The graveside service for retired Air Force Lt. Col. John D. Poteete Jr., 78, of Elkmont will be at 1 p.m. today at Athens City Cemetery with George Stewart officiating.
A gathering for friends will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. today at McConnell Funeral Home.
Retired Lt. Col. Poteete passed on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at home. He was born June 24, 1933, in Detroit to John D. Poteete Sr. and Wilma Harlow Poteete. Retired Lt. Col. Poteete retired after 21 years of service and was a Vietnam veteran.
He earned a Ph.D. in higher education from Georgia State University. He was a longtime member at Elkmont United Methodist Church, and served as a member of the Elkmont City Council.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 54 years, Winnie Coffman Poteete; one son, Kent H. Poteete and wife Doreen of Atlanta; one daughter, Susan Delite Poteete Mills of Elkmont; one sister, JoAnne Poteete White and husband George of Huntsville; two grandchildren, Penelope Harlow Poteete, age 13, and John Andrew Poteete, age 9; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
