JOHNNY NASH - OBITUARY

The funeral for Johnny Nash, 73, of Athens will be at 2 p.m. today at Spry Funeral Home with Pat Lawrence, Alton Downs and James Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Dement Cemetery.

Mr. Nash died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at Athens-Limestone Hospital.

He was born Jan. 16, 1938, in Limestone County to Jim Nash and Lila Goode Nash.

He was a long-time member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

Mr. Nash worked many years as an industrial sewing machine mechanic, traveling across the country as well as to Scotland, Jamaica and Canada to conduct repairs in garment factories in those locales. After a brief retirement, he began a second career in apartment maintenance and until just a few weeks before his death, he oversaw repairs for the residents of Montclair Apartments in Athens, many of whom had become very dear to him.

Mr. Nash was a devoted husband and loving father who doted on his two grandsons, Jonathon Clark and Nash Schrimsher. He was a true “cut-up” who never failed to have a lighthearted joke at the ready. With a twinkle in his eyes he was quick to deliver a dose of gentle ribbing to strangers and kin alike.

Mr. Nash was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lila Nash; two brothers, R.C. Nash and Bill Nash; and one sister, Ethel Motter.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ann Turner Nash; two daughters, Pamela Clark and husband Steve, and Tanjie Schrimsher and husband Brian, all of Athens; two grandsons, Jonathon Clark and Nash Schrimsher, both of Athens; two brothers, Orvil Nash of Killen and Tommy Nash of Athens; five sisters, Christine Biggs, Jewel Johnson and Ruth Butler, all of Athens, Geneva Pack of Elkmont, and Edna Downs of Decatur; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jonathon Clark, Brian Schrimsher, Micah Nash, Rickey Motter, Tim Turner and Eric Turner.

Honorary pallbearers are Nash Schrimsher, Steve Clark, Baba Turner, Matthew Nash and Don Turner.
