As the first week of October comes around, it makes us think of beautiful leaves and wonderful weather. Did you know it is also fire prevention week? This allows the local fire departments to go to their local schools to teach about fires. This year the Elkmont Fire Department was asked to come visit the Elkmont Elementary kindergarden, first grade and pre-k classes to talk about house fires and what children should do.
After talking with each group, the students were able to sit in the fire truck jump seats. The fire department gave red fire hats and goody bags (pencils, stickers, arm bands, etc) to each child.
This year three of our volunteer fire department members were on hand to help. One was willing to be the fashion model showing what a fire fighter looks like in full gear. The complete outfit can be frightening if a child hasn't seen it before. In an emergency, it is important that children recognize the suit as a sign that someone is there to help them.
Its always fun to go and be part of this because you always get asked different things and you will hear all kinds of things. Thanks to all the teachers that are doing a great job!!
