TRAILBLAZERS AND FRIENDS RUN IN THE OAK BARREL

Oak Barrel Half Marathon – April 5, 2014
Lynchburg, TN

Several local runners were spotted in Lynchburg, TN this past Saturday!  They were participating in the Oak Barrel Half Marathon sponsored by The Jack Daniels Distillery.  These athletes had to commit to run this 13.1 mile “race” 6 months ago!  Registration for the Oak Barrel began in October and the 1400 initial entries filled up quickly – within a couple of weeks!  Many of these runners could be found hitting the trail in Elkmont together early on Saturday mornings in preparation for this ½ marathon.  Great finishes by all!

Jason Emerson - 1:52.24
Doug Williams - 1:53.45
Wayne Morrow - 1:59.24
Brad Wales - 2:02.04
Brenda Morrow - 2:03.57
Barry Pugh - 2:07.27
Heath Shores - 2:08.48
Kim Shores - 2:11.0
Pam Emerson - 2:15.34
Ginger Blackwell - 2:18.23
Terri Hill - 2:24.48
Jennie Barnett - 2:27.48
Stacy Cook - 2:31.44
Gretta Armstrong - 2:39.31

The Town of Lynchburg was very welcoming to the runners and spectators that came to cheer on their runners!  We all arrived around 6:45 am for the 8:00 am start and found parking to be fairly easy even though the park was filling up quickly.  The temperature was brisk – probably in the low 40’s when we started and not quite 50 by the time all were finished.  Perfect running conditions!

The 13.1 mile course wound through the country roads and featured a couple small hills and one really long hill that became quite steep at the end.  That hill is referred to as Whiskey Hill and the song Highway to Hell was blaring through the trees as we ran or walked up that hill!  All in all, the course is great and the race swag just cannot be beat!  Runners were treated to a long sleeve, ¾ zip tech shirt, hat, socks and a really cool finishers medal!  Plus all the food, water, Gatorade and chocolate milk you could want!  Runners could even have a bottle of Jack Daniels custom etched with the Oak Barrel logo, name, race time….or anything else you could want on it!  Pretty cool way to commemorate your achievement if you chose to do so!

Looking forward to next year’s Oak Barrel and having more Elkmont/Ardmore/Athens friends join us!  Rumor has it some of our 2014 Couch Potato crew may join in next year!
