PREVIEW OF ARDMORE VS ELKMONT GAME

Ardmore:
Look for:
Offense - Running the football out of the"Stack I" formation.  They will line up with multiple backs in the backfield. Tyler McCarley (running back) is expected to be the go to guy this year.

Defense - A 4-3 defense that is meant to stop the run; some of the most experienced players on the team are on the defensive line. Focused on the running game; may be weak against the pass.

Underclassman - only nine upperclassman; the younger players will have to grow up fast

Lots of emotion; this game is always a barn burner; emotions run hot.  Look for some intensity .

News  Courier Prediction -  Elkmont at Ardmore

7 p.m., Cooper Field

Preview: Elkmont coach Sean Holt and Ardmore coach Shannon Brown both admitted their teams needed work after jamboree losses last week. The game could come down to which team has improved the most and makes the least amount of mistakes.
What to look for: Turnovers. Elkmont turned the ball over six times against East Lawrence, while Ardmore fumbled three times against Westminster last week.
Players to watch: Ardmore running back Tyler McCarley; Elkmont linebacker Jared Bailey
Last year’s result: Elkmont won 41-7
Series history: Ardmore leads 39-23
News Courier prediction: Elkmont 27, Ardmore 18

Ardmore Quote:

"Our opener against Elkmont is always a big rivalry.  It's a standing room only crowd; that's a great way to start out the season.  Whether you are playing at Elkmont or here it's an absolute wonderful environment to be a part of."
"They’ve had our number the last few years, so we’re going to have to play better.”

The Elkmont High School Cross Country program started six years ago with a Elkmont student's, Austin Miller, request to create a team so he could participate in school meets.  Barry Pugh and his asst. coach, Dale Miller, were willing to take on the challenge of building a program  from scratch.  They started with just four runners that first year but the program has grown into a recognized presence on the Alabama 3A high school cross country circuit.  The Red Devils field four teams and twenty-three runners this year.
Coach Pugh believes that the Elkmont Red Devil Cross Country summer camp that takes place at David Crockett State Park has been part of the reason for that growth.  Each year eight boys and eight girls participate in team building activities as well as three runs a day for a week in their efforts to get ready for the upcoming fall season.  The time spent together creates friendship, a running family who enjoy being with each other and not just runners on a school team.

The Elkmont CC program made a splash last year as the Varsity boys team took first place in the Limestone County Meet and the Varsity girls came in second.  Both teams took third at state sectionals and qualified for the state championship meet.

The Elkmont CC boys varsity team is anchored by four juniors who have the goal of bringing a state championship to Elkmont before they graduate.  The seniors running this year are Matthew Clem and Hayden Hudson.  The Red Devils has two runners in the 3A Cross Country state rankings:

#7   - Tyler Helms
#11 - Adam McMahan

They are joined by Chance Bailey; last year's  top ranked seventh grader.

The lone senior on this year's ladies team is Chole Hollingsworth.

The Hill Spirit has recruited a Cross Country reporter to coverage the teams' meets.  Check back throughout the season to follow the running Devils.

ARE YOU SIGNED UP TO VOTE THIS NOVEMBER?

Republican Convention starts this week; lots of interesting speakers.  Conventions are like a pep rally; can be motivational or really boring.  Please pay attention and make the effort to learn about the differences between the two choices this November.   People forget one of the main reasons  this election is important and that is the judicial branch. It does matter what philosophies are sitting on the bench.

1. Justice Scalia just turned 78
2. Justice Kennedy will turn 78 later this year
3. Justice Breyer will be 76 in August
4. Justice Ginsburg turned 81 and is reportedly quite ill.
5. Justice Stephens has already said he would retire and is just waiting for Obama to be reelected.

This election is about much more than the Heathcare mess, the economy and ever growing government.
The next president could appoint as many as 5 new Justices over the next four years.

Whomever we elect as president in November is almost certainly going to choose hundreds of other life-tenured federal judges, all of whom will be making momentous decisions about our lives for decades to come.”

You may not have a perfect candidate but you do have a clear choice this November.  You just have to choose what you want.
