LINDA SCHMIDT - TOOLS FOR TEACHERS AWARD

This week’s Tools for Teachers award winner is Linda Schmidt, a math teacher at Elkmont High School known for her creativity and relentless pursuit of understanding.

Whether it’s a food metaphor relating hot dogs and hamburgers to geometry or letting kids explain concepts to each other, Ms. Schmidt  leaves no method untried when it comes to a student’s understanding.

This recognition comes with $319 to spend as she sees fit in her classroom, but the cash is just a tangible form of something far more important: a student’s appreciation.  We received her nomination from Elkmont 11th grader Spencer Ready.  He is in Ms. Schmidt’s algebra class and wanted to say thanks to his teacher for the creative ways she makes math a little clearer.

For Ms. Schmidt that is everything. Because helping students accomplish what they assume to be impossible is not just her job, it’s what she was born to do .

“I think I felt as a young child that this was just my calling.” Schmidt said. “I like helping people learn things that they feel like they can’t learn.”
