BUY YOUR PUMPKIN FROM THE DALYS

In Elkmont, Collin Daly was harvesting pumpkins of about six different colors. Some people want to use them for centerpieces at the dining table or for outside decorations, It’s more fun to have more color options when decorating the them for centerpieces at the dining table or might use them outside.

For Daly and his family, it is their first season growing pink pumpkins, as they grow mainly beans as part-time farmers, he said. Daly said pink and blue pumpkins take about an extra 10 to 15 days to mature.

The growing popularity of colored pumpkins is helping more than the farmers’ bottom lines. Daly said he will donate at least dollar for each pink
pumpkin he sells to breast cancer awareness. "I plan on giving maybe $2 or $3 per pumpkin. Plus, I will be giving some extra money to St. Jude’s Hospital for their work. Cancer affects everyone’s life.” Colin participates in the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation. It is a 501(c)(3) charity established to collect 25 cents per Porcelain Doll Pink Pumpkin sold and to distribute those funds to cancer research programs, according to its website.

Daly, a 1995 graduate of Elkmont High who works with Limestone County, also said the pink pumpkins are in demand and selling for about $5 each. He said the pink ones are usually “squattier, off-textured and odd-sized. The jack-o’-lantern pumpkins are kind of going away,” he said. “It seems now, the uglier the pumpkin, the more popular it is.”
