SHERIFF'S RACE - WHO HAS THE MOST MONEY?

Limestone Sheriff Mike Blakely is outpacing other sheriff candidates in contributions for the 2014 election.

Blakely, the incumbent sheriff, is running unopposed in the June 3 Democratic primary election. His three Republican challengers will face off in the June 3 Republican primary with the winner facing Blakely in the Nov. 2 general election. His balance at the end of February, the most recent reporting date, shows he has $44,587. His spending included the usual car magnets and other promotional items plus a $2,879 fee to the Limestone County Democratic Executive Committee. Candidates typically pay a qualifying fee to the party, based on a percentage of the sheriff salary.

The three other candidates in the race, all Republicans, have nowhere near the war chest Blakely has amassed. All of the candidates are spending their money on ads, yard signs, displays for public events and other campaign expenses.

Eric Smith
Candidate Eric Smith, an Alabama state trooper who lives in Athens, has raised the most of the remaining three candidates at $7,189. He began the campaign year with a balance of $1,839 raised in 2013, which included a $1,000 loan from himself in April 2013. He raised $4,307 in cash and in-kind contributions in January 2014 followed by $1,043 in cash and in-kind contributions in February.

Brad Pullum
Candidate Brad Pullum, a former deputy-turned-real estate appraiser, reported $7, 280 in non-itemized cash contributions on his February report. He paid a $2,878 filing fee to the Limestone County Republican Executive Committee. He ended the month with a balance of $4,183.

Eric Redd
Candidate Eric Redd of Elkmont, who joined the Army the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, has raised $3,000 with one donor. Records show Redd received the donation from Wade Redd of Madison. Redd ended February with a $2,795 balance in his campaign fund after buying items needed for an appearance at the Hospice of Limestone County Chili Challenge.
