As many of you have heard, the Obama Administration has now
determined they know best on public education matters and issued a
directive threatening legal action against public schools who refuse to allow students to use whichever bathroom they choose, regardless of gender.
This browbeating of local schools by the Administration is a blatant
attempt to push a political agenda and is downright absurd. Today, I
joined with colleagues in demanding the President withdraw this poorly
executed effort immediately. Folks, let’s let common sense prevail.

Elkmont Elementary (K-5) held its annual career day, May 16. Our young Hilltoppers had an opportunity to learn about many of the potential careers that are available to them. Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker, and a million other things, what will they be?
Pilot?
Military?
Cosmetology?
Lineman?
Law Enforcement?
Judge?
Geologist?
... and so many more. Tina McMunn (former 3rd grade teacher at Elkmont) organized all of the presenters.
Mildred H. Kelley, 84 of Athens died Friday at her residence. Mrs. Kelley was born June 22, 1931 in Limestone County.
She was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church. Mrs. Kelley was former owner/operator of Kelley’s Grocery in Cairo Hollow.
Survivors:
Daughter: Carolyn Posey and husband Kenneth of Athens; Son: Gerald
Kelley and wife Betty Sue of Athens; Grandchildren: Brandon Posey,
Sherrie Long, Rhonda Lauderdale, Lori Gooch and Chris Kelley; Great
Grandchildren: Blake and Biranda Lauderdale, Cameron and Kelli Gooch,
Hunter and Hayden Kelley; Brother: Jimmy Hardaway of Elkmont; Nieces and
Nephews. Preceded in death by Husband: Leamon (Buck) Kelley.
Services were at 3PM Sunday at Spry Funeral Home, Chapel with Louis Johnson and
David Jones officiating, burial in Sandlin Cemetery, visitation was from
1pm until service Sunday at Spry Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are
Brandon Posey, Chris Kelley, Blake Lauderdale, Cameron Gooch, Greg
Hardaway and Charlie Long. Honorary Pallbearers are Mike Hardaway, Tom
Davis and Chuck Harness.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Limestone County.
Always fun, always anticipated, shouldn't be missed, Field Day was Friday.
Each year in the last weeks of school,
Elkmont has its elementary field day. It should be on every parent's
bucket list to attend once before their baby grows out of those early
school years.
The Tug of War event is the crowning
jewel of field day; hotly contested, very loud, being a champion is a
thing of great pride.
BARRY'S CORNER
I realized after school that this was the 20th field day at EHS! I saw a
lot of parents today who were elementary students of mine when we had
our first field day. Still hear Mr. Pettus saying "'Barry, it had better be well
planned and organized if you ever want to have another." I thought
today went pretty well! We have an amazing elementary faculty that does a
great job staying on schedule and keeping it "organized" as Mr. Pettus
said. Counting down the days now!

I was running south on the trail today. I was enjoying the solitude and
reminiscing about the past seasons and the kids that I have had the
privilege to coach over the years. The stream that flows down the hill
was running pretty fast today. I was noticing how the water ran through
the rocks. Each rock was touched by the water and even though it will
never run through the same place again that stream was shaped by it.
Kind of like all of the great kids that have ran on that
trail on practice days. I always get a little nostalgic this time of
year as kids I have known most of their lives move on from high school
to their post high school years. I appreciate how they have all ran
through our track and cross country programs. Each have shaped the
program into what it has become today. That stream that started as a
trickle runs strong through the rocks and molds new paths for the next
rain.
What those have done before is important. What you do today will
help those to come. Keep the stream moving forward. Love the kids of
the class of 2016! Good luck and God bless! Have a good one!

Lovely this morning but....
Strong thunderstorms are still possible this afternoon and into the
evenings hours. A couple thunderstorms may become severe with the
greatest threats being damaging wind gusts and hail up to the size of
quarters.
The timing of these storms is slightly uncertain and will
partially be determined by how widespread showers are early this morning
with lingering outflow boundaries. Then, we should see scattered
showers/storms in the afternoon, which is when the strongest storms
would be, and another line of thunderstorms after 7 PM with the cold
front.
