NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH - DAY 28

The Limestone County Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster will host an emergency preparedness event this month to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies.

The event, called Be Ready Athens-Limestone County, will include discussion of the role local responders play in preventing and responding to disasters, equipment demonstrations and a free lunch.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Limestone County Event Center on Pryor Street.

The Limestone County Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster or LCVOAD is a humanitarian organization comprised of independent organizations that respond to disasters.

Its purpose is to streamline the delivery of services to people affected by disasters such as floods and tornadoes while eliminating unnecessary duplication of relief efforts.

Rep. Mo Brooks voted YES Identify Assets of Top Iranians - Vote Passed (282-143, 6 Not Voting) The bill requires the Treasury secretary to compile and submit to Congress a report detailing the known assets of Iran's top political and military leaders, how those assets were acquired and for what purposes the assets were used. The measure is expected to be the vehicle for the continuing resolution that would deal with broader veterans funding and emergency money needed to fight the spread of the Zika virus. Veto Override of Lawsuits by U.S. Victims of International Terrorism - S2040 The measure would permit possible lawsuits by U.S. victims of international terrorism against foreign nationals, which could allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue certain Saudi citizens, including members of the royal family. The bill was vetoed by President Barack Obama on September 23, 2016. Water Resources Development - HR5303 The bill would authorize 27 new water projects for construction by the Army Corps of Engineers and would authorizes the corps to conduct feasibility studies for 29 possible projects. It also would deauthorize five existing projects and would establish an expedited process for the deauthorization of other projects that are no longer viable, and it would modify the water project selection process created by the 2014 authorization law and other elements of that law in order to clarify and strengthen its application and use. I would like to invite all friends and family of Elkmont High School to come out this evening at 6:00 PM as we begin our Homecoming Festivities with a parade through downtown. Afterwards join us at Boss Hill Stadium for a Community Pep Rally. Come out and support our Red Devils!!!!

The route is from the Pig to the High School.  Roads will be blocked off along that route so be sure to detour around downtown Elkmont after 5:30 pm until 6:30 pm.  A great place to watch the parade is around the Downtown Church of Christ and City Hall.  The weather should be beautiful with 76 degrees for a high.

GENEVA DEE NELSON - OBITUARY

Geneva Dee Nelson, age 74 of Elkmont, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016 at her residence. Mrs. Nelson was born January 24, 1942 in Morgan County, AL to D.C. Smith and Catherine Callahan Smith.

Services will be Tuesday, September 27, 2016 12:00 p.m., at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home with David Nelson and Randy Johnson officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Preceded in death by her parents, D.C. and Catherine Smith; one brother, Josh Mayo Smith.

Survived by her husband, Morris Nelson; one son, Ricky Nelson and wife, Judy; two grandchildren, Brandy Lovell and husband, Nick and Bruce Nelson and wife, Melissa; four great-grandchildren, Garrett Lovell, Gentry Lovell, Ivey Nelson and Brynn Nelson; one sister, Debra Gilliland and husband, L.C.

Conlei Eloise Johnson had her second birthday yesterday.  She is the daughter of Mike and Carrie Johnson, of Trinity. Grandparents are Harry and Connie Knop, of Trinity, and Jerry and Gail Torres, of Elkmont, and Mike and Laura Johnson, of Trinity.

CURTIS CHARLES LASATER - OBITUARY

Curtis Charles Lasater 70, of Elkmont, died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at his home.
He was born Thursday, April 25, 1946 in Fayetteville, TN, he was the son of Charles Alvin Lasater and Hazel Marie Clardy Lasater. He lived in Ardmore area most all his life, he enjoyed quilting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce Ann Clark,
 
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Lasater, of Elkmont, Son, Charles Lasater, of TX, Daughters, Tammy Gregory,of Gillette, WY, Tina Marie Smith,of FL, Melinda Sims, of Elkmont, 10 grandchildren, Madison Barnes, Nicole Brown, Kenneth Gregory, Chelsea Gregory, Mikey Miactich, Donnie Smith, Yancy Sims, Matthew Sims, Elizabeth Sims and Emily Sims, 2 nephews, Ricky and Allen Clark, and one great niece Samantha Clark.
 
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
 
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, Ardmore, AL, at 11:00 AM with Dr. Joel Carwile officiating. Burial will be in Blanche Cemetery, Blanche, TN.

BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT

Being the Elkmont Cross Country Coach lets me spend quality time with our Elkmont young men and women. Can't say enough about the drive and the effort these kids give me day in and day out. 



I love them for what they do for me and I love the way they treat and encourage one another. If you are a coach and you you feel you have to yell and scream profanity at your kids... stop. There is no motivation more successful than a team coming together and loving each other and their sport. I have witnessed it first hand. 

One of my kids asked if we could pray before we left for students at our school who lost their mother. We did. They put their arms around each other, circled up and petitioned their Maker to be with them and help their fellow students and friends. 

They teach this old coach a lot through their actions! Motivate them through team building, love, and good old fashioned hard work. The reward is great and success will come! Have a good one!

Another win for Elkmont 10U girls!!  We played Lindsey Lane Christian Academy and won in straight sets;  1st match 25-10, 2nd match 25-16. 

Our players: Karlie Liverett, Storey Daniel, Makayla Kennedy, Brianna Newton, Lexie McNatt, Brilee Boger, Carly White, Meghan Payne.

The Little Divas won again!!! I can't say enough about these girls and what an awesome season we are having. We missed Carly & Lindsay Smith White today!
