RUNNING DEVILS SMOKIN' AT THE HANCEVILLE INVITATIONAL

COACH PUGH'S CORNER:
Great day at the Hanceville Invitational! Girls did a great job! Claudia Allen and Melanie Hernandez finish in the top 10 and receive t-shirts. Chase Prater wins the boys race and the boys finish 2nd. On another note college scouts were there and told me and some more standing around they came to see Elkmont.

I don’t say that to brag. I say it to let all know that the hard work these kids do is being noticed. Yeah cross country doesn’t get the gates or the crowds and it’s not the focus of pep rallies, but it can and is paying for some of these kids college tuition. I am very proud of the hard work they they’ve put into this season and the ones that have gone before them. Proud to see them recognized!

We at the EFD appreciate the support from both of these men as we serve our friends, families and community.

    ELKMONT'S COLEMAN COOK LOVES ENGINEERING

The Athens News Courier has an article about one of our Elkmont young folk.  You can click on this LINK to read the whole article or you have until Wednesday to pick up a hard copy at the Athens office.

    Article Highlights:
Coleman Cook knew from a young age that he wanted to be an engineer. In a single evening, he could put together an elaborate Lego set only to tear it down the next day and build his own creation. His favorites were roller coasters and robots. As he grew older, he joined the robotics program at Elkmont, which required him to go to the Limestone County Career Technical Center several times per week.

“Through robotics, I got interested in concept engineering, and the pre-engineering program at the tech center seemed like a natural way to explore the field,” Cook said.

Coleman is one of only six high school students in the world to pass the Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer exam. CLAD is an industrial-level certification for the LabVIEW programming language. College engineering students often take the CLAD test if they plan on going into industrial testing or production industries.

His LabVIEW credentials landed Cook an internship at Electrifier Corp., an automotive supplier in Elkmont where he was able to convert work hours into pre-engineering credits at LCCTC. “I was the first intern to use LabVIEW to work on programming some of the machines there and did some wiring,” he said. “My time there helped me understand industrial systems tremendously and I think it gave me an major edge.”

His plan is to earn his bachelor's in four years , a rarity for engineering majors and then complete his master's degree in one year using the Joint Undergraduate Master's Program at UAH. Cook hopes to work for an upper-level company doing research and computer programming once he completes his master's degree.

BUY YOUR PUMPKIN FROM THE DALYS

In Elkmont, Collin Daly was harvesting pumpkins of about six different colors. Some people want to use them for centerpieces at the dining table or for outside decorations, It’s more fun to have more color options when decorating the them for centerpieces at the dining table or might use them outside.

For Daly and his family, it is their first season growing pink pumpkins, as they grow mainly beans as part-time farmers, he said. Daly said pink and blue pumpkins take about an extra 10 to 15 days to mature.

The growing popularity of colored pumpkins is helping more than the farmers’ bottom lines. Daly said he will donate at least dollar for each pink
pumpkin he sells to breast cancer awareness. "I plan on giving maybe $2 or $3 per pumpkin. Plus, I will be giving some extra money to St. Jude’s Hospital for their work. Cancer affects everyone’s life.” Colin participates in the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation. It is a 501(c)(3) charity established to collect 25 cents per Porcelain Doll Pink Pumpkin sold and to distribute those funds to cancer research programs, according to its website.

Daly, a 1995 graduate of Elkmont High who works with Limestone County, also said the pink pumpkins are in demand and selling for about $5 each. He said the pink ones are usually “squattier, off-textured and odd-sized. The jack-o’-lantern pumpkins are kind of going away,” he said. “It seems now, the uglier the pumpkin, the more popular it is.”

The Dalys are located at Ft. Hampton Road, Elkmont  (toward the rocket).  They have mums for $12.  Pumpkins are $5 each or $20 for 5. You might even be able to buy bales of straw.

They inspire and encourage me more than they know ! Great kids, great parents, and great memories that will always bring a smile. Hard working kids who deserve all the best in life. Love them!
