmers to get in the fields.

ELKMONT FARMERS KNOW HOW TO GROW CORN

Two local corn growers have been honored by the National Corn Growers Association for their efforts in the 2017 National Corn Yield Contest, according to a press release from the NCGA.
J. Howard Hobbs of Elkmont placed second in the state in the A Non-Irrigated Class with a yield of 236.6382 bushels per acre. Jessie H. Hobbs of Elkmont also placed second in the state in the A No-Till/Strip-Till Non-Irrigated Class with a yield of 251.5775 bushels per acre. Both winning fields were in Alabama.T he contest included 7,269 entries from 46 states. Only 426 were named state winners, including J. Howard and Jessie.

"Our nation's corn farmers stepped up to the plate and hit a home run yet again in 2017," NCGA President Kevin Skunes said.

The average yield among national winners was more than 386 bushels per acre. Five of the national winners recorded yields of 400 bushels or more per acre, with one achieving a new world record of 542.274 bushels per acre.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Alabama averaged a yield of 167 bushels of corn per acre in 2017. Limestone County was the third-highest producer in Alabama, with more than 3.8 million bushels of corn and an average yield of 198.9 bushels per acre in 2017.

CATCHING UP WITH ELKMONT MENS SOCCER

West Limestone Soccer traveled to the Hilltop on March 8. Elkmont’s JV boys beat the Wildcats 5-0, with Henry Amaya, Astul Irias, and Van Hamlin combining for the five goals. The Varsity boys fell 2-0.

Elkmont’s JV team began the week with a 5-0 win over Ardmore. Henry Amaya led the Red Devils with two goals. Van Hamlin, James Hernandez, and Astul Irias rounded out the scoring for Elkmont.

The Varsity Red Devils battled a tough West Morgan team, falling 4-0 to the Rebels in a defensive battle. Elkmont’s Varsity squad made a strong showing against ranked West Morgan (7-1) who had proven to be a nemesis over past seasons. 

The Varsity Red Devils put one in the win column, defeating rival Ardmore 1-0 in a physical contest. Sebastian Amaya scored the winning goal for Elkmont. The JV Red Devils fell to Brewer 6-1 earlier in the evening. Elkmont hosts the county tournament following spring break.

LADY DEVILS SWEEP PAST ARDMORE

The Elkmont Varsity girls shut out the Lady Tigers in the March 15 matchup at Ardmore, 2-0.

JEWELL DEAN MITCHELL - OBITUARY

Jewell Dean Mitchell, age 85 of Elkmont, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Huntsville Hospital. Mrs. Mitchell was born August 5, 1932 in Limestone County, AL to William Lewis Hasting and Lillie Mae Walker Hasting.

Services will be Thursday, March 15, 2018 3:00 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Bro. Buddy Payne and Bro. J.W. Wallace officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Gatlin Cemetery.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Community Baptist Church in Ardmore.

Survived by two daughters, Charlotte Campbell and husband, Tommy of Ardmore, AL and Teresa Jennings and husband, Tim of Fayetteville, TN; two sons, Kerry Mitchell and wife, Diann of Ardmore, AL and Kenny Mitchell of Elkmont, AL; six grandchildren, Shon Campbell, Tonna Heard, Deyon Mitchell, Brandon Mitchell, Timothy Jennings and Shannon Daly; six great-grandchildren, Bailey Gatlin, Brianna Mitchell, Trinity Mitchell, Leah Daly, Riley Daly and Hannah Daly; one great-great-grandchild, Kileigh Gatlin; one sister, Geneva Pylant of Athens, AL.

Pallbearers will be W B Hasting, Charles Hasting, James Reyer, Gary Mitchell, Gerald Mitchell and Bill Belcher. Honorary pallbearer will be Glenn Mitchell.

The Elkmont Schools are the center of our community and many things revolve around it.  Something is always happening on the Hilltop and Chief Donnie occasionally has to remind us why he is there.  This is why the speed limit is low during school hours and activities...so slow down.
