YOUTH SOFTBALL REPORT - DIAMOND DAZZLER

March 31, 2012
It is a beautiful spring day as the Elkmont 1, 12U  Lady Devils take the field against the East 2 Lady Indians that sees many twists and turns before the game ends.

Bailey Vining is on the mound for the Lady Devils and maybe has a case of the first game jitters as she walks the first batter, # 15 Katie.  Katie eventually comes around and scores the only run of the inning for the Indians on a passed ball at the plate. Vining then retires the next 2 batters on strike outs.   The pitcher for the Indians # 14 Jordan comes to the plate and walks, but is left on base as the next batter, # 24 Kelsi grounded out to the first baseman Anna Grace Wales, for the third out.

Bailey Vining and Rachel Smith both get on board with bunts and score the first two runs for the Lady Devils with throwing errors by the Indians to lead with a score of 2-1. Anna Grace Wales goes down looking on a strike out, followed by Natalie Butler who goes down swinging. Baylee Brewer gets on board and makes it to second base with a walk but is stranded when Kylee Haney flys out to the pitcher for the third out.

The second inning proves to be the inning that belongs to both pitchers, Vining retires the next three batters looking for 3 up and 3 down. The Lady Devils come to the plate with Stephanie Bates who gets on base by hitting a ground ball to the second baseman but is left on base when Natalie Bartlow & Makayla Flanagan strike out  and Grace DeVine flys out to the catcher.

The third inning is another inning of 3 up and 3 down for both teams, with Vining striking out the first batter at the bottom of the line-up. Coming back to the top of the line-up for the Indians, #15 Katie hits a hard ball to center field but the ball is thrown in and she is tagged out at second base.  The third batter of the inning, # 2 Alleyna hits a hard ball down third baseline to left field for what seems to be a triple but Natalie Bartlow gets the throw in to Kylee Haney who tags her out at third to close out the inning.

Going into the fourth inning, the Lady Devils are leading 2-1 and the sun is beginning to slip in and out behind the clouds and thunder can be heard to the North.  The Indians are in the middle of the batting lineup as the first batter up #4 Jillian hits a ground ball to the second baseman, Stephanie Bates, who scoops it up and tosses it over to first  base for the first out.  The next batter #14 Jordan  walks, putting the tying run on base. She steals around and steals home, tying the game up at 2 each. The next batter, #24 Kelsi hits a high fly ball to right field, is awarded a triple, and will eventually during the next at bat steal home to put the Lady Indians up 3-2. This brings #16 Emily up to bat, who is walked, but is called out during the next at bat for leaving the bag early for out #2. Vining retires the next batter #18 Harley for the last out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Devils need to find a way to score and quickly tie this game up as the thunder gets closer and the threat of rain  quickly approaching. Anna Grace Wales is up to bat but strikes out for the first out.   Natalie Butler with a 2-0 count grounds out to the second baseman for the second out. The Lady Devils are looking for a two out rally with Baylee Brewer at the plate, and that’s exactly what they get. A dropped third strike and a bad throw to first base result in a triple for Brewer.  Kylee Haney comes to the plate and on a wild pitch,  Brewer is sent home from third and scores. The game is tied, 3-3. Haney walks and the go ahead run is now on base. Stephanie Bates is up to bat and was walked. Natalie Bartlow gets on base with a dropped third strike by the catcher.  Kylee Haney is sent home on a wild pitch for the go ahead run.  Lightening begins to fill the air and the game is called as there is a threat of severe storms and a possible tornado from Elkton, TN.

The Lady Devils earn their first win of the season on a wild ride. They are scheduled to play Tanner 2 on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 6pm at Tanner on Field 3.

Storm clouds had lingered in the sky all day, but the sun had come out and the games were on. The Lady Devils arrived at the Tanner fields and both teams were warmed up and ready to play. Just as the line-ups were given to both bookkeepers and the coaches looked around, it was discovered that there were no umpires from the local association to be found. After phone calls were made, sure enough, the game was on the schedule for both teams, but not on the master schedule for umpires. Go figure that one out? Both teams agreed that since we were there, why not play a practice game. The girls were just about to take the field for the 1st batter when a storm rolls in from the Southwest and lightening began to pop. For the safety of all involved play was halted until another day.

The Lady Devils are scheduled to host play to the Elkmont 2 team on Friday, April 6, 2012 at 7:30pm at Elkmont Park, Field 2.

Friday, April 6, 2012
The crisp night air felt more like football weather than softball in comparison to the weekend before. The chants from the dugouts are the same, no cross town rivals here tonight, it’s classmate against classmate, Elkmont I vs. Elkmont II – the only difference in the uniform is the stinger panel on both legs for the Elkmont I team and the Elkmont II team has zebra print socks. The full moon held many tricks this night.

Bailey Vining is on the mound again for Elkmont I.  Top of the first inning began with  2 quick outs, # 7 Emma and # 9 McKenzie, both pop ups back to Vining.  The next batter #8 Kaylee walk and then #2 Skylar hits a single. The next batter #44 Abby hits down third baseline and throwing errors gives Abby a double and scores two runs. The top of the inning ends with the next batter #12 Hannah grounding out to Wales for out #3.

Pitching for Elkmont II is #11 Kalei. Bailey Vining, leading off for the Lady Devils, hit to the shortstop for a single, and on throwing errors came around and scores. Rachel Smith, lays down the perfect bunt and again with throwing errors she steals around and is waiting on third base when the next batter is up. Anna Grace Wales comes to the plate and drives one down the third baseline, Rachel is unable to dodge the ball and is called out for interference, resulting in the first out. Natalie Butler, hits but is unable to make the slide and is tagged out at second base. Wales advances to third. Baylee Brewer comes up to bat and hits a double to center field which scores Wales. Kylee Haney comes up to bat, hits a ground ball to left/center and results in a double, scoring Brewer. Stephanie Bates then hits down the third baseline for a double, scoring Haney. Natalie Bartlow strikes out for the third out of the inning but not before the Lady Devils put four runs on the board to lead, 4-2.

The second inning was quiet for both teams offensively.  Vining has a great inning on the mound striking out the next 3 batters. For the Lady Devils in the bottom of second inning,  the lead off batter Makayla Flanagan walks and makes it to third base; Grace DeVine walked and was waiting on second base when Taleour Walts ground out to shortstop for the first out.  Vining pops up to the pitcher for another out and Smith pops up to second base to finish the inning. The score was still Elkmont I leading, 4-2.

In the third inning, Vining threw it to Wales for the 1-3 out to send the first batter to the dugout.   Vining struck out the next batter. #7 Emma would get on base, but would be stranded as the next batter strikes out.

In the bottom of the third, the Lady Devils scored two runs and left two runners on base.  Scoring for the Lady Devils were Butler and Brewer. Butler hit and is safe on first base on a throw away by the shortstop and  Brewer  walks. Haney gets a hit in the third inning, scoring two but is tagged out at home plate on a close call. Left on base were Bates, Flanagan and DeVine. The score after 3 innings, Elkmont I, Lady Devils leading 6-2.

In the fourth inning, #8 Kaylee, hits to the shortstop and with errors she steals around and scores.  The next batter flies out to Wales and a strike out pitch from Vining quickly gives the Lady Devils two outs. The next batter, # 12 Hannah, gets on base with an error. Vining closes out of the inning by striking out  the next batter, leaving #12 Hannah on base.

The bottom of the fourth inning is the biggest inning of the night for the Elkmont I, Lady Devils. They score 7 runs which is the run limit for their age group.  Scoring for the Lady Devils are Vining, Smith, Wales, Butler, Brewer, Haney and Bates. Bartlow is left on base. The score at the end of four innings, Elkmont I, Lady Devils leading,  13-3.

The fifth and final inning:
Vining walks #10 Sara and walks #11 Kalei, both steal around and score.  The next 2 batters  strike out. #7 Emma hits and with errors is given a double, but is left on third base.  #9 McKenzie walks but  #Kaylee hits back to Vining who throws to Wales for the third out of the inning.

In the last at bat for the Lady Devils, Flanagan has a great bunt and scores; Walts walks and scores; Smith scores.   The final score is Elkmont I, Lady Devils 16,  Elkmont II 5.

The Lady Devils are scheduled to travel to West Limestone to play on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 11:00 am, against. West I.
