The Golfing Red Devils played in the Alabama State Sectionals, April 30, at the Cullman Municipal Course. The course was dry and fast; the weather warmer than many golfers were expecting. The teams participating were: Clements, Elkmont, Holly Pond, Madison Academy, New Hope, Randolph, Vinemont and West Morgan. As the players worked their way through the eighteen hole course, the very fast greens created chipping and putting problems as balls sped by the cup or rolled off the green. A lot of balls also were lost to water and the heavy overgrowth that surrounded the course.
At the end of the day, the teams finished and huddled around the club house as scores were posted to see if their team qualified. Elkmont knew they hadn't played well enough to take one of the top two spots but were hopeful that they would succeed in qualifying again this year for the Substate Playoffs. The team had posted a solid round with Hayden Huseth's 76 and Quinn Martin's 80 but would Daniel Logan's 97 and Colby Holt's 100 be able to combine for a good enough score to help them make the cut. Matt Newsom posted a 103 but only the top four scores are combined for the team score. Elkmont's was 353.
The first team's score that qualified was quickly posted as Randolph came in at 315. Holly Pond snagged second with 317. Then the field dropped by almost 20 points with West Morgan coming in at 334 for third. Would Elkmont be low enough to get that fourth spot at 353? The team scores continued to be posted and added: Clements 385, Vinemont 402, New Hope with 407 and Madison Academy's one and two player were disqualified due to tournament rules being broken, leaving their team short the number of needed scores. The Elkmont Red Devils had indeed made the Sub State team cut as well as pick up the fourth place lowest score by its number one player, Hayden Huseth.
Elkmont will be teeing off, Monday - May 7 at 11:30 am; Location Gunter's Landing in Guntersville, Alabama. Click HERE for course information.
Good luck Red Devils
