Samuel A. Mitchell, Jr., age 80, of Athens, Alabama, passed away on 26 June 2014 at The Limestone Health Facility in Athens, Alabama.
Sam was born 3 August 1933 at Athens, Limestone, Alabama, the fourth child of Samuel Alexander Mitchell and A.Z. Locke. His childhood, youth and young adult life were filled with work, some of which was fraught with hazards of which he said he had been fortunate to have survived.
Though both of his parents were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Sam joined the church on 24 July 1952, just 10 days short of his nineteenth birthday.
22 January 1960, Sam married Valeria Lodeska Moore Mitchell in the Salt Lake Temple. To their union were born four children, Kari, Shelley, Rodric and Xan. Sam is preceded in death by his wife Valeria Lodeska Moore Mitchell.
There are four surviving children and their spouses: Kari Maleah Mitchell Millward and Fredrick L. Millward (of Elkmont, Alabama), Shelley Teress Mitchell Merrill and Ricky L. Merrill (of Athens, Alabama), Rodric Hampton Mitchell and Shauna Turley Mitchell (of Orange Park, Florida), and Michelle Xan Mitchell Kucejko and Richard S. Kucejko (of Athens, Alabama).
There are eight surviving grandchildren and spouses: Thomas Sullivan Merrill and Tianna Lynn Higley (of Buena Vista, Virginia), Shazlan Alexandria Mitchell Moreno and Jose Armando Moreno (of North Jacksonville, Florida), Samuel Walter Kucejko (of Athens, Alabama), Jared Shane Merrill (of Athens, Alabama), Chelsea Elizabeth Kucejko (of Athens, Alabama), Heidi Linette Mitchell (of Orange Park, Florida), Katelyn Maleah Kucejko (of Athens, Alabama), and Andrew Hampton Mitchell (of Orange Park, Florida).
There are three surviving great-grandchildren: Trenton Jose Moreno (of North Jacksonville, Florida), Sharli-Anne Lizeth Moreno (of North Jacksonville, Florida), and Nathan Sullivan Merrill (of Buena Vista, Virginia).
Sam is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, family members and close family friends.
Funeral arrangements will be conducted by Spry Funeral Home of Athens, Alabama, with visitation held at Spry Funeral Home on Monday from 6pm to 8pm.
The funeral services will be held 10 AM on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 1716 West Market Street in Athens, Alabama, with Bishop Ryan A. Black officiating. Interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery, Athens, Alabama.
