DID YOU KNOW THAT TEA TREE OIL CAN ........

Nature's healer: 14 amazing uses for tea tree oil l

Tea tree oil, sometimes called melaleuca oil, is distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, which is native to Australia. Tea tree oil has a fresh, camphor-like scent and a pale yellow to nearly clear appearance.  For centuries, Aboriginal tribes boiled the tea tree leaves of the tea tree to make antiseptic poultices to soothe and treat wounds and skin problems. In fact, an Aboriginal legend describes a lagoon surrounded by tea trees where people bathed to heal their burns and cuts. Tea tree has so many anti-viral and anti-fungal benefits that Australia has traditionally placed it in first aid kits for its soldiers.

Today tea tree oil is available online and in natural foods stores in small dark bottles (to prevent damage by light) for roughly $6 to $7 for a two-ounce bottle. It sounds expensive until you realize you use only a few drops at a time, and how much those few drops can accomplish.
Here are is an alphabetical list of some of the many benefits and uses for tea tree oil.

1. Acne. Tea tree oil is a natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide for treating skin blemishes, plus it will not dry your skin by stripping it of its natural oils or cause redness and peeling. Use a cotton swab to dab a drop or two of oil gently on the blemish. If you have sensitive skin, dilute a few drops of oil with olive oil.

2. Blisters and boils. Tea tree oil is great to have in the medicine cabinet to soothe and treat minor skin abrasions and cuts. After gently cleaning the affected area, apply a few drops of the oil directly to the wound. Or apply a few drops of the oil to a cotton ball, place it on the wound and cover with a bandage. For blisters, apply a drop of oil directly to the wound. Allow it to dry, and then dust with corn starch. Repeat every few hours or until the blister disappears. For boils, first apply a warm washcloth for a few minutes. Then add a drop or two of tea tree oil to the area.  The infection should rise to surface.

3. Cleaning. Add tea tree oil to your natural household cleaning arsenal. To create a fresh-smelling all-purpose natural cleaner, combine two teaspoons of tea tree oil and two cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake to mix. The spray is great for cleaning kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces and high chairs.

4. Earaches. Relieve a painful, aching ear by adding two drops of tea tree oil to 2 tablespoons of warm olive oil. Drop one or two drops into aching ear. Repeat several times daily.
Amazing survival uses for tea tree oil
5. Fungus prevention. Tea tree oil is useful for treating athlete’s foot, eczema and nail fungus. For athlete’s’ foot, first clean feet thoroughly. Then add oil directly to feet, dusting with corn starch afterwards. Repeat daily. Another option is to add 10 drops of oil to one tablespoon of grape seed oil or olive oil or carrier oil and massage on feet and in between toes daily. For nail fungus, place one or two drops of oil directly on nail and the surrounding tissue. Allow to dry. Repeat twice a day for one week.

6. Insect repellent. Combine 15 drops of tea tree oil in a quart of water to use as an effective insect repellent. Also, placing a drop of tea tree oil directly on ticks will get them to unlatch themselves.

7. Laundry. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your laundry load to give a fresh scent. Forget to put your towels in the dryer? Add one half teaspoon of tea tree oil to the load as you place them in the dryer to get rid of any musty odor.

8. Mold and Mildew. The same water and tea tree oil mix as for the cleaning spray will help control mold and mildew in a bathroom or damp basement. Another option is to mix apple cider vinegar with a few drops of tea tree oil. Shake well and spray on areas with mold and mildew.  Then wipe away.

9. Odor. Tea tree oil’s fresh scent really helps cut down on unpleasant odors. Use a water/oil mix to clean a diaper pail. Or place a few cotton balls moistened with tea tree oil in a small bowl in areas where odors linger, such as the bathroom or kitty litter pan area.

10. Psoriasis. To soothe psoriasis, add 10 drops tea tree oil to one tablespoon olive oil and gently massage into skin. Repeat two to three times a day.

11. Ringworm. Apply a drop or two of oil directly to affected area. If you are sensitive, mix with olive oil. Repeat two to three times a day.

12. Sunburn: To soothe sunburned skin or minor kitchen burns, mix one tablespoon coconut oil with one drop of tea tree oil and one drop of lavender oil. Apply gently to the affected skin.

13. Toothbrushes: Clean and sanitize toothbrushes by applying two to three drops of oil to the brushes and then thoroughly rinsing them.

14. Warts: Apply one or two drops of oil directly on the wart morning and night until the wart begins to disappear. You may dilute with a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin.

BRIANNE HARGROVE - PINKERTON AWARD

A new scholarship was presented during this year's Elkmont High School Class Day.  The Hilltop Arts Society Pinkerton Award is awarded to an Elkmont High School senior to help them fund their college education.  This $750 scholarship can be used at any university or college.  The Pinkerton requires a student to submit photos of their art work or performance, write a 500 word essay on the importance of art in the community and to show proof of community involvement and service.

It is with great honor that the Hilltop Arts Society named Ms. Brianne Hargrove recipient of the inaugural Pinkerton award.  Ms. Hargrove has an interest in Music, Dance, and Photography, and she will be beginning her college career at the University of North Alabama this fall.

More About the Pinkerton Award:
Hello, my name is Preston Pylant and I am the founder of the Hilltop Arts Society.   When I started on this venture 3 years ago it was to bring something fun and different to the community,  but also to encourage kids who love art,  but who live in a world that is ceasing to educate and produce the next generation of great artists.I want to encourage those students with talent and even those without natural talent to pick up a paint brush, to write a line of poetry, to act out a scene, to play their favorite bars of music, and to use their talents for the betterment of their community.

For the past two years the Hilltop Arts Society with support from the Town of Elkmont has held the Hilltop Arts Festival downtown.   Artists from all over North Alabama have gathered in our town to showcase and sell their work and play their music, and we have been blessed to be a part of such a special gathering.    The question was left, however, on how to spend the money raised by hosting the festival.   It made sense that the money should go to the support of future of art in our area, and that an art scholarship would be the best way to achieve this.   Thus, the Pinkerton Award was formed.

The Pinkerton award is named after 2002 graduate of Elkmont High School Neil Pinkerton.  Neil was a fantastic musician, actor, artist and friend.   Tragically Neil was killed in automobile accident shortly after his graduation, but we remember him often for the uniqueness of his spirit and the greatness of his talent. Neil was never able to achieve his full potential as an artist, and this award is a way to remember Neil’s artistic spirit by helping another artist on their path to reaching their potential.

ELKMONT IS BECOMING THE PLACE TO BE

If it’s up to Tasia Malakasis, Elkmont Alabama will be the next Marfa. The place where all the cool kids travel miles out of their way to get to. We think she’s onto something. The world-famous cheesemaker took a chance on Elkmont when she bought Belle Chevre creamery in 2007. Last year she opened an 8,000 square foot creamery. Now, right down the street from Belle Chevre and its sister tasting room, kindred spirits are following suit. We sat down with Tasia–yes there was goat cheese and candied bacon involved–recently and learned all about what’s happening in Elkmont.

This small town, once made strong by cotton and the railroad, is poised for a resurgence, led by artisans, creatives, and enterprising business owners. “Elkmont is steeped in a very rich Southern history and culture and is now embracing its historical respect for the arts, food, and the maker in a modern way,” she says, nibbling on sandwiches with what else but goat cheese.

“Saving old buildings that once housed cotton from its own fertile soil, artists are being lifted up and celebrated in monumental ways, and architects and historians are bringing traditions forward with a playful nod to the future of the town and the South as a whole.”

So far the creamery, which offers tours and tasting, and the tasting room, has been the main draw for visitors. In the coming months, two new businesses will open just down the street from Belle Chevre, which Tasia believes will bring likeminded visitors to the tiny town.

You will also find Paper Trail Antiques where you can find lots of good treasures, right in between Belle Chevre and U.G. White!! And just around the corner in front of Elkmont Church of Christ you can find a little blue building where you can get awesome breakfast & lunch at Devilicious Thurs.-Sat!! And for a great activity with your family check out Upper-Fort Hampton Outfitters, here you can paddle-board and kayak!

Next month, U.G. Mercantile opens an outpost in the building which once housed a feed store, barber shop, and antiques store. The sister store to the Athens U.G. Mercantile (just down the road), it’ll be packed with similar goods — cast iron skillets, candy by the pound,  oil lamps, and
Patagonia. Plus there will also be a spot where visitors can rent outdoor equipment. (An 8.8.-mile Rails-to-Trails path starts at the restored railroad depot just outside the shop.)

Then in August, Artisan South opens next door. Owned by brothers Robert and Lonnie Key, the store will feature handmade, artisan goods from around the region. “No, we’re going to sell real things made by real people,” Robert says. Among the items that will be featured: furniture by Tennessee-based Alan Daigre Designs, handblown glass by Alabama-based Orbix Hot Glass and Cotton and Quill linens. Down the street there’s the Red Caboose, which brings in singer-songwriters from around the region (13 Grammy winners so far).

WHAT OUR NEIGHBORS DO FOR US

The Elkmont Fire Department rolled out of the fire department around 5:30 pm.  A trailer fire was on Slate Road close to New Garden and our volunteers were there to help.  They had been out there the day before for a fire in a back room that had been added to it. Elkmont and Oak Grove was paged out with about 25 fire fighters responding.  They had to cut holes in the roof to help vent it.

After a few hours and overhaul it was out again; nobody was hurt.  Thanks to everybody that did
come or stop and brought cold water and Gatorade.  It's great how we support our community.  They do keep drinking water on trucks but there is no way to keep it cold.  With it being 92 outside and the guys in full turnout gear, they can get very hot real fast so the cold water was greatly appreciated.   Think of our fire fighters who come when called to help their neighbors and please be careful when you are burning something in the back 40.

SHOULD YOU PRE-BUY YOUR PROPANE GAS THIS SUMMER?

The Hill Spirit tries to let the people of Elkmont know about things that might affect the pocketbook.  One thing that costs a lot is heating your home during the winter.  Some of us use propane gas for that or the hot water heater.  As a propane customer, you might consider buying gas for the winter during your supplier's summer pre-buy program.  It allows you to lock in the price for the amount of gas you think you will use until next summer.

Joe Bastardi, my favorite forecaster at Weatherbell.com,  predicted a cold winter last year so the Hill Spirit ordered extra gas. I bought 700 gallons at $2.35 last summer. That paid off as the price went over $3.50 per gallon last winter; didn't have to buy a single gallon at that price.  Joe  believes we are in for rough weather this winter.

Hill Spirit is again planning ahead and is buying 800 gallons for this winter. If you are a blog reader, you know that the Hill Spirit is big on being prepared.    If we get a big ice storm, and we are due for one, how prepared are you for power outages? The time to prepare for a storm is before the storm hits, not after.

HOW COLD IS IT GOING TO BE?

PRECIPITATION

SNOWFALL

Article from Accuweather Blog:

Joe Bastardi believes there is a significant chance for particularly frigid winters in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 into 2014-2015. Bastardi said these winters could be similar to winters of the late 1970s. He said, “While the most consistent of the cold is to the north, severe bouts of cold deep into Texas and Florida would be capable of affecting agriculture more so than we’ve seen in that last 20 years or so.”

A combination of factors that parallel the precursors to historically cold winters is leading Bastardi to this forecast. He said, “We have a cold Pacific now. We had a La Nina, El Nino, then a stronger La Nina [similar to the cycle] that happened in the early to mid ’70s that set up the winters of the late ’70s.”

These weather patterns, plus the wild cards of volcanic activity and solar activity, have Bastardi looking ahead. “The last time we had arctic volcanoes go off, in 1912—similar to what we had two winters ago—the winters three years removed got very bad across the United States,” Bastardi said. “If we put together the combination of La Nina, El Nino, La Nina again and we look at what happened when that happened before with a cold Pacific, and we also understand that the volcanoes may be involved along with the low sunspot activity, one could come to the conclusion that a series of very cold winters … could be on the way,” he said.

Bastardi said this is all part of a natural pattern of reversal which he believes will lead to a crash in global temperatures over the next nine months, from the very warm levels set off by El Nino—as forecast globally by AccuWeather.com.
In the longer term, this is all part of a cyclical event which Bastardi believes will return the earth’s temperatures by 2030 back to where they were in the late ’70s at the end of the last cold PDO [Pacific Decadal Oscillation or El Nino like pattern] and the beginning of the satellite era of measuring temperatures objectively.

SMOKIN' AT THE RAILROAD

The Lions Club uses the proceeds from the event to help with purchasing eyeglasses and eye exams for students in the Elkmont School District.  It also funds two $1500 scholarships for Elkmont seniors to aid them in paying for their college.  The Elkmont Lions Club also help to send children to Seale Harris, a camp for children with diabetes.
