SMOKIN' RAILROAD TODAY

Area barbecue cooks and enthusiasts are invited to participate in the seventh annual Smokin’ Railroad Street Barbecue Cook-off this weekend.  Located in downtown Elkmont, it is part of the Alabama BBQ Trail.

The contest has an entry fee of $140, and the money helps raise funds for the Elkmont Lions Club. The club provides a number of community services, including purchasing eyeglasses and providing eye exams for students in the Elkmont community and providing two $1,500 scholarships to Elkmont High School students.

“We want to try to help the students who don’t always get the scholarship,” said Susan Pylant, who helps organize the annual event with her husband, Larry Pylant.

Cook-off festivities begin Friday with live
music and a meet-and-greet with all the cooks who will participate. The Elkmont Volunteer Fire Department will sell hamburgers and hot dogs as a fundraiser for the department.  When you stop by, be sure to bring one of your best recipes.  They are putting together a fundraiser cook book.

The cook-off officially begins Saturday, and taste-test tickets for the people’s choice award will go on sale at 10 a.m. Tickets to sample the barbecue cost $1 each. The Lion’s Club will also be selling barbecue plates.

Prizes will be awarded in three categories — ribs, chicken and pulled pork.  Awards will be announced at 3 p.m. The grand champion prize winner will receive $400, while the reserve champion will receive $250. Prizes will also be awarded in each of the three meat categories — first-place winners will receive $225, second-place winners will receive $175 and third-place winners will receive $150. The people’s choice winner will receive $100.

“We want to be able to bring people to Elkmont to let them see what we have to offer,” Pylant said. “We try to help better the community the best we can.”
