THE BEST COOKS LIVE IN LIMESTONE COUNTY

Christian Keller (Elkmont team member), Bradley Bright, Gannon Elmore, and Brandon Long thought their chances of scoring well, let alone placing, at this year's state FCCLA culinary arts competition were slim to none, but the Limestone County Career Tech team went in the kitchen, March 5 and came out with gold.

The Limestone County team won with a fantastic menu featuring steak. They were graded on preparation, technique, taste and presentation. The menu consisted of a salad course, steak, side dishes and of course, dessert. The students said they were shocked that their entry was chosen as the best. “It was pretty nerve-wracking,” said Keller, a junior at Elkmont High School. “Everyone had confidence in us except for ourselves,” Elmore, a West Limestone High School junior, said. “We just thought the odds were stacked against us,” Bright said. “We were all very nervous.”

When they sat down for the awards ceremony, students from the school sitting in front of them turned around and said they thought Limestone “destroyed” their plating — meaning they thought it was the best — and they were sure to win.

Long said he and his teammates thought differently, but were stunned to receive a trophy and medals for their first-place finish. Now, people they don't even know are complimenting them on their win and wishing them well on their way to the July nationals in San Diego.

“It's awesome to have our community and schools behind us,” Bright said.
