What
a great day for a race! The Elkmont High School Cross Country and Track
teams hosted Elkmont’s very first Trackless Train Trek ½ Marathon on Saturday
morning. This race has been a long time in the making and was a huge
success for the first year!
A
few stats:
*We had
participants from 9 states (Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Mississippi,
North Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado and California)
*Youngest participant was 8 year
old Grattan O’neill from Huntsville and he finished 12 overall with a
remarkable time of 1:38:22. This set the world record in his age group; he also holds a total of 17 State Records and 6 World Records!
*Oldest participant was 70 year
old Tommy Stine from Corinth, Mississippi
*176 people registered and 165
finished
*1 unregistered dog –
Ludivane – ran the entire 13.1 miles and finished 7th overall with a time of 1:32. Coach Pugh said of Ludivane, "She received her finishers medal but we didn't know how to classify her age (dog years or human years) so she was excluded from age group awards.”

First,
we want to personally want to thank the many volunteers, sponsors and
supporters of this race. From the student athletes, their parents and coaches
to the Town Council of Elkmont, Limestone County Sheriff’s Department, Elkmont
Volunteer Fire Department, residents of Elkmont, Pettusville and Veto, as well
as all the other individuals and groups that reached out and offered to lend a
hand, THANK YOU! We truly appreciate everything that was done to ensure a
great race. Something like this just cannot be done without all of the
volunteers.
Another big THANK YOU to all of the runners! We didn’t know what to expect in terms of registration with this being the first year for this half marathon. Although we had several register on Friday and Saturday, for many runners, 13.1 miles is not a distance that they just “decide to run” the night before and show up on race day to sign up. As typical with races, we had some people register who were not able to run due to various reasons. With all that being said, we did end up with 165 finishers out of 176 registrations.
The
work continued long after the last runner crossed the finish line and the many
volunteers called it a day! Unfortunately, the timing/results system didn’t work
as planned and the results had to be compiled manually. After checking and
double checking things before posting, there were still a couple of corrections
to be made. The overall results are posted and without waiting for tech
support, the age group results were pulled together manually with a
spreadsheet. The link where they are posted is below.
Upon
discovery of the timing/results issue – at 8:00 am when the runners started –
it was quickly decided that we WILL have chip timing next year!
We hope to see this race grow in the upcoming years. The proceeds of this race will go directly to the Cross Country and Track teams at Elkmont High School and will be used to purchase equipment (hurdles, starting blocks, shot put, discus, etc.) and offset entry fees for these student athletes to compete.
