ELKMONT GOES ARTSY IN HUNTSVILLE

Huntsville Museum of Art’s newest exhibit will display work from some of the area’s youngest and most creative minds. Among the 200 pieces selected from the museum’s “YAM 2015: Exhibition for Youth Art Month” are creations by Decatur City, Athens City and Limestone County students. Using materials ranging from hot glue and markers to acrylic and clay, the artists depicted a spider web, princess, midnight sky and dreamer.

“This annual exhibit is an important reminder of the value of arts education for children and teenagers,” said Christopher Madkour, the museum’s executive director.

The museum will celebrate the opening of the 28th annual YAM exhibit with free admission from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Special events include a reception from 1:30-3:30 p.m., an awards presentation at 2 p.m.

Elkmont's Samantha Pressnell will be featured with "Untitled"

Elkmont sixth grader, Katie Bowling, also has a wonderful painting chosen for the exhibit. Hill Spirit really likes this one.

"Midnight Star Gaze"

Along with YAM, the museum will feature the Congressional Art Competition winners and the 17 Blue Ribbon finalists from the Visual Arts Achievement Program. After Sunday, the Blue Ribbon pieces will hang in the artist’s gallery at Montgomery’s Alabama State Council of the Arts.  Alli Griffis of Elkmont High, will have her work displayed in Montgomery.

"A River Runs Through It"
The exhibit also spotlights the work of local art teachers.  Elkmont High’s Rhonda Hall has some of her fantastic jewelry on display.  Hill Spirit has always admired her work.
