Four years ago, the Elkmont Lions Club found out that the North Alabama Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Fundraiser Bike Ride was going through Elkmont. The people who staffed the rest station were from Birmingham. When the riders and support teams asked questions about our wonderful town, they had no clue how to answer them. Larry Pylant talked to one of the members of that early staff and she gave him a contact person and number to call. He called Jennifer Ely and asked what was needed for the Lions Club to host the Elkmont stop for next year's race. The answer was that if our Lions wanted the opportunity it was theirs.
Since then, the Elkmont Lions Club have staffed the Elkmont Rest Stop 3. This is the major turning point of the various races, the 45, 75 or 100 miles. On Friday our volunteers go and pick up supplies for the station and set up on Saturday morning. The riders have a varied selection of items energy foods, protein enriched foods, fruits and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We are known by the riders as the stop with the great whipped PB&J sandwiches. Of course water and Gatorade is a must for these riders.
We answer many questions about our growing town and many say they have been back since last year to visit or plan to later this year. Promoting our town is the main reason we decided to take on the event and help it to continue to grow. The ride is the first Saturday in June each year. As members of the
Elkmont Lions Club, we hope that you mark your calendar for next year and come out to support this great cause. The ride is a fund raiser for MS. The riders raise money for each mile they ride or get sponsors for them to ride.
