4 STEPS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED

Emergency Planning 101
How to be prepared for anything

Step 1: Prepare your family
Make sure that you have a family plan in place so that you know exactly where you should meet, who you should notify, and what you will do in case of an emergency. Write down this plan and practice it with all family members including your little ones.

Step 2: Prepare your home
Make sure that you know how to turn off your utilities in case it is necessary in an emergency. Have food stored in different areas of your home. Have plans in place for what to do if you will be evacuating versus what to do if you will be sheltering in your home.
Step 3: Prepare to evacuate
Have an evacuation list ready so you know exactly what to grab should you need to leave your home in a hurry. Have 72 hours worth of food, water and clothing, as well as medical needs, hygiene needs, and tools packed up in an easy-to-grab kit. Have your emergency binder prepared with all of your important documents in one place.

Step 4: Prepare for other emergencies
While most people think of emergency preparedness for natural disaster situations, there are many other events we need to prepare for as well. Loss of a spouse, loss of a job, house fire, and burglary are just a few examples of things we can try to prepare for. Compiling your emergency binder will go a long way in helping prepare for any of these scenarios.
