ELKMONT WINS TWO IN THANKSGIVING TOURNEY

Elkmont's Thanksgiving tournament was a round robin format.  One day was lost because of a weather scare, so Elkmont only played two games.  The Red Devils stayed undefeated with a 63-32 win over Riverside Christian Academy and a 56-44 win over Pope John Paul II High School.  

Against Riverside, Cole Glass and Hayden Huseth led the way.  Glass had 16 points, 9 rebounds and Huseth had 17 points.  Against John Paul II (Huntsville Catholic), Huseth had 17 points, Glass had 12 and Daniel Logan had a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Box scores are available at the Elkmont Basketball Blog.


Observations:
The Red Devils are playing very well and look like a determined team on a mission.  Their team defense is the strength of the team and their shooting is surprisingly good for this early in the season.  Matthew Barnes and Bryant Wales are playing well off the bench.


Predictions:
This week Elkmont hosts Athens Bible School on Monday and Clements on Tuesday.  They travel to West Limestone on Friday.  Clements is the first area game and it is very important to get off to good start in the area.  The Dust Devil predicts a 20+  point win over ABS; a tough but solid win over Clements; and a 5 point loss to West Limestone on the road.

HOMER LEE JEWELL - OBITUARY

Homer Lee Jewell, 85, of Athens, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at his residence. Mr. Jewell was born April 3, 1926, in Limestone County to Irby Lee Jewell and Alice Lee Bost Jewell.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery with Chris Jewell and David Sherry officiating.

Mr. Jewell was a member of New Garden Pentecostal Church, a United States Navy veteran of World War II and a retired homebuilder.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irby and Alice Jewell; sister, Catherine White; brothers, Bill Jewell and Horace Jewell.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Jackson Jewell of Athens; sons, Don Jewell and wife Janice of Athens; Morris Jewell and wife Mary of Elkmont; daughter, Anita Sherry and husband David of Sioux Falls, S.D.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Margaret Lawrence and Barbara Jackson, both of Elkmont, Ruth Reeves of Rogersville and Dorothy Draper of Athens; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Chris Jewell, Daniel Jewell, Trent Jackson, Mark Jewell, Alton White and Eric Jewell. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandchildren.

ROBBIE NELL MASSEY - OBITUARY

The funeral for Robbie Nell Massey, 73, of Elkmont will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at McConnell Funeral Home with Terry Lamar officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery.

Visitation is from 10-11:15 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Massey passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at Limestone Health Facility.

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING

I came across this today as I was reading and wanted to share this with you.  Some food for thought as we all enjoy being with family,  eating some wonderful Southern cookin' and talking about the Iron Bowl.



"We do know some things about the first Thanksgiving. But William Bradford, Plymouth's perennial governor, and his assistant, Edward Winslow, are the only contemporary writers who mention it. They described the celebration briefly. The occasion was a successful harvest after months of extreme hardship and deprivation. The Mayflower survivors invited the Indian king Massasoit to their celebration, and he came with ninety-some of his men. The Pilgrims provided waterfowl and turkey; the Indians added five deer. There were games and athletic contests (William Brewster would probably watch the Lions-Packers game if he were alive today!), and even a joint militia drill. The celebration lasted three days. But neither Bradford nor Winslow actually called the feast "Thanksgiving," and neither mentioned prayers of thanks or any kind of worship service. This has given occasion for some historians to question whether this "first Thanksgiving" was a religious celebration at all. But that's because they don't know the Pilgrims and what they really believed.

Grace and Thankfulness

The Pilgrims were children of the Reformation. Like the 16th century Reformers, they were fully committed to the biblical doctrine of justification by faith. They understood that God graciously declares guilty sinners righteous on the basis of Christ's perfect obedience and substitutionary death, that this gift of legally transferred righteousness is received by faith alone and that such faith is itself the gift of a sovereign God. But they also knew that grace doesn't end there. They, no less than the Reformers, had faced the obvious questions: "Why then should believers do good works?  Doesn't the doctrine of justification by faith lead to antinomianism and lawlessness?"
The Pilgrim answer, and the answer of Scripture, involves the nature of saving faith and the work of the Spirit who grants it. In bringing us sinners to faith, the Holy Spirit changes our hearts. He implants joy and a spirit of thankfulness. He gives the converted sinner a delight in serving God. And this thankfulness then, becomes itself a great comfort.

Comfort and Joy

The Heidelberg Catechism (1563) is one the oldest Reformed confessions and one the Pilgrims ran into when in Holland. (John Robinson even participated in the theological debates at the University in Leiden.) The questions and answers of the Heidelberg Catechism were framed in terms of comfort and joy, which no doubt shaped Pilgrim thought. In fact, its first question is, "What is thy only comfort in life and in death?"  The answer is this:
That I, with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ, who, with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must work together for my salvation. Wherefore, by his Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready henceforth to live unto him.
The Catechism's second question introduces the issue of happiness:  What must we know to live and die happily in this comfort?  The answer is threefold and for the Pilgrims, a constant reminder:  1) we must know the greatness of our sin and misery; 2) we must know the means of our redemption; and 3) we must know the proper way to be thankful to God. In other words, in order to "live and die happily," we must not only know how to be saved, but we must also know how to be "thankful to God" for our salvation. The Pilgrims believed happiness grows and is completed in thankfulness. Thankfulness enables the forgiven sinner to enjoy the comfort of the gospel happily, that is, with true joy.

Why Thanksgiving?

But a question arises. Is God being selfish in wanting a thankful people?  Not at all. First, as the Source of all life, joy, and blessedness, He knows Himself to be our highest good. Second, He knows that we can't fully enjoy Him or His gifts apart from true thankfulness. After all, this is the very nature of joy. When we enjoy a thing, we are thankful for it. We praise the gift to the giver and so enjoy both.

• "What a fantastic dinner!  It was the best ever. Thank you."
• "Thank you!  Thank you so much!  I never thought I'd see Wittenberg."

When we find joy in another human being, we show our joy and gratitude with words and actions. We praise and magnify the one we love. We are thankful to love and to be loved.

• "I'm proud of you, son. You're the best."
• "I thank God for you every day. My life wouldn't be the same without you."
• "There's no one else like you!  I love you so much!"

Joy finds its fulfillment in thankfulness, in praise and thanksgiving. Silent joy is a contradiction. Mute appreciation isn't really thanks. God requires our thanksgiving so that our joy may be full.

The Joy of the Lord

It seems odd that when theologians list the attributes of God, they rarely include joy. A few speak of His "blessedness."  But joy isn't one we use much. An older writer, William Wisheart (1716), defined God's blessedness as that attribute, whereby "having all fullness of perfection and sufficiency in himself, he doth most perfectly and unchangeably enjoy himself."  God is wholly blessed in that He fully understands, loves, and delights in His own infinite perfections. For He is absolute life, perfectly good, and wholly glorious. There is nothing we can add to His joy. There is nothing we can give Him that He has not first given us. And so He does not thank us. But He does rejoice over us. He rejoices over His covenant people (Zeph. 3:17). He rejoices in the works of His hands (Ps. 104:31).


This divine joy is especially Trinitarian. The Father loves and delights in His Son (Matt. 17:5). He honors and glorifies Him (John 17:5). The Son rejoices in His Father (Prov. 8:30-31). He seeks His honor, rather than His own (John 17:4). The Spirit brings glory to the Son and not to Himself (John 16:14). From eternity, God is overflowing joy and delight. Furthermore, Jesus in His humanity regularly gave thanks to His Father. He did so before every meal (John 6:11). He gave thanks when He sang songs of praise, whether in the synagogue or in private worship (Mark 14:26). And on more than one occasion, He stopped in the middle of a public conversation or discourse and said, "I thank thee, O Father..." (Matt. 11:25; John 11:41). The joy of the Triune God overflows in the thankfulness of the divine Messiah. It overflows in the praises of all those who call themselves Christians.

Conclusion

The Pilgrims, Puritans, and Reformers are almost always portrayed as obsessive killjoys and miserable downers. There's little truth in that image. Joy wasn't an afterthought for our Pilgrim forefathers. For them, joy stood at the beginning, in the center, and at the end. For them, God was joy, even when they were hungry and that same joy expressed itself in thankfulness. For the Pilgrims, a day of rejoicing is necessarily a day of thanksgiving. And throughout Scripture that sort of rejoicing means feasting, fellowship, and worship. The Pilgrims were deeply committed Christians who had braved an ocean and a wilderness to seek and serve God. When they rejoiced together, it would not--could not--be other than a time of thanksgiving to their Lord and Savior. Yes, the Pilgrims gave thanks to God and so should all of us."

HAVE A BLESSED DAY AND COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Thanksgiving Fun! Here is a fun memory game to play around the table. The mental exercise may help keep people awake at the end of a high-carbohydrate meal that makes one sleepy. Have the first player start by saying, "At the first Thanksgiving dinner, the Pilgrims ate turkey." Go around the table—the next player must repeat the sentence and add another dish. For example, the second player might say, "At the first Thanksgiving dinner, the Pilgrims ate turkey and cranberry sauce." The game continues with each player repeating the Pilgrims’ menu and adding a new item to it. When a player makes a mistake, he/she is eliminated. The game continues until there is only one player left. The winner gets a nap!

Chelsee Nash/Cole Thornton Wedding

Chelsee Dyan Nash of Athens and Cole Timothy Thornton of Pembroke Pines, Fla., were married in a 6 p.m. ceremony Sept. 10 at Pelican Beach Resort with Ashley Pogue officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Tracy Goode of Athens. She is the granddaughter of Virginia Goode of Athens and the late Jerry Goode.

The groom is the son of Tim and Nancy Thornton of Athens. He is the grandson of Bessie Pepper of Athens and Joyce Thornton of Elkmont and the late Douglas Pepper and Clayton Thornton.

The bride was given in marriage by her mother Tracy Goode.

Matron of honor was Whitney Nash Looney, sister of the bride. Bridal attendants were Whitney Nicole Craig, Brooke Parker Parsons and Brook Davidson White.

Brandon Norwood served as best man. Groomsmen were Jonathan Spry, John Robertson and Cody Eldridge.

The ringbearer was Camden Gage Hulsey. Music was provided by Brad Goode.

A reception followed the ceremony at The Pelican Beach Resort Conference Center.

The couple resides in Pembroke Pines.

RUBY HARRISON KING HALL - OBITUARY

The funeral for Ruby Harrison King Hall, 85, of Athens will be at 11 a.m. today at Sardis Springs Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sardis Springs Church Cemetery with Tim Keenum officiating.

Mrs. Hall passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Limestone Health Facility.

Ruby Hall was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Limestone County to Hagan King and Leear Foster King. She was a member of Sardis Springs Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Hall.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Adams, Linda Smith and husband Bussy, all of Athens, and Susan Brock and husband Darryl of Elkmont; two sons, Jerry Hall and wife Deborah of Decatur, and Joey Hall and wife Terri of Athens; two brothers, W.G. King and wife Betty, and Wayne King, all of Athens.

JUANITA ANN ANDERTON

he funeral for Juanita Ann Anderton, 63, of Athens will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Spry Funeral Home with Ross Clemmons officiating. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.

Visitation is from noon until time of the service Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Anderton passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at home.

Juanita Anderton was born Sept. 4, 1948, in Limestone County to Carl and Clara Hobbs.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Survivors include daughters, Lisa Perry and Honey Bentley, both of Athens, Dana Sprinkle of Toney and Lottie Partridge of Elkmont; son, Travis Whitt of Athens; brothers, Charlie Hobbs of Athens and Doug “Chunk” Hobbs of Ardmore; sister, Rosa Crawford of Athens; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Samuel Black, Chase Michaels, Zachary Hobbs, Bradley Dollar, Carl Hobbs and Jon Vennison. The honorary pallbearer is Tyler Hobbs.

DONALD LEE CHRISTIAN - OBITUARY

The funeral for Donald Lee Christian Sr., 70, of Elkmont will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sardis Springs Cemetery with Tony Boyles officiating.

Visitation will be from 1-2:45 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Christian passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at Huntsville Hospital.

Donald Christian Sr. was born Aug. 28, 1941, in Solano County, Calif., to William Allen Christian and Frances Evelyn Coleman Christian. He was retired from SCI and worked many years for Motorola-UDS. Mr. Christian was active in Ares Club and Six Meter Net (ham radio clubs).

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Christian of Elkmont; daughter, Stephanie Christian of Birmingham; sons, Donald L. Christian Jr. of Huntsville, Allen Christian and wife Fonda of Birmingham, Micky B. Christian and wife Adrianna of Elkmont, and Anthony D. Hamley and wife Melissa of Birmingham; brother, Robert Christian of Banning, Calif.; sister, Colleen Vieweg of Tucson, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Donald L. Christian Jr., Allen Christian, Micky Christian, Paul King, Jeff Leopard and Anthony Hamley. Honorary pallbearers are Tab Bowling and Robert Hill.

ELKMONT WINS OPENER - DUST DEVIL AT THE GYM

The Red Devils shook off some football rust in the first quarter to score 23 points in the second quarter and take a 15 point lead into halftime.  Skyler Gant made a 3 pointer from just inside midcourt to end the half.  Elkmont continued to play well in the second half and won 61-38 over New Hope in the Indian's gym. 

OBSERVATIONS:

Considering they only had four days of practice, winning by 23 points on the road against a decent New Hope team is a great way to start.  Elkmont plays outstanding defense, plays hard and is very unselfish.  Against New Hope, Skyler Gant, Hayden Huseth and Daniel Logan played very well.  Gant handled the ball well, made several pretty mid-range jumpers and took the ball strong to the basket.   Huseth played great defense and was excellent at releasing and finishing several fast break baskets.  Logan rebounded well, played excellent inside defense and made several beautiful outlet passes to Huseth for easy baskets.  Andrew LaBath played solid at the point position.  The bench came in and contributed.

The Dust Devil believes that Cole Glass was the MVP of the game.  Not starting because he missed a practice during the week, he came in focused and determined, quickly stole the ball and made a dunk over a New Hope Indian to spark a Red Devil run.  He rebounded well and scored a game high 16 points.

PREDICTION:

Elkmont will play well and win 2 of 3 in their Thanksgiving Tournament that starts Monday @ 8:30 pm in the Red Devil gym.

ROBERT LEON CLARK - OBITUARY

The funeral for Robert Leon Clark, 74, of Athens will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home with James Howard and Debbie Eubanks officiating. Burial will be in Gatlin Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dylan Smith, Rob Taylor, Donnie Hart, Herman Jefferson, Tommy Dale and Johnny Henderson.

Visitation is from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Clark died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at home.

Robert Clark was born Thursday, Dec. 17, 1936, in Itmann, W.Va. He was the son of the late Curtis Clark and Clara Saunders Clark. Robert Clark lived in the area for the past 32 years, after arriving from West Virginia. He loved playing the guitar, hunting and fishing. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Mr. Clark was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister and a grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Clark of Athens; son, Ray Maddox and companion Kim Moody of Elkmont; daughters, Sherry Tinnpenney and husband Steve of Bland, Va., Cynthia Locke and companion Wayne Norton of Rogersville, and Patricia Clark and companion Randall Haggard of Athens; sisters, Rosie Davis of Rock, W.Va., Phylis Duncan of Lerona, W.Va., and Sue Wadkins of Princeton, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren
