CLAY WOODS WOWS WITH TURKEYS

Congratulations Clay! 1st place chicken que! Nationals Bound in November!

This November, Clay Woods, a 10th grade student from Elkmont High School, will get to demonstrate his turkey barbecuing prowess at the National Poultry and Egg Convention's Turkey Que contest in Louisville, Kentucky. Limestone County has sent students to compete in this prestigious competition the last three years. During the competition, the aspiring chef will be tested on food safety skills, presentation and his knowledge of the protein he is cooking.

Woods became active in 4-H after his family consumer science teacher Sommer Horton became a sponsor. Before then, this high school didn't have a 4-H Club.“This is a big deal for this young man,” County Extension Coordinator Christopher Becker said. “And it all came about because someone chose to invest their time and energy in youth.”  The organization is community-funded and volunteer-driven. They are always looking for leaders in the community like Horton to volunteer their time and expertise to the club.

MORE INFORMATION
At over 100 years old, the 4-H program in Limestone County continues to bring mind-stretching, physically-challenging activities to a new generation of 9-18 year olds. This ever-evolving program reaches over 1200 kids through its in-school outreach led by County 4-H Agent Lisa Towe and Regional Extension Agent Chloe Wilson.

Every month the two women travel from school to school, bringing 4-H activities into the classrooms of 5th and 6th grade students. This month, they challenged students to an extreme birdhouse build-off. The winners will go on to compete in the County Round-Up in March.

“We want to reinforce valuable life lessons when we engage school kids—things like teamwork, a sense of belonging and leadership skills,” said County Extension Coordinator Christopher Becker. “Not everyone can be the star quarterback, but everyone can be in 4-H.”

The club is also open to homeschool students. Their group meets the first Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. at the Sheriff's Rodeo Arena.
