CANDLES CAN BE DANGEROUS

The Elkmont Volunteer Fire Department was called to a mobile home on Thursday. “We couldn’t even see the smoke showing until we pulled into the driveway,” said department president Robby Newport. “If we’d have gotten there 2 or 3 minutes later, it would have been fully involved (in flames).  We kept the fire contained to mainly one area in the back bedroom, and once the firefighters got in there they pretty much got it out.”

As is often the case, a burning candle had been forgotten and started a fire causing heavy smoke damage. Hill Spirit makes it a practice never to burn candles in rooms that aren't in main traffic areas for this reason.

Owens Volunteer Fire Department served as backup, Piney Chapel came to assist and West Limestone firefighters were called to the scene because their department has water tankers. Special thanks to the people who thought to bring bottled water to our volunteers on a very hot day.
