BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT
In the car yesterday I heard Brad Paisley's song Last Time for
Everything. Upbeat great song in my opinion that holds on to a great
message. Eventually there is a "last time" for everything in our lives.
Most of the time (and probably a good thing) we don't even realize it.
After I heard it I took a little inventory of "last times" in my own life. Of course graduations, athletic events, simple and huge milestones in my life.
Then I stopped to think about just when was the last time I really helped someone out. When was the last time I put some thought in how I treat people. When was the last time I sat back and thanked God for this life I live and the ones I love. This song is right....last time for everything.
Making those"last times" daily can make a difference. Play on words, but food for thought. Too much thinking time in the summer? Maybe...just maybe..... Have a good one!

"Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world"
I was reading an article on education earlier and ran across this quote. I remember so well being in the third grade and Mrs. Betty Roberts reading the book "Sounder" aloud to us on library days. That book and the way she made those characters come alive started my love for reading.
Reading a book for enjoyment became a great thing in my life and I enjoy it to this day. I also remember Mrs. Randi Harbin reading "The Outsiders" to us in 9th grade English. I couldn't wait until she started and I became lost in the book when she would read. Mrs. Dianna Jackson and Mrs. Carol Field would have us write stories in reading and social studies and Mrs Martha R. Eubanks would have us write essays daily in senior English. It developed in me a love for writing and changed "my" world.
These teachers and others stand out in my mind and have brought a lot to my life. Taking the time to read aloud to a child and having them write their thoughts and feelings can make a big difference. Thanks to all who did if for me! Have a good one!

BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT
Pretty good night for porch sitting. The wind feels great. Ran 6 this morning in the rain with friends. We laughed because even the squirrels we saw In the village looked at us like we were crazy. Truth is the warm rain and wind felt pretty refreshing.
Sitting here tonight with the sounds of the bugs singing everything to sleep and the lightning bugs dancing in the air bring some calmness to the soul. Rustling tree leaves providing a back drop for thinking about friends and one of Jensen's good friends who is battling. In the constants of these peaceful nights it is easy to forget how quickly life will sometimes change and challenge.
The song "God will take care of you" runs through my mind. "Be not dismayed" starts the song. Well...I hate to admit it but sometimes I am. My human mind does wonder "why?" I am sure I am not the first nor will I be the last to let these thoughts cross my mind. But I know Who it is that does hold the answers. I know His ways are not mine and I know He understands. Mercy and grace are wonderful things! Keep sweet Anna in your thoughts and prayers. Have a good one!

BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT
This week I have added a daily walk to the running regimen. We live in a
beautiful place where God's handiwork can be seen all around.
Grandaddy used to say the "sun dog"
In the upper right hand corner of the picture meant three days of rain coming! From the weather reports he may be right! Been a bunch of places in my life but Elkmont Alabama is by far the favorite. Have a good one!

BARRY'S CORNER - LIVING IN ELKMONT
"What we think we become"
I saw this quote on a shirt the other day and I agree, but with a child a lot of time it is "what we are told we are is what we think and what we become"
Headed out for summer work outs in a few. Have 20 kids plus most mornings show. As a coach, my job is to use these volunteer workouts to build not only physical strength, but also self worth and self motivation in the fact that these are doing 4+ miles at 7 am, when some choose to stay in and do nothing. These days are to me as much about building up self esteem and team spirit as it is about getting stronger and faster. If we as coaches can't praise effort and focus on positives, I believe we are ineffective. Same goes for parents. Building up young minds and lives is important. They are going to believe what they are told. First I believe we all need to set the example. Expectations are so much easier to achieve when modeled by our coaches and parents. Just my take! Have a good one!

COME RUN WITH US
The Elkmont High School Cross Country
team is always a zany bunch. They run to the left, they run to the
right, they run up and they run down. If there is a mud puddle, they will run through it, instead of around it.
The tryouts are in the books! New teams picked and posted. The teams are looking great! I am blessed with a lot of hard working kids! Looking forward to a great summer workout and camp!
We will be at the trail in Elkmont on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7am and at the track in Athens (meeting at Rec center) on Tuesday and Thursday's at 6pm. We would like to have anyone who wants to start moving and getting in shape to join. You do not have to be a runner to participate. You can walk, jog, or run. It just easier when you have someone with you! You can go any distance you like. My athletes would enjoy the encouragement and it will get you up and moving. Come on out!

DECATUR DAILY ALL AREA SOCCER TEAM
The Decatur Daily has released its all area team for 2017 today. Daniel Valencia was recognized for an outstanding season by any standards by a spot on the first team. He's 42 goals were the second-highest total in the state this season and ranked No. 8 in the country. He led the Red Devils to the Limestone County Tournament championship and a spot in the state playoffs (only 16 teams got to go). Daniel should have been selected for the all state team. His season was that good.

COME RIDE WITH THE DALTON GANG
The Dalton Scott Memorial Trail Ride is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday on both the southern and northern ends of the Richard Martin Rails to Trails track in Elkmont. Riders will converge in downtown Elkmont for lunch, where there will be live music and a table auction.
Proceeds will be split among Huntsville-based For Life Ministries, Gaits to Heaven Ministries (serving the Lakota Tribe in South Dakota) and Good Shepherd Ministry (missions to Haiti). Non-riders are welcome to attend the event in downtown Elkmont.
A suggested minimum donation of $10 provides a ticket to ride and a hamburger/hot dog sack lunch, including water, during the ride. For more information, contact Adams at 256-653-0159 or send a message to daltonscottmtr@gmail.com.
Cowboyn' for the Son, the North Alabama/southern Tennessee chapter of the national Cowboys for Christ organization, believe they will see their friend Dalton Scott again in heaven, but in the meantime, the trails certainly aren't the same place without him.
The club, which brings people together through their mutual love of Jesus Christ and riding horses, is planning the inaugural Dalton Scott Memorial Trail Ride for this Saturday, to honor the life of a man one club member called “a real strong Christian.”
MYRTLE REBECCA (BECKY) WILBANKS - OBITUARY
This is such a short obituary for our sweet Becky who we all know from the "Pig". She and her husband Wain will be greatly missed. Hill Spirit always looked for her when shopping at the Elkmont Piggly Wiggly.
Myrtle Rebecca Wilbanks, 70, of Harvest, passed away Thursday.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wain Wilbanks; brother Charles Boswell; sister Jane Snipes and her son Larry Wilbanks.
Visitation will be Monday, June 12, 2017, from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Berryhill Funeral Home followed by service at 2:00 with Rev. Scott Wing officiating.
DID YOU MISS THE SMOKIN' RAILROAD?
After working for nearly a whole year, the Elkmont Lions Club have another Smokin' Railroad BBQ Cookoff in the books.
This year's BBQ event had 16 cooking teams from Tennessee and of course Alabama who came to test their skills. To decide on the winners, we had 35 KCBS ( Kansas City Barbeque Society) Judges and 2 wonderful KCBS Representatives (Sam and Janet Appleton).
These dedicated judges came from all parts of Alabama, from southern Tennessee and as far as Atlanta. They travel on their own dime, just for the enjoyment of tasting and judging good food. We appreciate their support and without them, the Smokin' Railroad wouldn't be possible.
On Friday night, we were honored to have some local entertainment ( NO rain). The streets were covered with people that came out to hear local talent do a little pickin' and singin'. Daniel Jones with his great voice started out the evening; followed by Garris/Cole and Company to close out the night. The streets were full of people that came to hear some good music and they were not disappointed.
THOUGHTS FROM THE LIONS CLUB:
Well, year eight is done and we couldn't have asked for better weather. We had a awesome group of cook teams and KCBS judges. Janet and Sam Appleton were our KCBS Reps for the Smokin Railroad Street BBQ Cookoff this year. Fantastic jobs by everyone and we loved working with you ALL.
The Elkmont Lions Club would like to thank the vendors for providing food, assorted drinks and sweets to the crowd. Daniel Jones and Lesley Garris and Band for giving us some great music Friday. And to the town of Elkmont, Mayor Tracy Compton and all the Councilmen, THANK YOU. Without you and the other great sponsors, we could not pull this event off each year. Thank you to each of our Elkmont Lions Club members and volunteers Jessica Newport and Beth Kimbrell Little.
We look forward to seeing you all next year. We hope you had a great time in Elkmont and if we can make improvements please let us know.
