FALL SPORTS IS HERE

Elkmont's fall sports season has started. We all love love reading about our boys and girls of fall so Hill Spirit is looking for game reporters from kindergarten up to varsity. 

There are football, volleyball and cross country teams to pick from. You will only read about your team if someone reports the good news.  It can be as simple as the teams playing, score and a few pictures but would love to read about the game and the box score ( summary of the game stats).  Please include a roster and a team picture if you can. Some of our past reporters were the Dust Devil, Taz and Runnin' Gretta if you would like to read some examples.  
 
Most of my reporters prefer not to have a byline.  If you want to use your name or a pen name, let the Hill Spirit know. You can submit your posts at elkmont1@charter.net or message Hill Spirit on facebook.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL BEGINS

Elkmont's middle school volleyball team traveled to East Limestone for their first match of the season. 

The Lady Devils played the Indians in two close sets, 25-17 and 25-21, but were unable to take the lead for the win. Elkmont will be heading to Danville for a double header this Thursday.  Best of luck to our young Lady Devils.

CROSS COUNTRY - BROOKS INVITATIONAL

Great race today!! Girls and boys placed 4th! Claudia Allen came in 8th place receiving a medal and T shirt. Chase Prater also received awards, finishing 4th. My teams made me proud! 

The "rebuilding" year has started out amazing. Top five boys finished 21 minutes and below. The boys team all finished under 23 minutes. They have worked hard all summer and it is paying off. Great day!

ANNIE LOU GOODIN - OBITUARY

Annie Lou Goodin, age 91 of Athens, AL passed away on Friday, September 1, 2017 at her home. Mrs. Goodin was born on February 19, 1926 in Athens, AL to Carl Rex and Ada Roosevelt Lauderdale.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles Wesley Goodin. Mrs. Goodin worked at Athens Lingerie for 25 years. She attended Huntsville Bible classes.
 

Mrs. Goodin is survived by four daughters who all graduated from Elkmont, Charlotte Jeffreys (Kyle), Joan White (Milton), Vicky Goodin and Joyce Kimbrell (T.C.); sister, Mary Sue Pugh; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Services for Mrs. Goodin will be 4:30PM Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Joel Carwile officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-4:15 PM prior to the service. Burial will be in Myers Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wesley Beddingfield, John Robinson, Joel Marbut, David Marbut, Kevin White, Kent White, Keith White and Hayden White.

BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT

Sitting here at lunch and reading all of the tributes to Leah. She was a strong young lady. One of my memories of her is when she was in the 2nd grade. We would be on the playground and when I blew the whistle it was time to line up and go inside. Never failed that every time Leah was still playing and I would have to call her by name to line up. This happened almost every time. I finally asked her one time why she didn't line up and she told me she was having so much fun she didn't want to stop and go in. 

I think that sums it up. She lived her life to the fullest everyday and enjoyed cheering, softball, church, volunteering and smiling as she walked these halls and sidewalks daily. 

She had to feel bad and some days you could see it but she just didn't want to "go in" yet. Such a special young lady. Such an inspiration to so many! 

She is where she belongs now. She is where we should all strive to be one day. She has "gone in" to greater things. Pray for her family and Trace. Have a good one!

WINGS FOR LEAH

The Elkmont community  lost a sweet angel last night but Heaven gained one.  Leah Seibert fought cancer for several years and touched the lives of so many people along the way. She accomplished more in the short eighteen years that she graced this world than many who live much longer.

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT LEAH

Thinking of our sweet Leah, her family, and her friends today. Praying for peace and comfort for all. What an inspiration and true joy to be around such a wonderful young lady and Christian. In our fight against the devil in this world, Leah set such a wonderful example of faith and hope. I am thankful I was able to teach this sweet young lady. I am even more thankful for the belief that I have in knowing Leah is at home in heaven with God, Jesus, and the angels singing praises and being whole!

It is very difficult walking into a school that doesn't understand your heartache. It makes me miss Elkmont and realize how great it is to have a community help bear your burdens. You did not have to be Leah's best friend or talk to her everyday for her to have an impact on you. No matter how much pain she was in, she always managed to put a smile on her face and that always put a smile on mine. I hope we can all get to the point of having the confidence of heaven that she did.

My heart is broken, as is everyone's who knew Leah. When the office was so hectic, she would always say, "I got you, Mrs. Gina." And she did! I will try very hard today, and in the coming days, to thank God for placing that sweet, funny, sassy, precious child in my life. I've never known anyone stronger. And I'll remember her in the little things. Lemon Jolly Ranchers and candy corn and all her super cute outfits. How blessed I am to have been loved by that child. Praise God, she is healed!

 

So this morning we lost a beautiful soul. Leah you will forever be in my heart. You had a great impact on my life. You showed me to never keep fighting. I know your suffering has end and your in a better place now. I love you so much. Now I don't know if this was a sign of god but this morning when I hear about Leah Seibert all I could do is cry. Then I got in my car and started driving and the song "See you again" came on. I know I'll see you one day again.

Leah fought a good fight, she finished her course, and she kept the faith. Leah is completely healed now; she has a new home in Heaven. She doesn't have to suffer anymore; she is in a perfect place. Her Savior had the perfect plan for Leah's life. Although we don't understand why young people have to be taken away from us, He knows all. 
 

Leah was an inspiration to all who met her or followed her on Loving Leah. She was a fighter who never gave up. Her determination will never be forgotten. The love that she showed to others will never be forgotten. Leah will never be forgotten. We will always remember our Loving Leah. Our love for her will continue.

As always, please continue to pray for Kay and Wade. They will desperately need your prayers. Trace is a gift from God for Leah. Please lift him up in your prayers, along with Leah's many family members and friends. We would like for you to pray for the entire Elkmont community and school. Leah was a proud Red Devil to the end; she loved her school and community. We all love her and will miss her dearly.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." 2 Timothy 4: 7-8

Leah's visitation will be Thursday, August 31st from 5:00 to 9:00 in the Elkmont High School gymnasium. The funeral will be held Friday, September 1st at 2:00pm at Limestone Chapel.

MEET THE LADY DEVILS - VOLLEYBALL STARTS THIS WEEK

Elkmont High School will be opening their 2017 season this Saturday.  The Mars Hill games scheduled for today were cancelled due to Leah Siebert's visitation and funeral. LEAH JOY SEIBERT - OBITUARY

Leah Joy Seibert of Athens passed away August 30, 2017, after a long and brave battle with cancer. She was born December 1, 1998. She was the adopted daughter of Henry Seibert of Clanton, AL and the late Cathy Malone Seibert.

She is survived by her parents, Wade and Kay Loggins, her devoted boyfriend. Trace Birdwell, her special extended family, David and Joanne Mandel, Brian Mandel, Ryan, Amie and Katlyn Mandel, Ryan, Elizabeth and Elliot Ash; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Leah was a member of Elkmont Church of Christ and a 2017 graduate of Elkmont High School.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 31, 2017, at Elkmont High School gymnasium from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Funeral will be Friday, September 1, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with Steve Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mike Brock, David Dowd, Curt Hoillingsworth, Joe Bates, Steve Bates and Sam McMeans. Honorary pallbearers will be Lester Smith, Clifton Moss and Bill Tribble.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or Huntsville Hospital Foundation Pediatric Hematology, 910 Adams St. Suite 310 Huntsville, AL 3580l.
